Luc Brenatto is the son of Yeza and Veth Brenatto originally from the village of Felderwin. As an NPC, Luc is played by Matthew Mercer. As a player character, he is played by Sam Riegel.
Description[]
Appearance[]
When the Mighty Nein first met him, Luc was a small halfling boy no older than five years old. He had shaggy light brown hair and blue eyes.
As of 843 PD, now a teenager, Luc had dyed his hair black and green and was trying to grow a mustache.[10]
Personality[]
Luc was described by his mother as being very intelligent for his age, having learned to walk and talk earlier than usual for a halfling.[11]
When the Mighty Nein found him with Old Edith in Felderwin, Luc appeared both traumatized and somewhat desensitized regarding the constant violence that had been happening around him, and losing first his mother, and then his father. He was not trusting of Nott when she approached him at Edith's house. Later, after having been sent to Nicodranas for safety in the care of Shakäste, and being reunited with his father and at least temporarily with his mother, he began to blossom and became a normal, rambunctious child, with a definite streak of his mother's adventurous spirit.
While Veth was off at the peace negotiations and then Traveler Con, Luc and his father moved from their temporary quarters at the Lavish Chateau into their own home in Nicodranas. Luc seemed to adore living there, telling his mother excitedly about his friends and their adventures. He definitely seemed to take after his mother, enjoying his toy crossbow, practicing his stealth, and occasionally stealing from merchants, and Veth (to Yeza's dismay) was encouraging this.[12]
By 843 PD, Luc was a teenager and both rebellious and idealistic, wanting to be "part of the solution" and constantly giving his mother a hard time, partially due to some of the skills she had taught him.[13]
Biography[]
Background[]
Luc was born to Yeza and Veth Brenatto, the owners and proprietors of the Brenatto Apothecary in Felderwin. He was three or four years old when his family was captured by a band of marauding goblins during a hard winter, and he was beginning to starve when his mother sacrificed herself to ensure Luc and his father got away safely. Yeza and Luc believed Veth had been killed by the goblins, and when she began sending small packages with trinkets and money to them (at first anonymously) during the Mighty Nein's travels, Yeza did not tell Luc who was claiming to send them.
During this time, Yeza was hired by Vess DeRogna of the Cerberus Assembly to experiment on the Luxon beacon still in possession of the Dwendalian Empire, attempting to draw its fate-changing qualities into a potion. Luc was sent away to his room when the "mean lady" came to visit the apothecary to check on progress. When the Kryn attacked Felderwin and burned the Apothecary to the ground, Luc escaped by running to the home of Old Edith, who took him in and cared for him, telling him his father was away helping the war. Luc suspected she was lying and that his father was dead, like his mother.
When Veth appeared at Old Edith's (Nott taking care to always use Disguise Self to appear in her halfling form to him), Luc hung back, not trusting her and reluctant to be hugged and kissed. He did tell her "Don't die" before disappearing back into Edith's house. A few days later, Veth and the rest of the Mighty Nein used Sending to ask Shakaste to take both Luc and Edith to the Lavish Chateau in Nicodranas for safety during the war. Once they had rescued Yeza from the Kryn, the family was briefly reunited and Luc seemed to be coming out of his shell, happily playing with his mother's crossbow and with Nugget. Yeza and Luc settled into the Lavish Chateau while Veth continued on with the Mighty Nein, seeking her re-transformation into her true halfling form.
