Lodestone[1] is formed from the natural waste of krakens.[2][3]
Properties[]
Lodestone is a rare type of magical and magnetic rock[4] used by the Water Ashari to prevent Vesrah from sinking,[5] and also to contain the size of the rifts between Exandria and the Elemental Plane of Water.[6] The lodestones are kept in the Aerie in Vesrah and their power wanes over time.[7]
The lodestones utilized in Vesrah, usually retrieved by local waverunners, were about eight inches in diameter,[8] and were a deep emerald green that resembled jade. There were slight variations in color and shape, ranging from spherical to slightly oblong, in whatever shape the raw material eventually hardened into.[9]
History[]
As part of Keyleth's final test for her Aramenté, Vox Machina had to retrieve three lodestones from the kraken blocking the rift between the Elemental Plane of Water, Vesrah, and Exandria. While the party tried to do so stealthily, their mission resulted in a battle with the kraken. Keyleth's mother, Vilya, had failed during this same mission as part of her own Aramenté,[10] and all that was found of her body was a leg.[11]
Trivia[]
- This type of lodestone is only mentioned in the episodes happening in Vesrah; further references to lodestone are likely to be referring to the more common type of lodestone, which is mostly known for its magnetic properties. Such stone is used as a component in transmutation spells such as Mending[12], Reverse Gravity[13] and Disintegrate.[14]
- Cobalt golems are fueled by a central lodestone,[15] but it is not clear whether it is the variety created by krakens, or the more common component. However, given their use as a power source, it seems far more likely to be the kraken-produced version.
- The Heaven Falls on Rumblecusp[16] and the Cauldron Sea[17] are places where Exandria and the Elemental Plane of Water rifts merge, although it seems there aren't any lodestones there; hence the chaotic nature of their terrain.
- Lodestone's etymology indicates that it is formed with Old English lād meaning "a way or path; a road". A dialectical sense of "lode" was used in the sense of "watercourse".
