Kattigan Vale is a human ranger played by Robbie Daymond in Campaign Four.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Official art of Kattigan Vale, by Loren Hontanilla.[art 2]
Kattigan is in his mid-40's, standing at 6'4" and 220 pounds. He appears to have led a "weathered" life, and although his abilities are beginning to wane with age, he remains muscular and powerful. When first encountered, he wore scavenged but well-cared-for accoutrements of good quality, all of which were purposeful, including a cowl and hood.[3] He also wears a leather bandolier across his chest, filled with different tinctures and herbs.[11] Kattigan smells like clean but wet dog, with just a little bit of man sweat.[12]
Personality[]
Kattigan is a man of the wilds, uncomfortable in a city.[13] He is unnerving to be around because of his unpredictable nature, but his wolf companion Wulferic can have a calming effect on him.[14] Teor described him as "a fierce warrior and a good man."[15] He seemed to have a drinking problem, either chronic or as a response to the trauma of losing his friend, Thjazi.[16][17]
Biography[]
Background[]
Fan art of young Kattigan in battle, by Meghan Pagliaroni.[art 3]
Kattigan lived a hard life in the woods from the beginning.[3] He participated in several battles with Teor Pridesire, Thjazi Fang, and Thimble, but left them following one battle.[18] He spent some time in Pinebrough, an agricultural community.[19]
Campaign Four[]
Overture[]
After Thjazi's execution, Kattigan got drunk. He wanted to join the wake at Halandil Fang's house, but couldn't bring himself to walk in, so he stayed outside. When he saw Azune Nayar and Teor Pridesire leave, he (along with his animal companion Wulferic) followed them as they entered Thjazi's hideout in the search for Thimble. When Kattigan investigated by casting Clue, he realized that Thimble was attacked by seven, killed three, and when their bodies were dragged out they left a few crow's feathers behind, pointing to the involvement of the Crow Keepers, one of the oldest thieves' guilds in Dol-Makjar.[20]
That night, he slept in the woods outside the city and woke in the morning with alcohol-induced hazy memories of the preceding afternoon and evening, no money, and no food. Since the strongest memory he had was of Thimble's sorrow, and he and Wulferic headed into Dol-Makjar and Hal's home in search of her; on his way there he noticed a falcon resting on a monument in the neighborhood of Marud. Climbing in through the window, they quickly ate and then joined Thimble and Occtis to go to a tavern holding the headquarters of the Crow Keepers, the oldest thieves' guild in town, in search of Casimir Gavendale.[21] When they arrived there they ended up fighting the thieves, but the sudden and scary arrival of Vaelus caused most of them to flee, except for a couple of dead criminals and one more, Gavrey, who they kept for interrogation; he told them that Casimir was the one who had betrayed them, stealing from Thimble to get rid of his debts, and that he had left chasing Cyd after the latter, angry at him, stole a title of deed from him and left to the city of Gormalay, in Timmony. When Kattigan heard that he told the others that they would need help in the north, and after he confirmed that he was willing to join them, Thimble called him a good man. When they all returned to Hal's home they found Sir Julien Davinos in the area, and he and Thimble had a brief argument before the knight told him he was looking for Occtis, since House Tachonis was trying to find him first; as he walked away, the young wizard, still Disguised, asked his friends if he should talk to Julien, and Kattigan encouraged him to do it by slapping his ass in that direction, saying there would be danger present one way or the other.
