Malvolio Contreras is a man from Tal'Dorei and the servant of a mysterious dark force. As an NPC, Malvolio is played by Robbie Daymond.
Description[]
Malvolio was dressed in elegant golden clothes, with a jewel adorning his bolo tie, and a hat from which large horns protruded. However, his outfit contained several false elements: his boots were created by magic to hide his bare feet,[3] and his hat displayed the large horns to disguise the real, much smaller ones underneath.[4]
The MC appeared to be very confidence, but he was actually deeply insecure and sensitive, having to be reassured to be able to do his job.[5]
Biography[]
Background[]
According to the tale he told the adventurers he kidnapped, he was a humble boy who grew up near Byroden, until one day, in 843 PD, his dog found a gem in the road. The item was crafted it into his bolo tie, and then he started becoming more powerful, and with a growing hatred for heroes, on whom he wanted to take revenge.[6] Those new feelings and strength came from a dark entity freed during the apogee solstice, and Malvolio became its servant.[7]
"Total Party Kill: Chicago Live 2025" (Sx95)[]
A few months after the end of the Era of Reclamation Malvolio created a show for several Exandrian souls in a pocket dimension provided by his patron; in order to entertain that audience he decided to summon and torture several heroes: Grog Strongjaw, Fearne Calloway, Caleb Widogast, Beauregard Lionett, Jester Lavorre, Veth Brenatto, and Kingsley Tealeaf. After explaining that they were going to participate in a series of tests, Malvolio (or the MC, as he called himself) began the show, trying to keep it active and dynamic, and getting irritated when the adventurers did not cooperate as he would like; at one point Jester offered him to be a maid of honor at her wedding, and he attacked her with necrotic magic in response.
After a small pause, the show was supposed to continue, but the contestants decided to join forces to attack Malvolio and Merty. During the fight, the powers of the MC grew and dwindled depending on how confident he felt, so the adventurers tried to find ways to embarrass him. At one point the dark force that had granted him his powers spoke to him, reminding him that he would lose his magic if he didn't kill his enemies; however, that same force helped Malvolio by dispelling the Immovable Object Caleb had cast on his coat, so he could move and focus better. Fearne told the MC that if he wanted, he could team up with them against the dark force, but he ended up rejecting the offer. Eventually Kingsley defeated him by stealing the jewel that gave him most of his powers, leaving him defenseless; Malvolio tried to present himself as harmless and pitiful as possible, but ended up running away after distracting them all with some dance. After that, the pocket dimension started collapsing, and all the adventurers returned to Exandria.
Relationships[]
Merty[]
Merty was very helpful to Malvolio and was willing to help him at any moment, encouraging him and going along with his every move most of the time, and helping him by attacking their enemies with his long claws.[8] He also seemed to feel a certain level of attraction toward him, which was not reciprocated, even though Malvolio loves him like a brother and considered him his best and only friend (something the henchman saw as sad).[9][10][11]
However, ultimately Merty served not only the MC, but also the dark force that served as their patron, and part of his role was to ensure that Malvolio did his job.[12]
Character information[]
Abilities[]
Malvolio had a well of dark arcana (apparently connected to the Abyss)[13] empowering him, a gift from his patron. He is immune to the charmed, paralyzed, and frightened conditions.[14] He also gained shapeshifting abilities that helped him change his appearance and clothing as he wished.[15] Moreover, he presented the following abilities:
- Unnamed spell attack that deals necrotic damage.[16]
- Fiery Encore: Malvolio attacks up to four times with flaming projectiles.[17]
- Manifest Contestant (1/rest): Malvolio teleports an enemy to block an attack that was meant for him.[18]
- Impossible Trivia: Malvolio asks an extremely difficult question, dealing psychic damage to the person unable to answer it.[19]
- Bardic Demoralization (bonus action): Malvolio weakens an enemy, seemingly with the opposite version of a Bardic Inspiration.[20]
- Unflappable Confidence: The confidence of Malvolio makes him somewhat resistant to damage, and can be strengthened or weakened by others. If he is too embarrassed, Unflappable Confidence is nullified.[21]
- This is My Domain (passive ability): At any moment, Malvolio can alter the appearance of the battlefield in his pocket dimension.[22]
- Multitasker (legendary action): It allows Malvolio to retaliate after someone's turn.[23]
- The Deadly Game: Malvolio creates an entirely new and dangerous space in which two enemies have to compete against each other.[24]

Trivia[]
- His name is Italian, and can be translated as "ill will" or more literally "I don't want to"; it comes from a character from one of Shakespeare's comedies, Twelfth Night, or What You Will.[26] His surname is Spanish in origin, and coloquially it refers to a person who is very contrarian and disagrees with others.[27]
- Robbie Daymond admitted that Malvolio wasn't completely sincere about his backstory, but some of the things he said were actually true.[28]
- Even though he was his enemy, Malvolio was somewhat in awe with Caleb and his magic.[29]
