What's Midst? It's very simple. It's a weird surrealist fourth wall-breaking reality-bending science fantasy space western about a small, doomed planet floating in a cosmic ocean of spooky darkness, upon whose alien landscape an ensemble cast of characters, including a crotchety outlaw, a freakishly virtuous cultist and a weird, diabolical bastard, make awful decisions and fight like hell to survive when the moon falls out of the sky and a large number of terrible things happen in rapid succession.

Midst is "an immersive, semi-improvised sci-fantasy series in which three mysterious and unreliable narrators spin a tale about complicated antiheroes making bad decisions in a world on the edge of disaster."[2]

The story[]

"Midst is set in the 'space-western' town of Stationary Hill, on the doomed desert planet of Midst, and follows three protagonists – a crotchety outlaw, a struggling cultist and a diabolical bastard – as their paths intersect in unexpected ways."[3] They are all trying to survive as they tie up loose ends, betray everyone who’s ever given them a chance, and question the broken society they were born into, facing all these obstacles right as the moon explodes.

The characters[]

  • Lark: Hunter/Trapper
  • Moc Weepe: Impresario, Black Candle Cabaret
  • Phineas Thatch: Adsecla to the Prime Consector
  • Atticus Concord: "Businessman" and Former Reporter
  • Sherman Guthrie: Bartender, Black Candle Cabaret
  • Tzila Guthrie: Precocious Preteen
  • Saskia Del Norma: Founder, Black Candle Cabaret
  • Jonas Spahr: Prime Consector of the Trust
  • Jedediah Pom: Media Attaché to the Consector[4]
  • Francis “Fuze” Peabody: Is going to die
  • Imelda Goldfinch: The head notary of the Trust on Midst

Production[]

Midst originally consisted of thirty-eight 15- to 40-minute podcasts spread over two seasons, which were released beginning January 28, 2020 through April 29, 2022.[5]

The show was created by a multimedia performance trio called Third Person (Xen, Sarah Wile, and Matt Roen), who originally preferred to remain anonymous while voicing all of the characters. They are also the creators of an unrelated six-episode podcast called "Blueberries Hill", a Beatrix Potter-inspired storybook series.

Acquisition by Critical Role Productions LLC/Metapigeon LLC[]

On March 29, 2023, Critical Role announced that they had made Midst their first acquisition of an outside-produced property.[6] The episodes of the first two seasons were remastered with updated sound and music and re-released beginning April 11, 2023, with additional "lightly-animated video editions" on various podcast apps, the Critical Role YouTube Channel, and the Midst website. The second season began re-release August 23, 2023,[7] and a new, third and final season released beginning February 14, 2024[8] for a further 19 episodes. At the same time, Critical Role announced they would continue their partnership with Third Person following the conclusion of Midst.[9]

Third Person and Critical Role later announced Moonward, a four-part miniseries audio drama set in the world of Midst, in which the actors of Third Person are joined by Marisha Ray and Liam O'Brien. The show is set shortly after the events of Midst's three seasons, featuring a group of characters "on an expedition to locate the sunken remains of Midst's destroyed moon." The first full trailer for Moonward was released on July 24, 2024.[10]
