Letherna is a location in the Shadowfell. It is the home of the Matron of Ravens.
Description[]
The realm of Letherna is located in a frigid corner of the Plane of Shadow, and is perpetually frozen. There stands a stronghold made of black ice, from which the Matron of Death pulls the threads of fate.[2]
History[]
During the Age of Arcanum a mortal woman destroyed the first god of death during an apogee solstice[3] and took his place in the pantheon as the Matron of Ravens.[4] After that she moved to the Shadowfell, and Letherna became her personal realm.[5]
Trivia[]
- It is unknown if Letherna was created by the Matron of Ravens or if it belonged to her predecessor.
- The realm itself is frozen, which makes sense as it is part of the winter goddess's domain, though it could also indicate a link to Ethedok the Endless Shadow, the god of darkness and winter during the Founding.[6]
- The Raven Queen described the domain of her predecessor as a "frozen enclave".[7] It is unclear if this is supposed to be a reference to Letherna itself or if the god of death dwelt in a cold climate place in Exandria or another plane.
- Although it isn't confirmed how long did it took the Raven Queen to claim Letherna, it happened before Vecna's first attempt to become a god, since when the archlich still ruled Thar Amphala in the Shadowfell he was aware that the Matron of Death was already ruling from the same plane.[8]
- In 5th Edition the Raven Queen's stronghold is called the Fortress of Memories, and it is filled with trinkets representing memories or strong emotions of the departed.[9] However, this has never been mentioned in Critical Role canon.
