Mantraps are large carnivorous flytrap-like[1][6] plants that grow in wet, tropical environments.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Mantraps appear similar to ferns, with three to four large leaves spread outward,[7] able to snap shut vertically forming a maw. They are largely sessile, but are able to uproot and crawl slowly across the ground.[8]
Abilities[]
- False Appearance: Unless the mantrap moves, it appears indistinguishable from an ordinary tropical plant.[1]
- Attractive Pollen: When the mantrap detects a creature nearby using its tremorsense, it can release a cloud of yellow pollen out to a radius of 30 feet. Each beast and humanoid within that cloud must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it attempts to move as close to the mantrap as possible. An affected creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. A mantrap can only release this cloud of pollen once per day.[1]
- Engulf: The mantrap swallows a Medium or smaller creature within its reach. Such a creature is restrained within its leafy jaws, and takes acid damage at the start of each of its turns. A mantrap can only engulf one creature at a time.[1]
History[]
"Stalker in the Swamp" (2x21)[]
While traveling through the Labenda Swamp to secure The Gentleman's safe house, the Mighty Nein encountered several mantraps.[9] Calianna Mordsson attempted to burn one with a Fireball, which it survived but was quickly dispatched with the help of the rest of the party.[10] They later encountered another, which their guide Febron Keyes nearly walked into after succumbing to its pollen. Calianna was able to save him by Levitating him above it.[11]
"With Great Power..." (2x94)[]
After attempting to intimidate the jungle of the Whitedawn Lagoon into allowing the Mighty Nein to pass through unimpeded, Fjord immediately stepped into a mantrap, which instantly closed around him. Yasha Nydoorin was able to wrench the leafy jaws open, allowing Fjord to cut his way out using Dwueth'var.[12]
"A Test of Worth" (E1x05)[]
While traveling through the Rifenmist Jungle, the Crown Keepers encountered a Qoniira ruin that was surrounded by numerous mantraps.[13]