He and Thimble went inside, eventually being joined by Hal and Thaisha (although the latter left to look for Occtis), Azune and Murray (with whom Kat started flirting), and finally Teor, who had been saved by Tyranny and Wicander Halovar after the latter's family tried to get rid of the nama warrior. It ended up being decided that Azune would get horses so that Wicander, Tyranny, Teor, Thimble, and Kattigan (the ones who had made enemies in the city in the last few hours) could leave Dol-Makjar and find Casimir. The ranger teased Azune about having grown up but also supported the idea of him staying to keep investigating; he also warned his friends about nature being strange in Timmony in the last three days. When they were getting the steeds near the Falcon's Rest monument Kattigan also noticed the nest of an actual falcon.[22]
The journey to Gormalay[]

The group pressed on through the rain, with Kattigan helping them find tracks, and when the ranger noticed that Wick and Tyranny's water skins were almost empty, he chuckled and opened for them so that they would be filled with the rain. They reached the Black Heron Inn at a crossroads, as dawn broke and the storm subsided; there they encountered an orc in a hanging cage, whom Thimble recognized as Abalang Howell, an old friend, who had been imprisoned for stealing Filament. They fed him, and after negotiating his discretion regarding having seen them, Thimble freed him from the cage by forcing the lock. After bidding farewell to the orc (who gave them some advice), the party ventured into the Dahapshanee Wood, and upon reaching a stream, Thimble dove into it; when she came out she explained she had found some of Cyd's hair, learning that he was traveling north and that they had a potential safe haven in Hawthorn's Glade. Kattigan was quite sure he hadn't seen any dark nama hair in the forest, but didn't ask further.
After some debate about the safety of Hawthorn's Glade for the entire group, they decided to visit the house Abalang had told them about instead. There they found Ulbid Morn, a gnomish arcanist and criminal who studied the Stormwrack and welcomed them into his home. While they were there, Kattigan took a bath in the river, and he and Teor took turns standing guard while the others rested. At one point the ranger found an old doll, one of their host's daughters' toys, and examined it for a bit; however, when he noticed it was rotting because of age and neglect, he threw it away.[23]

The next morning, before they left, the Soldiers had a chat about their plans (during which Thimble explained Kattigan what was going on with Cyd and Casimir, since he hadn't understood it very well), and then they continued their journey towards Gormalay. Less than an hour after leaving, Tyranny confessed to the others that something had driven her to steal a precious knife that had once belonged to Ulbid's deceased wife. This caused an argument within the group, and Kattigan in particular was livid, and demanded to have the stolen item; they resolved it by sending Wulferic to return the stolen item (which was actually just the ornamental handle with a note describing it as a relic, since Kat secretly kept the blade) and agreeing to keep a watchful eye out should Tyranny's demonic impulse ever return. When they encountered a fey boundary, several faeries appeared to defend it, and a battle ensued. Although violence had already started Thimble tried to avoid the conflict and convince her forest "cousins" that her friends weren't a threat, with Kattigan casting Spare the Dying on Honeysuckle (the pixie Teor had knocked unconscious); Wick summoned divine light that revitalized nature around him, leaving the fey surprised and curious, and thus stopping the fight. Kattigan helped improve their image further by casting Cure Wounds on Honeysuckle, and the local leader, the dryad Hawthorn, started interrogating them, before allowing them into Hawthorn's Glade. In the fey enclave Kat noticed Teor was very pleased with the attention he was getting, so he reminded him that the more time they spent there the longer it would take them to find his brother. The ranger, after aggressively eating some strawberries, checked a note Ulbid had sent with Wulferic, thanking him for returning the handle of the knife, wishing his group to find an use for the blade, and promising Kat he would always be welcome to bathe in his stream. After that he went looking for Thimble, who was visiting the "moon crystal" that kept that community thriving; he arrived in time to hear how Talcydimir had been in the glade before them, but had been sent to the Wraith Tree to die. Hawthorn was enraged for Kattigan to be there without permission, and tied him up with her roots. Although Thimble managed to calm her down, Hawthorn declared that the group had to leave before sunset, before releasing the human. Wanting to find Teor's brother as soon as possible, Thimble and Kat spoke to Sallow the hag (whom the ranger found out of place in Hawthorn's Glade), and she agreed to let them know how to reach the Wraith Tree in exchange for a memory; after Kattigan promised the pixie he would remind her of anything she forgot, she gave up the memory of how she came up with the nickname "Thaz" for Thjazi while learning how to write. Before they left the hag also showed them a vision of Casimir accepting his payment while stating he wanted Thjazi to die.
