A Nightfall Pearl is used to cast nighttime conditions across a wide area for 24 hours at a time.
Description[]
This item is a jet-black sphere six inches in diameter, and it is cold to the touch. The person attuned to the item can activate it over the course of ten minutes; within 10 miles of where the Pearl was activated, the area is shrouded in night, even during daylight hours. This effect lasts for 24 hours, or until the attuned person cancels the effect as an action, or until the attunement ends. Once activated, the Pearl can't be used again for 24 hours.[1]
Possible uses[]
The cities of the Kryn Dynasty are kept shaded or even in near-perpetual night by mighty dunamancers and other umbral magic. Arcane shields keep the capital of Rosohna shrouded in nighttime conditions for days or weeks at a time. This darkness is interrupted by brief, scheduled periods of sun-soaked worship of their god of light. This extended darkness makes it easier for races with sunlight sensitivity, from the majority drow to duergar and kobolds, to work more comfortably and effectively on the surface.[2][3]
Similarly, when the Dynasty went to war in 835 PD, the skies of the contested borderlands were described as growing dark.[4]
It's never explicitly stated that the Dynasty uses a Nightfall Pearl for these purposes, but the item first appeared in the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, which also described the practice of keeping their cities shaded.
