Loquatius Seelie is a changeling warlock/bard in the city of Avalir. He is played by Sam Riegel.

Description[]

Loquatius and Laerryn - Ro Smith

Fan art of Loquatius and Laerryn, by Ro Smith.[art 2]

Appearance[]

In his original form, Loquatius has pale gray marble-like skin with shifting black veins, white eyes with dark shading around them, and white hair in an upshock; whenever he transforms the veins in his skin move and colors start changing as if pigments were being taken and added to a painting. He wears a golden jacket with purple lining, and carries himself in a haughty fashion.[5]

Personality[]

Loquatius is flamboyant, larger-than-life, and very much enjoys the life of a celebrity and the perks that come with it.

Biography[]

Background[]

Loquatius Seelie is a broadcaster in the Herald's Tome of Avalir. He is originally from the Feywild,[6] a member of the Seelie Court and a warlock under the service of Lady Elmenore.[2] He arrived to Exandria and eventually fell in love with a mortal woman, Laerryn Coramar. They married in Domunas during the Replenishment, but despite still loving each other, in less than seven years they divorced due to their differences, with Quay abandoning their home in Avalir.[7][8]

"Excelsior" (E3x01)[]

The morning of the day before the city was to land for The Replenishment, Loquatius Seelie was, as usual, broadcasting the morning on giant screens placed around the city. Once he finished, he interrogated his assistant about his lack of ratings and learned that the problem was ongoing civil construction. The Architect Arcane responsible was his ex-wife Laerryn Coramar-Seelie who was avoiding returning his messages. He took private transportation to visit her personally, where she was fully occupied with the apparent imminent success of her long work. Loquatius arrived and they bickered until the first of the spell kites of Cathmoíra drifted upward past the window, burdened with homemade gifts. The two resolved to be on their best behavior for the foreseeable future. Loquatius picked up a kite meant for him and they returned to their respective responsibilities.

Loquatius arrived at Patia's Replenishment party with a plus-one, Bolo, and made his way through the waiting paparazzi with evident pleasure. He and Zerxus followed the departing Purvan Suul from the party, which has they later learned likely saved Purvan's life.

"Bitterness and Dread" (E3x02)[]

After learning about Vespin Chloras's warning to Cerrit, Loquatius counseled keeping silent about all the ill omens and warnings to maintain calm. When they inspected the body of the cultist Cerrit had killed, Loquatius realized the cultist had come to the Palace to complete a task necessary for whatever had been set in motion. Later, Loquatius and Cerrit went to Loquatius's office at the Herald's Tome to check his records about Vespin Chloras, finding an eight-year-old recorded interview of someone else with Vespin in the background. He was talking with Lacrytia Hollow and Loras of the Weaver's Mask about the pact with the Gau Drashari and why that has made re-creating the Raven Queen's Ritual of Seeding so difficult. But, Vespin said, Avalir bears the Tree of Names, which the Arboreal Calix was built over and around 120 years ago. Cerrit noticed missing records concerning Evandrin Alterra in the reporter Elena Tuvaris's file, and questioned Loquatius, but Loquatius denied knowing her current whereabouts.

When the Ring of Brass received Laerryn's telepathic alert to meet immediately at the Helm, Loquatius along with the others found himself surrounded and facing Lacrytia Hollow.

"Blood and Shadow" (E3x03)[]

In the battle against Lacrytia and her forces, Loquatius and his friends faced various spellcasters and fiends. During the battle both Laerryn and Zerxus used their magical abilities to protect the changeling, who used this event and the loss of his ex-wife's Arcane Ward later to tease her. Loquatius inspired the First Knight, and later incapacitated Milus Phren casting Psychic Lance on him. However, the Herald of Avalir soon retreated from the battle when Laerryn took him with her using Dimension Door.

They appeared in the Meridian Labyrinth, where several K'nauthi were attacking an eldritch battery which the former couple defended. Loquatius questioned the Architect Arcane about what she was protecting and why. He was concerned about the reputation of the elven wizard, and given the possibility that the situation Avalir was experiencing would be investigated, he began to send messages preventing her from being connected to it and hiding her planeshifting project, using Lacrytia Hollow as scapegoat. He also took the opportunity to record a message in case something happened to him, presenting Laerryn as a hero who had discovered a great danger and himself as the person who tried to prevent her from revealing it. Just before the Ring of Brass gathered again, Laerryn sneakily put a piece of raw ether (to restore some of his magic in case he needed it) in her ex-husband's pocket as a gesture of affection. When the group of friends met in the Labyrinth, Zerxus, worried about the group's insincerity, cast Zone of Truth, and both Laerryn and Loquatius resisted its effects; in the following conversation, Patia restored the paladin's memory of his attempts to resurrect his husband, Evandrin Alterra, raising the possibility that he had not died. Loquatius tried to stop her, but Laerryn confessed that Evandrin had aided her in her experiment, suggesting that something in the Arboreal Calix caused the illness that killed him. The group went to the Calix and the Tree of Names, and in its branches, Loquatius detected that the branches had trapped the toy that his ex-wife sent to check if her invention worked. She, deducing that the tree prevented her invention from working, tried to cast Blight on it, but Nydas stopped her, warning her about the prophecy that gave the Tree of Names great importance; however, Laerryn glimpsed Evandrin's face in the tree, and the Ring of Brass begins to fight each other. Loquatius tried to magically intimidate Nydas into letting go of Laerryn, but it didn't work, and he cast Hold Person on the changeling and the elf. Patia, ignoring the fight, approached the Tree of Names and cast Legend Lore, trying to find out its nature, and was immediately overwhelmed by the amount of information that invaded her mind. Loquatius managed to free himself and went to pull Patia away from the tree, but was himself trapped by its influence, having a vision of Lady Elmenore, who, surprised, warned him of the approaching danger. Laerryn saw two branches of the tree attack her ex-husband and their friend, cast Blight successfully this time. In the time it took for the tree to be destroyed, Patia received the information about its function and importance, but it was too late: the Tree of Names was destroyed, and from its remains a flaming portal emerged in which were Vespin Chloras (now a K'nauth) and Asmodeus.