"Homeward Bound" (2x48)[]
Nott cast Disguise Self to look like a halfling woman before knocking on the door of Old Edith's house. Luc recognized Nott's disguised form as his mother but was confused because his father had told Luc that goblins killed his mother. Luc said he thought his father was probably dead too, but that he himself hadn't been hurt because Yeza put him in his room when "the mean lady with the pointy ears" would come by. Yeza had given Luc the packages Nott sent, but did not tell him who they were from. When soldiers from Xhorhas attacked, Yeza told Luc to hide and he ran to Old Edith. Before going back inside the house, Luc told Nott, "Don't die."[14]
"Family Gathering" (2x71)[]
The Mighty Nein, Nugget, and Yeza teleported to Nicodranas to meet up with Old Edith and Luc. Before entering the Lavish Chateau, Nott cast Disguise Self to make herself look like Veth. Yeza told Luc his mother was a great adventurer and suggested Nott show Luc her crossbow. Nott took the bolts out and let Luc play with it. Luc did not want to give up the crossbow so Jester and Nott suggested he take Nugget instead. Nott threw in a grappling hook and Luc agreed. The Mighty Nein, Luc, and Yeza spent the rest of the day at the beach.[15]
The next morning, Nott helped Yeza convince Luc to eat all of his breakfast.[16] Nott told Luc she was going on another trip and he could keep practicing with a training crossbow if he was good. Luc made her promise to remember all the things she shot and tell him about them. Caleb brought Luc, Nott, and Yeza along while he drew the Teleportation Circle to transport them back to Rosohna.[17]
"The Fancy and the Fooled" (2x97)[]
When the Mighty Nein returned to Nicodranas with the spell to return Nott to her halfling form, she cast Invisibility so neither Luc nor Yeza would see her as a goblin until she had been changed back. Luc was apparently quite happy living in the city, having developed mischievous tendencies, and ignoring the important change his mother would go through. Once the spell was successful Veth Brenatto reunited with her son and husband, without disguises, and soon after she left Luc with the Mighty Nein so she and Yeza could spend some quality time as husband and wife in private.
"Between a Ball and a Hot Place" (2x129)[]
After casting Plane Shift to escape Nicodranas, the Mighty Nein along with their family members were teleported to the Elemental Plane of Fire. When Veth and Jester decided to investigate the outside of the cave they were in, they alerted a fire elemental, who angrily chased them back into the cave. During the ensuing battle, Luc was killed after the elemental set the inside of the cavern ablaze. He was later revived by Caduceus and had a heart to heart with his parents to help process the situation.
After Campaign Two[]
Luc joined the Wildemount Wildlings Camp in Nicodranas, at first as a young but talented camper, and eventually an equally young instructor for younger children, teaching them stealth, spellcraft, and alchemy.[18] At some point Veth took him with her on a trip to the Feywild, and its strange magic aged him some years, turning him into a rebellious teenager who became more and more frustrated with his lack of freedom, for his desire for adventures directly opposed his parents' attempts to keep him alive and safe. In 843 PD, he ran away from home, and Veth had to call Kingsley Tealeaf to help her locate Luc, who had managed to reach Alfield.[19]
"The Mighty Nein Reunion: Echoes of the Solstice" (Sx79)[]
A month after he ran away, Luc was still angry at Veth and was constantly picking the lock of his own room each time he was locked in. When the apogee solstice started, some sea creatures attacked Nicodranas and Luc wasn't allowed to lead young adventurers to fight them. When the Mighty Nein visited to ask for Veth's assistance in their battle against the now-freed Trent Ikithon, Veth declined to join, with her current responsibilities and the tense situation with Luc taking priority. Luc was angry at his mother again for that and was sent to his room, but while his parents were distracted he dashed into Caleb's Teleportation Circle, taking with him many tools and items from his parents (including Veth's Aeorian Security Cannon). Although his godfather Caleb was convinced that Veth would kill him when she found out about it, the party agreed to take Luc with them on their mission.[20]
At first the adventurers were very careful with the teenager, which proved to be wise when the drunken investigator Aggy was Disintegrated in a heavily trapped area (which shocked Luc a lot). However, when he got the chance to prove his skills, Luc was able to use his Magic Hand combined with his rogue abilities to safely inspect drawers that Trent Ikithon had opened.[21] Although Luc boasted about his sense and the treasures he had stolen from his parents, Caleb was still concerned, and after a stern talk with him he decided to give him as much protection as possible, passing to him his luck stone and casting Wish to have a Simulacrum of himself with his godson at all times. The young adventurer called Caleb a good teacher, in contrast to Caleb's former teacher Master Ikithon.[22]
