Lord Nostoc Greyspine is the head of the House Greyspine and proprietor of dozens of mines across Cliffkeep Mountains,[2] including the Greyspine Quarry, the main source of his wealth.[3] As an NPC, he was played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Nostoc has very short, fiery-red hair, and a long, straight beard kept very smooth.[4] Like the rest of the dwarves of Kraghammer, he speaks with an Irish accent.

Personality[]

Nostoc is a stern and uncharitable businessman, callous towards anything unprofitable to him and quick to anger at thievery.

Biography[]

Background[]

"Arrival at Kraghammer" (1x01)[]

At the Greyspine Industries mining facility, Nostoc agreed to meet with Vox Machina when they brought him a barrel of Balgus's thistle branch dark blood wine. After he sampled it, they inquired about a halfling compatriot, and Nostoc said she had stepped on several toes around the city due to her vision quest and descended into the mines. When they offered to retrieve her from the mines, he gave them permission to enter, but warned them against thievery and refused any further reward. He was very angry when he spotted Vax'ildan trying to siphon off some of the dwarven wine and the party's antics and excuses for it, angrily dismissing them from his office.

"Into the Greyspine Mines" (1x02)[]

After the party slew the naga-like monster that emerged from the mines, Nostoc invited them back to his office and gave the party a contract for twenty-five thousand gold pieces to find the source and leader of the monsters in the mines, and to eliminate them. He also promised an additional two hundred and fifty gold for each monster scalp they returned. At their request for more information, he directed them to the foreman Hieris, and reluctantly allowed them a sip of the bloodthistle wine to seal the deal, this time too distracted and annoyed by Scanlan's gnomish music to notice Vax filling his wineskin from the barrel.[5]

"The Feast" (1x24)[]

When Vex'ahlia, Grog, Scanlan, and Tiberius finally returned to get their money, Nostoc was surprised to see them and said he thought they had died. When they tried to explain what they did and the monsters they killed, he had a very hard time believing them. Due to this disbelief, he tried to reduce the price he paid them to eighteen thousand gold, but Scanlan suggested to him that he is an honorable man who should stick to his deal. Eventually, Nostoc paid them in full and told them if they ever spoke a bad word about him, he'd come after them. Grog proceeded to lighten the mood before Nostoc eventually kicked them out for advertising Gilmore's Glorious Goods.[6]

Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn[]

Following the exploits of Vox Machina in the Greyspine Quarry, many adventurers flocked to the mines seeking to perform great deeds. The enterprising mind of Nostoc Greyspine caught an immediate opportunity for profit — each adventurer who enters the mines had to pay a 25 gold fee, and he advertised the quarry as the "Gateway to the Depths". However, neither Greyspine nor the staff of the quarry bore any liability for death, dismemberment, or emotional trauma sustained with the depths.[7]
