Kyle is a member of the undead crew on the Crimson Abyss, a ghost ship sailing the seas around the Shattered Teeth. As an NPC, Kyle is played by Matthew Mercer.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Kyle, similarly to the other members of the crew, looks like a skeleton, although somewhat smaller.[1]
Personality[]
Kyle was very sweet and willing to help others, even though his life on the Crimson Abyss was lonely and he wasn't respected.
Biography[]
Background[]
While he was alive he had a drinking problem, and realized that his addiction was a part of his life and had to learn to deal with it and not let it rule him. Even after he was cursed along with the rest of the Crimson Abyss, he still stayed away from any alcohol.[2]
Despite having been on the ship as long as the rest of the skeletons, they often teased him by calling him by other names starting with "K" with even the first mate in on the joke. His main duty was to "clean" the vessel, even though it couldn't get any dirtier or cleaner.[3]
"Phantasmal Parley" (3x72)[]
In 843 PD, when Bells Hells struck a deal with Captain Urlu Novos and joined him on board, Woedders introduced the adventurers to the crew, and told them that Kyle was called "Keith", which annoyed the other skeleton. Later, Kyle was seen sleeping below deck, his physical form reduced to a pile of bones.
"Kindling the Spirits" (3x73)[]
Kyle interacted with Bells Hells sharing with Laudna his experience dealing with addiction (after listening to her commenting about Delilah Briarwood's influence), and answering to their question about the captain and his word. Since he had been helpful, the adventurers decided to make him a gift, and Chetney carved a nametag for him, reading "My name's Kyle, you fucks!". When they gave it to him, during the party before leaving the boat, he was very happy.
Relationships[]
Urlu Novos[]
Kyle trusts Novos, and as far as he knows the captain keeps his word.

Trivia[]
- His name comes from the Scottish Gaelic caol, meaning "thin" or "narrow".
- He shares his name with Kyle Woll, another NPC from Drynna, and with Kyle Shire, a producer at Critical Role. The latter seems to be particularly fond of his namesake.See Kyle Shire's tweet.
- While messing with him one of his crewmates made a reference to "the other Kyle", but it is unclear if it was part of the joke or if Kyle has an actual namesake in the vessel.
- Despite being described as short, he is never specified to be the skeleton of a small race, so it is assumed that he was a shorter and/or young humanoid in life.
