Hey, I noticed that you got permission to include the CoupleOfKooks from EGtW. Have you asked the artist who did drew the holy symbols in EGtW if they would be open to allowing us to put their art on the wiki? I would ask myself, but I'm a little shy about these things, so I thought I'd reach you to ask you since you've done it before...
One thing that I thought would be kind of cool is if we could have uploaded images of each holy symbol that are the same size, both in length and width, with the holy symbol centered in the middle. It would mean that we could include multiple symbols next to each other, maybe in a chart or something, and it would all look very polished.
Are the four pieces of art added so far tonight available anywhere not behind a paywall? Used to promote the book or in DnD Beyond's free content? EDIT: Nevermind, answered the question when I went to the art pages themselves.
Yes, while I did specifically reached out to CoupleOfKooks, I believe that all the art in the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount counts as fair use. This is the way the Forgotten Realms wiki cites the use of art published by Wizards of the Coast.
The maps were added before my time. And I've bought the argument that they qualify as "Fair Use" because the images were freely available in multiple locations including the CR Store and we're using fairly lo-res. I'm not sure those arguments apply here, though. Freely admitting copyright is not my area of expertise, so if you have more knowledge, please share!
I sent you a message over on your Tumblr, but having done so Anonymously I realise now there'd be no way for you to respond to me. I have downloaded the Elven Tower assets and installed them in Wonderdraft. I can use them on my own maps just fine!
However, when I attempt to load your Eastern Exandria Map none of the forests, mountains, grasses, etc load in. I've been trying to fix this for two hours now and can't think of any reason why things aren't loading correctly. Perhaps it has to do with HOW the sprites are loaded / named / organised into your assets folder?
Please help in any way that you can... I'd be forever grateful.
Hi, again. Checking in on the art of the cinderslag elemental. I don't see where we have a permission from the artist or copyright holder? I added a placeholder art caption, but the information needs to be added to the art's page. Otherwise, I'll need to take it down.
If we don't have permission from that artist, you might want to try contacting them (or the copyright holder) and see if they'll agree to its use here.
Hi! I saw you'd added maps from the Explorer's Guide, but I don't see where we have permission from either the publisher or Deven Rue, the artist, to use them. Do you have a permission from either, and if so, could you add it to the art description? If you don't, I'm afraid we'll need to take them down.
This is actually a really tricky grey area, but giving it a LOT of thought, I think we should err on the side of caution.
It seems like it comes down to a question of whether it would qualify as "Fair Use" or not. You might want to take a look at Wikipedia for a summary of the tests for what constitutes "Fair Use". There are four prongs to consider and the answers aren't always clear.
My suggestion? Try contacting Deven Rue and see if she'll agree to having her maps reproduced on the wiki. She very well might say yes. But the last thing in the world I want is for the wiki to get in trouble with her, D&D Beyond, or Critical Role for using something we shouldn't. So in the meantime, I've taken them down, but with the hopes we will be able to add them back at some point because they're lovely!
Also, we can link to their appearance on the DnD Beyond website - and pending possible permission from Deven, could you add notes to the pages giving the links?
Thanks as always for your contributions! They are very much appreciated and your own map-making skills are excellent (witness how close your Wildemount map ended up being to the official one).