The Soldiers left Hawthorn's Glade and followed the path that led to the Wraith Tree; there they fought several undead and the wraith that animated them, and during the fight Kattigan wielded both weapons and magic, using his atlatl against the zombies and casting Hunter's Mark on one of them. After Teor defeated the wraith the zombies kept moving, connected to a red rune in the dead tree nearby; Kattigan threw some oil and Thimble used it to set the wood on fire, destroying the rune. The undead were put to rest, but the adventurers also noticed that Cyd wasn't there.[24] The group looted some of the corpses, and after Kat reminded them that there were still dangers in the forest they kept moving; however, they ended up lost, so they spent the night on a tree.
The following morning they finally got out of the forest, arriving to the fief of Vallow. Kattigan told the others that since they had helped with the problem of the Wraith Tree they should try talking to the locals, because they were kind people. However, when they visited the local chapel and started a small teological discussion with the acolyte there, which caused Thimble to leave angrily, the ranger whispered to Wick that they shouldn't complicate the simple beliefs of the people there too much, before following the pixie outside. Both friends talked to a shepherd, Tasker, who was very impressed and thankful to them after he discovered they had gone through the Dahapshanee making it safer. They told him that if in the following days nothing happened, it should be safe to visit the woods again, even if only during the day (Tasker expressed interest in collecting some rubyfold for his wife, but Kat told him he hadn't seen any of it); in turn, the shepherd shared with them some news from the area, including how Cyd had arrived the day before, just to be arrested and brought to the Baron of Sloak. With that new information the group started moving northward (making a brief stop for Wulferic to eat in one of the small dog shrines on the road, a suggestion from Wick that Kattigan appreciated), stopping at Arderin, where Teor, with some assistance (which included Kat's Guidance), convinced an old woman to take them with her on her cart.

When they were finally in Gormalay they decided to spend the night on the cart before continuing their journey to Sloak on foot; however, during the night Thimble woke Kattigan up, worried about a big mastiff with shining eyes, since it might be a threat to Wulferic. When that dog suddenly disappeared, the two adventurers started looking for it, and Kat cast Clue, noticing that its tracks led to a local tavern. They went inside and asked some questions to Gwen, the woman who came to welcome them, and who told them that the dog they had seen was one of the king's hounds that patrolled the area. When Gwen was busy preparing some stew for them, Thimble convinced Kattigan to interrogate a smaller, bluish dog sleeping by the fire of the tavern while she investigated upstairs; the ranger reluctantly agreed, but when he was preparing to cast Speak with Animals, the animal woke up and addressed him in fluent Orcish. When Thimble returned, after having spoken with them about the reason of their visit, the dog, who had introduced herself as Dame Morgaine, instructed Gwen to wash the visitors' bowls after they were done with them (so there would be no evidence of them having been there); she also asked them if they had anything from Talcydimir for her to track (they didn't), and carefully inquired about the terrible reputation of Casimir, who was going to become the new Baron of Sloak. As they were leaving, the talking dog also told them that the mastiff they had seen, Hawkins, deserved the chance of a conversation in case they saw him again, even if their first instinct was to fight. Kat had asked Teor for some coin to pay for the stew, but when they finally left with it, he threw it away, telling Thimble that even if Morgaine was nice, he didn't fully trust her. With the new information they had (including the fact that Tachonis men were sleeping in the tavern at the moment), they continued traveling until they reached Sloak, a place that looked so bad Kattigan openly expressed how sad it was that Casimir sold his sold for it. Knowing that the forces of House Tachonis were coming too they sent Wulferic, and the wolf returned after a bit confirming that one of their targets was in the area; it turned out that Casimir was already in his new and ruinous castle. After the traitor had a meeting with his allies from the Sundered Houses (being humiliated by them) the Soldiers saw them go and debated what to do next, since they still didn't know where Cyd was. They agreed to deal with Casimir first, using Tyranny and Wick as a distraction to get inside the castle.[25]
