Marius LePual is a half-elf tramp-turned-sailor and (presumably) boatswain of the Nein Heroez. As an NPC, Marius is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Appearance[]

MariusCRA

Marius in Crit Recap Animated.

Marius is a skinny, handsome, half-elven man with blonde hair cut short on the sides and a curl of hair that flops down on his forehead.[1]

Personality[]

Marius is a roguish and opportunistic individual with a reputation for landing himself in trouble. He told the Mighty Nein that he is a pretty talented cook.[2] He is also very concerned about his appearance, being extremely distressed when Beau ruins his expensive shirt sleeves, and is self-conscious about his hair and teeth.[3]

Biography[]

Background[]

"The Journey Home" (2x30)[]

Marius LePual was the person mentioned in the letter written by Avantika that the Mighty Nein found in Lorenzo's Bag of Holding, to whom the Cloven Crystal was to be delivered.[4]

"Dockside Diplomacy" (2x35)[]

Marius attempted to meet with the crew and captain of The Mist, but his meeting was interrupted when the crew attacked the Mighty Nein, who proceeded to kill most of the crew, set sail, and kidnap Marius. During this event, Beauregard choked him with her quarterstaff, Nott tied him up, Yasha later tied him to the mast, and the Mighty Nein said they probably wouldn't kill him. Marius took those odds over being killed.

"O Captain, Who's Captain?" (2x36)[]

Marius remained tied to the mast for a while, falling asleep there. He was woken up by Beau and Fjord, who questioned him and learned that he never intended to go on the ship, and just wanted to meet with the captain to give back the money he was hired with, since he was unable to retrieve the Cloven Crystal. Marius was later freed and allowed to walk within the ship, though Fjord let him know that he was stuck with them.[5]

Marius stayed aboard the ship (now known as The Mistake) while the Mighty Nein returned to Nicodranas to hire a crew before setting sail again. He had a conversation with Caduceus, asking whether he would be released; he wondered if Caduceus would be willing to leave alongside him. Although Caduceus wouldn't commit to running away, he assured Marius he could help him leave if it came to that.[6]

"A Pirate's Life for Me" (2x41)[]

Marius had no alternative but to remain aboard The Mistake as the Mighty Nein sailed through the Lucidian Ocean in pursuit of their own objectives, which led them to explore the island of Urukayxl; sail alongside pirate captain Avantika's ship, the Squalleater; and, eventually, to dock at Darktow Isle.[7] Marius expressed his unease as they arrived on Darktow, not fully knowing where they were. The Mighty Nein pointed out that he had become "a pirate" and should toughen up, suggesting pirate names for him to use.[8]

"A Hole In the Plan" (2x42)[]

Marius assisted Orly Skiffback in watching out for the ship's crew as the Mighty Nein intended to continue their own exploratory plans. Although Jester suggested they could take The Mistake and leave should they not return, Marius appeared to be somewhat unsure about leaving without the rest of the group.[9]

"In Hot Water" (2x43)[]

The Mighty Nein's attempts to uncover more information about Avantika resulted in a battle against her crew.[10] At its conclusion, the Mighty Nein and their crewmates were banished from Darktow and had to leave The Mistake behind, taking possession of the Squalleater.[11] Later, after spending some more time at sea, as the Nein prepared to head underwater to reach Diver's Grave, Marius offered to look after Sprinkle for Jester.[12]

"The Stowaway" (2x45)[]

Marius was surprised to see Twiggy, a stowaway who had been found aboard the ship.[13] Twiggy and the Mighty Nein (except for Yasha) were temporarily teleported away from the ship by Twiggy's "Happy Fun Ball of Tricks", leaving the crew puzzled; while they were absent, the ship, now renamed as the Balleater, docked in Bisaft Isle. Marius and the rest of the crew had to wait for seven days until the Nein reappeared and were able to pay the dockmaster for repairs made to the ship.[14]

"Homeward Bound" (2x48)[]

The Balleater returned to Nicodranas. The Mighty Nein made Orly the new captain and set off to Felderwin. Marius stayed with the ship as part of Orly's crew, apparently as his boatswain ("bo'sun").[15]

"The Fancy and the Fooled" (2x97)[]

Marius was on the Balleater eating a sausage when the Mighty Nein visited it in Nicodranas harbor. He had grown about as much beard as a half-elf can muster and adopted a faux-weathered fashion look. Orly Skiffback said they were working on him, and he figured it would take about three more years.

"Dark Waters" (2x98)[]

"High Seas, High Stakes" (2x99)[]

Relationships[]

Orly Skiffback[]

Orly and Marius have been friends since before they met the Mighty Nein. On occasion, when Marius needed a place to stay, Orly would let him crash on his couch.[16] When first questioned by the Mighty Nein, Orly deliberately withheld information to protect Marius.[17] While on Darktow, Orly and Marius were protective of the rest of the Nein's hired crew.[18] Marius was distressed when Orly was killed in battle.[19]

The Mighty Nein[]

The Mighty Nein and Marius have a troubled history. Their relationship began when the Mighty Nein kidnapped Marius in "Dockside Diplomacy" (2x35). Afterwards, Marius stayed on as a part of their crew, and sailed with the party across the Lucidian Ocean. Along with Orly, Gallan, and Shelda, Marius is one of the permanent crewmembers who looks after the Mighty Nein's ships while they are away on other business. While intimidated by the Nein, Marius is nonetheless loyal to them. He was initially happy to see the Mighty Nein return to Nicodranas, and aided them in defending the Balleater against minions of Uk'otoa in "Dark Waters" (2x98).[20]

The Mighty Nein (and their players) have a running gag about how useless Marius is, and frequently blame him when things go wrong.[21][22][23] Fjord, Yasha, and Beauregard in particular have implied that Marius should prove himself to them by committing murder.[24][25][26]