"Fire and Ruin" (E3x04)[]

The energy of the tree's destruction hit Loquatius and Patia despite Laerryn's attempt to shield the changeling with her Arcane Ward, and a shock wave knocked Nydas and the Herald of Avalir unconscious and killed the Keeper of Scrolls. While Asmodeus, taking advantage of a Time Stop, interacted with Zerxus, Laerryn, the only one left conscious, managed to escape with Dimension Door, and transmitted the information to Cerrit, the only member of the Ring of Brass absent; she was aware of the moment when Loquatius, terribly weakened by his injuries, died. After nearly dying himself and Asmodeus leaving for Ghor Dranas, Zerxus, now scarred by his pact with the Lord of the Hells but still master of his own actions, revived Loquatius and with the piece of raw ether that the changeling then gave him, also revived Patia.

Loquatius's final broadcast - Horichalcum

The Ring of Brass met again, and after going to the Hall of Prophecies to hear the oracle locked there who they now knew wasn't mad but predicting real danger, they established a plan to be carried out that same night: use Laerryn's Astral Leywright to send the elementals sealed under Cathmoíra to another plane, thus preventing them from joining the Betrayer Gods and saving Exandria. Loquatius decided that he had to inform the inhabitants of both cities of what was happening (since devils have taken the streets and could go to the mainland easily), and left with Nydas on the back of Sha'korzhan to go to the Herald's Tome, but not before kissing Laerryn. Back at his workplace, Loquatius prepared to deliver his message, but was interrupted when golden leaves created a portal to the Feywild where Lady Elmenore was trying to bring all of her Seelie subjects home. The changeling initially appeared to accept this out but immediately afterward casts Gift of Gab, retracting his words, and confessed to his mistress that, although he loved her, he loved Laerryn more; the archfey respected his decision, and closed the portal. The Herald of Avalir made the final preparations with the help of Aria, his assistant, but Loras appeared instructing him to ask the people to stop the evacuation and pour all their magic into the Etheric Net to save the city. Loquatius played along, only to lock him up later with a Wall of Force. In his message to Avalir and Cathmoíra, the changeling explained that both populations were in danger and that the Replenishment would not take place, but asked the people to remain hopeful; transformed into Eldamir the Wise, he instructed the political leaders to stay in the City of Crowns until the end, while urging the rest of the people to use all necessary resources to get to safety, including magical ships. At the end, Loquatius said goodbye to Aria, and before leaving, left his pin with the Herald symbol on the desk of Elena Tuvaris, the reporter he fired to hide the details of Evandrin Alterra's death.

The Ring of Brass rejoined and prepared to put Laerryn's plan in motion with the Astral Leywright, but were followed by Vespin Chloras and various sabotaged taxmen, and a battle ensued. As Laerryn, with Patia's assistance, put her plan into motion, their friends defended them; Loquatius, in mid-combat, proposed to Laerryn with a raven feather, and she accepted and ate the feather. The battle continued and one by one the members of the Ring of Brass fell; during it, the changeling held a Healing Word. Seconds from finishing her job, Laerryn took a hit that would have knocked her unconscious, but her fiancé's healing magic prevented that from happening.

The Astral Leywright activated and sent the Emperor of Fire and the Empress of Earth through the Planes of Existence, destroying both titans, but also annihilating the continent of Domunas in the process. Of the Ring of Brass only Loquatius, Laerryn and Cerrit remained; the first two held onto each other, and when the eisfuura made one last attempt to escape to return to his family, his friends helped him out with Laerryn's instructions and Loquatius' magical talisman. Cerrit managed to get out of Avalir in time. In their final moments, the Coramar-Seelie couple exchanged vows of love.

