A light devourer, found only in the Netherdeep, is an aberration resembling a spiny anglerfish that can absorb bright light to be used against its prey.
Abilities[]
The following is all taken from Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep, p. 200:
- Skills: Perception, Stealth (expertise)
- Damage immunity: Radiant
- Light Absorption: When the light devourer is exposed to radiant damage or spends any part of its turn in an area of bright light, it begins to glow, radiating dim light in a 10-foot radius for 1 hour
- Actions
- Bite: Deals radiant damage if the devourer is radiating light, otherwise piercing damage
- Multiattack: Two bite attacks
- Radiant Discharge: As a bonus action, if the devourer is radiating light, it can release its stored light in a 20-foot radius around itself, dealing radiant damage. It then ceases to radiate light until the Light Absorption ability is activated again.
Behavior[]
A light devourer is a powerful ambush hunter with merely beast-level intelligence. It searches for prey while hiding in the ocean darkness; one lurked in the dark water 50 feet above the dimly red-lit thermal vents of the Netherdeep, and two others acting as sentries swam in the dark 30 feet above another dimly red-lit chamber at the entrance to the Netherdeep. The creature can absorb both natural and magical sources of light, store the energy in its teeth and its back spines, and then use that energy to burn its prey. Creatures that emit light are thus promising as meals.[1]
