Norbert is a muscular rock gnome with olive skin and blond flowy hair adorned with a hair band.[1]
History[]
At some point in his life Norbert became the physical trainer of the Mega Magic Paladins.
Around 839 PD[2] a yellow cloud appeared above their town, blocking the sun and ruining the crops. Many people left, and although the paladins tried to solve the problem they ended up in a strange trance in which they were stuck doing one single task, so Norbert stayed with them to protect them and their weapons. Eventually a group of adventurers, the Re-Slayer's Take, arrived to town, and although Norbert tried to attack them at first, thinking they were thieves bothering Zora the Red, he stopped after Heera Agneheart cast Friends on him, and when he heard their name he assumed they were associated to the Slayer's Take and welcomed them, telling them about the things happening in Seedfeld and asking for their help. When Farah Vallari asked he refused to give them the five daggers of the paladins, but he still offered his own help to solve whatever was ailing the other gnomes. While Frog was trying to confirm the nature of it, Norbert noticed that she was made of metal, and shared his astonishment about it, praising the monk.
Following Timpani Guff's advice, he left Seedfeld with them (leaving Poogs behind to take care of the paladins, and telling him he saw great promise in him) to guide them to Oogleberg, a mountain where the Slayer's Take had defeated a troll a decade before, and where there was a strange light. Climbing the mountain they encountered some cave fishers, but they managed to leave them behind (with Norbert cutting a tendril that was holding Frog and Heera) and reach the entrance of the cave.[3] After some rest and preparation they entered, just to reappear outside with some injuries but no memories; Norbert complained about a weird sensation, until they found a wound with a dark dart made of condensed and calcified fungus. Realizing there was strange magic in the area, Norbert and Frog decided to stay outside holding a rope while the other three went in, but after a bit Heera and Farah reappeared, without Timpani.
After deducing the connection of the cave and the Timberblight (an entity Norbert knew nothing of, so they had to explain it to him) Frog convinced the gnome to let her examine the pink dagger of the Mega Magic Paladins, and when she declared those weapons could be useful for their mission, he finally allowed for each of them to wield one, keeping the red one for himself; when they managed to activate their powers Norbert realized he had been doing it wrong by trying to use all of them at the same time. They entered the cave together, with Norbert blindly slashing with his weapon as a precaution, until they reached a chamber in which they found a very alarmed Timpani and the skeleton of Ügel in the process of being reanimated by yellow clouds.[4] Despite being scared, Norbert insisted that Timpani take the blue dagger and then placed himself in a defensive position, with his own dagger protecting him from the lair's necrotic energy; he then raged and recklessly attacked Ügel. Shortly after he encouraged Frog to activate the wind properties of her pink dagger when attacking the troll, although he was too close, he was thrown away when the monk listened to him; she apologized and tried to protect him from the next attack, but it was a blast of poison that engulfed everyone but Heera. As he was falling unconscious Norbert tried to focus on a good memory, like the time the Mega Magic Paladins accepted him as a trainer.
Norbert was healed by Timpani just in time to see how Heera defeated Ügel, but shortly after a presence (Grimm Heldwell) appeared in the reflective walls of the chamber, mocking the Re-Slayers and questioning their morality. Norbert instead argued that his new friends had done a lot of good, and encouraged them to destroy the troll's lair using the daggers: striking poses, they allowed Norbert to produce a blast of energy from his dagger, breaking the walls and erasing the necrotic energy there as the mountain started to collapse. They managed to exit before Ügelberg became a caldera, just as the cloud that blocked the sun over Seedfeld disappeared.[5]
Shortly after Norbert suggested to go back to the tavern, and as they were walking down, Farah fell, and he was fast enough to catch her; when the blood hunter praised him, the barbarian told her he worked out, although after that he asked Frog to carry him, and she agreed. In Seedfeld they were received by the recovered Mega Magic Paladins, who were very happy and congratulated Norbert for his good job; he, in turn, thanked Poogs for taking care of his friends, and the goblin gave him his headband back. The adventurers returned the daggers to the paladins, and after the latter heard from the Re-Slayer's Take how well Norbert had done by himself, they decided to reward him, making him the wielder of the secret white dagger; very excited, the gnome tried to strike a pose and the weapon started shining slightly, so the paladins told him it was the time for them to train him. The morning after the celebration, Norbert allowed the Re-Slayers to take a wagon to carry Heera, who was still very exhausted; as the adventuring party was leaving, the six members of the Mega Magic Paladins struck a pose together, producing a multicolored wave as a visual farewell.[6]