The following day the Mighty Nein traveled to Blumenthal, and for extra protection Luc drank a potion his father had been preparing for a year (which granted him the abilities of a more skilled adventurer)[23] and Caduceus cast Death Ward on him. While Caleb and Jester were confronting Trent, Luc stayed behind with Caleb II Polymorphed into a sabertooth tiger. When the battle finally started Luc's newly acquired Evasion helped him reduce the damage of the enemy's Meteor Swarm. His See Invisibility was useful to reveal where Trent was hiding,[24] and when the archmage, cornered, freed an abyssal monster to protect himself, Luc cast Enlarge on Caleb 2 (now in the shape of a T-Rex) to fight the entity. The young halfling helped defeat Trent and his demonic ally by localizing the artifact it was sealed in still in its chest, after which Beauregard managed to tear it free, trapping both enemies inside it.[25]
After the adventure Luc finally was accepted as part of the Mighty Nein, and although he was happy, he also felt the need to go back home (probably grounded again). The adventurers agreed to bring him back to Nicodranas after a victory party.[26]
Relationships[]
Veth Brenatto/Nott the Brave[]
Luc was confused to see his mother (Nott used Disguise Self to look like Veth when she talked to him) since Yeza told him she was dead. He did not seem to trust her or be happy to see her. Until she told him, Luc did not realize the presents from packages Yeza gave him came from her. This seems to further confuse him. Although still seeming distrustful, Luc asked Veth not to die.[27]
As a teenager, Luc was having a more difficult relationship with his parents as his idealistic aspirations of becoming a hero came up against their desire to keep him alive and safe.[28]
Yeza Brenatto[]
Yeza seems to be protective of Luc. He hid his work with the Cerberus Assembly and had Luc hide whenever an assembly member would come to their house. For unknown reasons, Yeza told him that his mother was dead even after receiving letters signed as Veth. Despite this, he still gave Luc the presents Nott sent in the packages. Even though no one had confirmed it, Luc assumed that his father was dead after being taken.[29] After his return Yeza became Luc's main parent figure again for some months, until Veth stopped adventuring for the most part.
Caleb Widogast[]
Caleb took time whenever visiting Luc and Yeza to entertain the younger Brenotto with magic and offer him lessons. After retiring from adventuring, he gave Luc lessons in basic spells like Dancing Lights and Caleb's Produce Flame. As the boy's spellcraft improved, Luc came to see Caleb as an uncle and to respect him even when showing no such courtesy to his mother. While Caleb was proud of the boy, the death of his own mother gave him reason to be greatly offended whenever Luc took his mother for granted. He was the most opposed to bringing Luc to fight Trent against Veth's wishes and made sure to show his displeasure by grounding him in a Wall of Force. Still, after Luc proved vital in exposing Trent, Caleb couldn't hide his pride in the boy.[30]
Old Edith[]
Old Edith, a human woman who also lives in Felderwin, seems to be a friend of the Brenatto family. Luc came to her after Yeza told him to run during the attack by soldiers from Xhorhas. With Shakaste guiding them, Old Edith accompanied Luc to the Menagerie Coast and the two made it the safety of Nicodranas, where they stayed at the Lavish Chateau with Marion Lavorre until Nott and Yeza could visit.
Caduceus Clay[]
Luc became close friends with the Mighty Nein's firbolg cleric Caduceus after being returned to life by him. He affectionately referred to him as "Uncle Duce," to Caduceus' chagrin.
Fjord[]
Unlike Veth, who constantly mocked the half-orc, Luc admired Fjord a lot, and considered him very cool, being also aware that his uncle appreciated flattery and using it to his own benefit.
Beth[]
She's a fellow counselor in the Wildemount Wildings Camp, and Luc seems to have a crush on her, wanting to impress her.[31]

Quotations[]
- (to Veth) "You're not going to go out there and help save the world when I want to do the same! I want to learn the same things you did, that you taught me. I want to change the world around me. I want to go with my friends and I want to do good things."[52]
Trivia[]
- His name is the French variant of Luke, which in turn comes from lux, which means "light" in Latin.
- Sam Riegel named the character Luc because he almost called his son that name; it is his son's great-grandfather's name.[53]
- It is unknown if Luc is a Lightfoot halfling like his mother.
- So far Luc is the youngest Exandrian spellcaster known, being (along with a fourteen year old teenager) the only person in the Wildemount Wildings camp who actually cast a spell thanks to Caleb's teachings, in his case one single globule of Dancing Lights.[54]
- Luc is the first NPC to later become a player character.
- Luc's constantly shifting age and age-related behavior in Campaign Two became something of a running gag, which Sam capitalized on in "The Mighty Nein Reunion: Echoes of the Solstice" (Sx79), refusing to be pinned down about Luc's actual age in the episode beyond "teenager" (somewhere between 13 and 17) and stating vaguely that halflings "mature a little bit faster". The issue with his age was canonically resolved by explaining that his visit to the Fey Realm had made him age in a way that made it difficult to clarify.[55]