Relationships[]

Loquatius and Laerryn - ofteasandherbs

Fan art of Loquatius and Laerryn, at the end, by Ofteasandherbs.[art 5]

Loquatius married Laerryn Coramar while Avalir was docked for a Replenishment, seven years before the events of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity. Their marriage had dissolved in the meantime. Although they each displayed hostility toward the other and Laerryn took several jabs at Loquatius's alleged infidelities, there was also clearly affection remaining.[9]

Throughout that final evening of Avalir's existence, the two grew closer. Loquatius gave up his chance to escape the coming destruction via a gate to the Feywild offered by Lady Elmenore to all fey of the Seelie Court on Exandria, telling her that though he loved her, he loved another more. He fought to protect Laerryn as she worked to complete the Astral Leywright in time to shift the captive Primordials out of this plane so that they could not aid the Betrayer Gods. Midway through the battle Loquatius got on one knee and proposed to her, and she accepted his offer and his raven's feather in token of it.

Loquatius's Healing Word brought her from unconsciousness at the very last moment. Her work completed, Laerryn and Loquatius held each other, and, with the stained glass windows around them resembling a church, pledged their love to one another as the cataclysm took the city.

Loquatius and Laerryn - Karrah E

Fan art of Loquatius and Laerryn, by KarrahE.[art 7]

  • Loquatius: (to Laerryn) Aria is just my assistant.
    Laerryn: Mm. Mm-hmm.
Loquatius: She's a fantastic assistant. She came highly recommended.
    Laerryn: I'm sure she did.
Loquatius: She happens to be young. She happens to be attractive, but that goes with the territory. It has nothing to do with anything else.
Laerryn: Of course it doesn't. Of course it doesn't. You have my unadulterated attention right now.
Loquatius: Well, that would make the first time that's ever happened.[31]
  • Loquatius: (to Laerryn) Before you go, I don't want to leave it like this, all right? I just was struck with the memory that the last time we landed the cities, you know, that's when we got married.
    Laerryn: I remember.
Loquatius: So. I don't know, we were okay once, and maybe we can be again. Just for a moment, just for the month that we're docked and then you can go back to hating me.
Laerryn: I don't-- I don't hate you. And I will be on my best behavior.
    Loquatius: I will, too.[32]
  • Laerryn: This is my choice. History will remember me.
    Loquatius: History is not true![33]
  • Loquatius: (to Laerryn) I've been able to become anyone I want my whole life, but I just want to be with you.
Laerryn: I can't believe that the thing I almost broke beyond fixing was us.[34]

Trivia[]

  • His name derives from loquax, which means "talkative" in Latin and describes a trait about Loquatius' character. His surname derives from sællic, which means "happy" or "prosperous", and is a reference to his fey nature.
    • It is confirmed that Loquatius was part of the Seelie Court in the Feywild, even knowing Lady Elmenore and her domain.[35]
    • Originally his surname was supposed to be Hambrick-Zucker, but Sam changed his mind, since he wanted something more fey.[36]
  • Sam insinuated that he drew on the Critical Role Wiki to decide Quay's warlock patron.[37]
  • In his Instagram stories Sam said that Loquatius was his first multiclass.[38] While technically Veth Brenatto has that honor (since she took a level in Wizard at the very end of Campaign Two), Loquatius is the first multiclass character Sam has the opportunity to play for an extended period of time.
Loquatius and Laerryn at the end - Laura Mackenzie

  • So far, Loquatius and Laerryn are the only pair of player characters who start their adventure as a divorced couple.
    • According to Aabria, it was Sam's idea that their characters were ex-spouses.[39]
    • In an interview, Sam stated, "When the cast was talking about Calamity, I tossed out the idea that I've always wanted to play a character whose ex-spouse was in the same adventuring party. And to my delight, Aabria instantly shouted, 'I want to be her!' Exploring a divorced couple relationship isn't something you get to see a lot of in fantasy, and I'm excited to see what we can squeeze out of it".[40]
  • During his wedding with Laerryn it started to rain (a rare event for the people of Avalir to experience, since their city usually flies above any precipitation), and although some spellcasters offered to clear the clouds, the couple thought the rain made the event even more magical, so the bride asked them to let it be.[41]
  • According to Aabria, Laerryn made Quay shapeshift to look like their common friends during romantic couple moments.[42]
  • As a herald, Loquatius is given to alliteration, rhyming, and puns.[43]
  • Loquatius is the third Critical Role player character to have a creature type other than humanoid, being preceded by Fearne Calloway, the faun played by Ashley Johnson in Exandria Unlimited and Campaign Three; and Buddy, the ogre played by Liam O'Brien in "The Adventures of the Darrington Brigade" (Sx49).
  • In "Broken Roads" (3x92) Aabria (who played Laerryn in Exandria Unlimited: Calamity) had a pin of Loquatius (her character's husband) on her shirt.
  • After it was confirmed that Bolo was a silver dragon, some members of the cast joked about the possibility of her and Quay having an intimate relationship before the fall of Avalir (thus following the D&D trope/joke of the bard that somehow seduced a dragon) and Bolo eventually producing an egg that hatched into a half-fey half-dragon creature.[45]
