Mariner's Armor is a type of magical armor that has enchantments allowing its wearer to move underwater more effectively and buoying them to the surface if they fall unconscious. It is found as various types of armor.
The Mighty Nein found a Mariner's Studded Leather in the sewers beneath Zadash. Its enchantment was transferred to Fjord's personal leather breastplate, now called a Mariner's Breastplate.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Mariner's Armor can be found as various types of armor and is typically decorated with fish and shell motifs.[1]
The original Mariner's Armor found by the Mighty Nein was a beautiful dark gray studded leather, and the set comprised an arm guard, a bracer, a shoulder piece, plates to protect the torso, and leg guards.[2] The pieces had shells pressed into them[3] and a pressed leather scrolling of curling turquoise waves that was only visible when directly lit.[2]
Fjord's personal breastplate, considered Mariner's Armor after the enchantment was transferred, is a leather breastplate. It was additionally cleaned and restored to new leather condition when Pumat Sol transferred the enchantment.[4]
Properties[]
- The wearer gains a swimming speed equal to their walking speed.[1] Matt has ruled that this allows Fjord to ignore the difficult terrain movement penalty imposed by walking through high water, even if he is not submerged or swimming.[5][6]
- Whenever the wearer starts their turn underwater and with 0 hit points, they rise 60 feet toward the surface.[1]
History[]
Campaign Two: The Mighty Nein[]
- "Waste and Webs" (2x10): The Mighty Nein found the studded leather armor in a phase spider nest in the sewers underneath Zadash on the body of a person with tattoos suggesting they were a sailor.[3] After casting Identify on the armor, Caleb Widogast offered Fjord the set in exchange for the Glove of Blasting. Fjord asked Caleb to instead trade him an explanation of his history with fire, but after Caleb struggled to do so and requested Fjord ask again later, Fjord gave him the glove for the armor.[7]
- "Zemnian Nights" (2x11): Fjord commissioned Pumat Sol to transfer the Mariner's Armor enchantment to his existing leather breastplate because his current armor had "a little bit more intrinsic value" and he disliked the strong ocean theme of the original Mariner's Armor.[8] He paid 80 gp to transfer the enchantment.[4] He picked up his breastplate with its new Mariner's Armor enchantment one hour later.[9]
- "Stalker in the Swamp" (2x21): The armor kept Fjord afloat after he was knocked unconscious in a pool of water by a merrow.[10]
- "Encroaching Waters" (2x34): The combat against two water elementals is the first instance where Fjord was ruled unaffected by the difficult terrain imposed by wading through knee-to-thigh high water due to the swimming speed granted by his armor.[5]
Call of the Netherdeep[]
In 836 PD, the cleric Dermot Wurder acquired a set of Mariner's Plate Armor for delving into Cael Morrow and the Netherdeep.[11]
Trivia[]
- Fjord's Gift of the Depths Eldritch Invocation, which he took at warlock 7 starting in "A Pirate's Life for Me" (2x41), duplicates part of the Mariner's Armor enchantment. Both grant him a swimming speed equal to his walking speed.
