Nydas Okiro is a human sorcerer/bard who was the Guildmaster of the Golden Scythe in the city of Avalir. He is played by Lou Wilson.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Nydas was 5'10" and stocky. His eyes were hazel flecked with actual gold, and he had a long scar over his right eye and three X tattoos over his left eye. His beard ended with a golden ring, and he had shoulder-length dreadlocks cuffed with gold, over which he wore a floppy cap in the style of a Renaissance merchant. He wore a cape over a red coat with a golden pin with the signature of the Golden Scythe.[9]
Personality[]
Nydas was flamboyant, jovial, and theatrical.
Biography[]
Background[]
A former pirate, Nydas rose to the position of Guildmaster of the Golden Scythe guild and founded the Sorcerer's University in Avalir.[10]
Avalir travels the lands of Exandria, gathering ether (raw magic) to share with Domunas and Gau Drashari every seven years. The Drashari tithe of ether was 25% and the other 75% was supposed to be put into the ground for the Replenishment. That hadn't been happening for the past two or three Replenishments, and in the Replenishment which would have taken place on the first day of the Calamity, just less than 5% of the city's ether was actually planned to be going into the ground for Domunas. The rest was getting caught up by the Leywright or funneled out to archmages in the city for purposes such as unnaturally extending their lives. Nydas's part in this scheme was to make sure that the Leywright would continue its extra push, keeping this endeavor a secret.[11]
"Excelsior" (E3x01)[]
The morning of the eve of The Replenishment, Nydas was busy with the preparations for the celebrations, including dealing with Feromyne, a sphinx participating in the coming Parade of Beasts. Nydas then met with Badran Esparad, the captain of the Golden Scythe mercenaries, who asked him about overdue money the Golden Scythe owed to hired mercenaries. To his friend, Nydas admitted that the Golden Scythe was operating at a deficit at the moment, but assured him that all debts would be honored when the Replenishment was done. Moving to his office, Nydas found a spell kite containing a letter from his brother Eadalus in Cathmoíra promising him a family meal. Magister Milus Phren, a lower-level mage who owed debts to more senior mages, arrived saying he had heard rumors that there might be a surplus of Ether that Nydas had clandestine access to. Nydas assured him this was just a rumor.
At Patia's Replenishment party that evening, Nydas arrived with seven hundred hodmedods carrying a rare lapis lazuli Marquesian tree. He identified the piece of golden bow Cerrit found as being made of celestial gold, belonging to a solar. He also spoke to Patia about Milus Phren's visit and the apparent breach in their circle of trust. Nydas then returned to his headquarters at the Golden Scythe.
"Bitterness and Dread" (E3x02)[]
Nydas brought four experimental prototype automatons to Laerryn at her workroom in the Meridian Labyrinth, where they aided in the successful testing of her Astral Leywright and Ley-Rudder. Later, he accompanied Zerxus to the Hall of Prophecy and was shown a prophecy that had been given but declared to be false: "The stars are leaving us. Our hands cannot reach the limbs of the tree, can no longer scribe the name of our deliverance. We will soon be as broken as our promises. Avalir shall fall. All shall fall. And from our folly will the hands that forge the world banish themselves from the broken things they have made." Nydas reassured the sole remaining oracle that this prophecy was false.
"Blood and Shadow" (E3x03)[]
In the battle against Milus Phren and Lacrytia Hollow, Nydas cast Summon Draconic Spirit to call forth his protective spirit Sha'korzhan, the dragon that formerly guarded the hoard that formed the basis of the wealth of the Golden Scythe. Lacrytia summoned a giant bony hand that shoved Nydas off the dragon and they were both pulled 100 feet into the air by Laerryn's Reverse Gravity. Nydas was able to escape the crushing hand and have Sha'korzhan seize Lacrytia. He stabbed her repeatedly and pulled her out of the gravity well, still 50 feet in the air. Nydas then cast Detect Thoughts on one of the attacking mages, gaining a thread of memories that Patia downloaded after the battle into her Sphere of Power. From this, they were able to learn much about the plotting of the various minions of Asmodeus.
