The Lady of Pain is a powerful extraplanar entity, not widely known in Exandria.

Description[]

Appearance[]

An old statue in Pandemonium depicted the Lady of Pain as a female-presenting, robed individual, whose head is surrounded by blades, wreathed like a lion's mane, somewhat reminiscent of a sunflower; some of the blades were arranged to form a crown.[2]

History[]

At some point in the past, in the plane of Pandemonium, some kind of civilization that worked with steel alloy erected, using that same material, a statue of the Lady of Pain about 30 feet tall. However, the people who lived there, as well as their buildings, were attacked and destroyed by a dust titan,[3] and the effigy of the Lady was left at the mercy of the elements.

In 812 PD, Vox Machina found her statue half buried, and somewhat worn away by Pandemonium's constant storm of dust and sand;[4] however, none of the Exandrian heroes were able to determine who the sculpture represented, although one of their companions, Bertrand Bell (who boasted that he had a lot of knowledge about that plane) claimed that the woman was the "Blade Queen".[5]

Later the adventurers found "Bob" (a githzerai who had interacted with them before in Pandemonium, stealing from them) in a citadel where he kept all the things he had taken. The man had become insane after spending so much time in that howling realm, and despite his amnesia and erratic, obsessive behavior, when Pike Trickfoot inquired about the identity of the "Blade Queen" whose statue they had found, the gith corrected her, identifying the entity as the Lady of Pain, and explaining that even in his current state, he hadn't been able to forget who she was.[6]

Trivia[]

  • Even outside of Critical Role canon the Lady of Pain is one of the most mysterious beings in the multiverse, the ruler of Sigil, the City of Doors, in the Outlands,[7] and allegedly one of the few entities able to understand the motivations of the Raven Queen.[8]
    • Despite how powerful she is, she refuses to be worshiped or considered a goddess.[9]