Thimble, who had been scouting inside, informed Kattigan and Teor about the situation inside the castle, and the ranger, wanting to create a distraction, cast Fog Cloud and sent Wulferic (without his armor, so he would look more like a normal wolf) to scare away a horse and a mule, causing some of the guards to chase them. Shortly after they heard Wick calling for help, a battle ensued: Kattigan immediately faced a rogue in full armor and he threw him down the wall, breaking his neck; seconds later he used his atlatl and the Hail of Thorns spell to kill another enemy. When Thimble rose in the air, victorious after killing Casimir, Teor told the guards that he didn't have anything against them or their king, only the crows amongst them, and avoided harming Sir Cosgrove, one of the knights; Kat, however, was already preparing to act, so he threw himself on top of that warrior to immobilize him anyway, letting him go only when the battle was officially over (after slapping his ass). The Soldiers talked to the surviving garrison of Castle Sloak, and although some felt guilty about failing their new baron, and while they were doing so Wulferic returned, followed, after a bit, by Dame Winifred Cosgrove. When they spoke with her they realized that there was concern about the fate of Sloak if it didn't have a baron of its own protecting it, so Kat and Teor encouraged Wick to claim the title. After a bit, however, that position ended up changing again, since Kattigan noticed that Dame Cosgrove (of honest family, born in Sloak, and worried about its well-being) was better suited to take care of the barony, so he took Wicander aside and told him that it would be good to name her the new baroness. After sharing some information they all went to the public house of the village, where they found Dame Morgaine; they were told that there were actually two Tachonis caravans, and that Cyd was likely being kept with one of them, traveling north.[26]
Relationships[]
Wulferic[]
Fan art of Kattigan and Wulferic, by Savs Creates.[art 7]
Wulferic is Kattigan's animal companion. Their bond is survival and companionship, and they are extremely close, with Kattigan regarding Wulferic as a partner.[27] The connection between them is a powerful and potent magic, as is Wulferic himself.[28] Kattigan named the wolf "Wulferic" because of its similarity to "wolf", and as Kattigan claims "I'm not good at naming things".[29] When Wulferic lost his paw while under Kat's care, they "scavenged" the magical means to create an ethereal prosthetic for the wolf.[30]
Wulferic does not seem interested in speaking with others when the spell "Speak with Animals" is cast, not out of disrespect, but preferring to "keep the counsel of his constant companion."[31]
When Kat assured he was a very sought-after bounty hunter, Wulferic sneezed,[32] and while that was unrelated, the wolf does know when the ranger isn't being honest.[33]

Behind the scenes[]
Robbie Daymond was inspired by Liam O'Brien after he told him he had had the idea for Orym for years, so he started thinking about Kattigan during his time in hiatus during Campaign Three, developing the concept of the character for about a year and a half, and latter writing 15 pages about Kat's past as a story for Brennan to use as much as he wanted as Campaign Four was being prepared; latter he wrote another story (this time 8 pages) to create the past connections of the ranger with Teor, Thimble, and Azune, after talking with their players about it.[53]
Robbie's daughter helped him roll Kattigan’s stats.[54] Robbie later admitted to using the wrong method.[55] He and his daughter used the standard rolling method of 4d6, dropping the lowest, for his character.[56] However, the custom method used for character stats in Campaign Four was to roll 5d6 and drop the two lowest.[57]
When talking about Kattigan, Robbie said he wanted to play something different than a support like Dorian Storm: a martial and tactical character that would make rangers feel cool (even if some people considered them "shitty").[58]

Trivia[]
- Robbie has confirmed that Kattigan has a drinking problem that isn't limited to him dealing with Thjazi's death. Moreover, one of the reason why he is "out of sorts" in a city is because he can access alcohol more easily there.[60]
- Matthew Mercer compared Kattigan to a mix of Aragorn from "The Lord of the Rings" and Eddie Valiant from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?".[61]
- Kattigan's magical abilities are limited and gained through much effort, causing him to struggle to cast even the most basic spells.[62]