Nydas initially hid from the party the fact that he believed the oracles at the Hall of Prophecy were not indeed going mad and giving false prophecies, and only shared the truth in his attempt to stop Laerryn destroying the Tree of Names. In the ensuing intra-party battle, Nydas cast Hold Person on both Laerryn and Loquatius and when they broke free, grappled Laerryn, but she was able to cast Blight upon the tree, destroying it.
"Fire and Ruin" (E3x04)[]
The energy of the tree's destruction produced a shock wave that knocked Nydas and Loquatius unconscious and killed Patia. Asmodeus entered Exandria through the remnants of the tree, taking advantage of a Time Stop to interact with Zerxus. After the archdevil left for Ghor Dranas, the paladin regained control of his body with the assistance of a temporarily redeemed Vespin Chloras, used Revivify to revive Loquatius and Patia, and used his Lay on Hands to heal Nydas.
The Ring of Brass met again, and after going to the Hall of Prophecies to hear the oracle locked there, (who they now knew was not mad but predicting real dangers), they made a plan to use Laerryn's Astral Leywright to send the elementals sealed under Cathmoíra to another plane, thus preventing them from joining the Betrayer Gods which would doom all Exandria. Nydas decided that he needed to get more automatons from the Golden Scythe to protect the inhabitants of Avalir (since devils had taken the streets), and he summoned Sha'korzhan to travel faster, cutting off any attempt at protest by the deceased dragon in order to avoid wasting time. He took Quay with him to drop off at the Herald's Tome, telling the changeling to notify people to go to the galleons to evacuate the city.
When he arrived at the Guildhall intending to make the guild's skyships available to the people, he discovered that the Ring of Gold had requisitioned them. The former pirate openly rejected that decision, willing to put the safety of the citizens first, and Badran Esparad, a captain in his service, stabbed him in the back. However, Nydas withstood the blow, and with Sha'korzhan's help dispatched the traitor, after which he immediately sent one of the ships to rescue the children of the Sorcerer's University. He then attempted to send the taxmen to help deal with the devils, but was attacked by hidden K'nauthi, being saved by the sphinx Feromyne, who informed him that the followers of Asmodeus had manipulated four of the taxmen.
The Ring of Brass met again and prepared to put Laerryn's plan in motion with the Astral Leywright, but were followed by Vespin Chloras and various sabotaged taxmen and a battle ensued. The Last Dragon of Avalir fought bravely alongside his friends and was assisted in battle by his symbolic predecessor, Sha'korzhan, who was defeated by one of the taxman. Zerxus was knocked unconscious, and remembering that at sunrise mere moments away, he could turn on his friends against his will due to his contract with the Lord of Hells, Nydas offered him a way out. When Nydas was knocked unconscious, he made sure his sword hit the paladin, opening up the possibility that if he died before his contract went into effect, he could go to the afterlife instead of the Nine Hells. The Ring of Brass's plan worked but not without consequences: the process began to destroy the continent of Domunas. In his final moments Nydas received a Sending from his brother Eaedalus wondering if he made his way out, and Nydas assured him all would be well. The former pirate died with a vision of his younger self and his brother on the deck of a ship, and with the knowledge that his family and the children of the University survived the city's immolation as well, with a future and the potential to do great things.
Relationships[]
Eaedalus and Irmé[]
Eaedalus was the Alcald of Cathmoíra and therefore a person of influence there.[12]
Prior to the city's landing to rejoin its sister city of Cathmoíra, Nydas received a kite from his brother Eaedalus and sister-in-law Irmé containing letters catching him up on family business in the terrestrial city and also including a homemade nut and fruit loaf.[13] The note from his brother read: "Even dragons have to land. There'll be a table set for you when you get here, brother."[14]
