Karem Ferentus is a blood hunter and a member of the Claret Orders, as well as a mentor figure for Lucien Tavelle and his friends.[1]

Description[]

Appearance[]

From the perspective of the 19 year old Lucien Karem was an older man, with deep-brown skin[2] and amber eyes. He is missing his left arm from the elbow down.[3]

Personality[]

Karem is a kind and pacient man who seems to be unbothered by everything and usually smiles. He is welcoming and kind to those who become his students, and tries to motivate them and take an interest in what worries them, although sometimes he tends to repeat himself in his lessons or in the stories he tells them; he seems to believe his own teachings on the Claret Orders at heart. He missed his youth.[4]

Biography[]

Karem joined the Claret Orders at some point in his life, becoming a blood hunter of the Order of the Ghostslayer. In one of his missions he lost part of his left arm during an encounter with a ghoul.[5] He eventually became an important mentor figure in the Claret Orders, training younger members in the Oltu Ruins. He had contacts in Rexxentrum.[6]

He had Brevyn Oakbender as his apprentice for a summer in the Marrow Valley,[7] and in 822 PD she had acquired knowledge of hemocraft thanks to him. The half-goliath used her contact years later, and in 827 PD (or soon before)[8] two friends of her, Lucien Tavelle and Cree Deeproots, became Karem's students. While he acted as a father figure for them, Lucien was reluctant to open up to his mentor, assuming that the blood hunter would disappoint him like others before him; despite everything, Karem maintained a good treatment towards his student.[9]

By 829 PD he had delivered and personally supervised Lucien's first contract, investigating undead activity in the Silberquel foothills with Cree and Brevyn, and at the tiefling's insistence, he assigned Cree her own first contract that same year,[10] sending Lucien and Sarenne de Chastain with her (as Brevyn was needed in the Oltu Ruins). Since the mission was to kill the witch Azrahari (with whom Lucien shared a traumatic past) Lucien was convinced that Karem, Sarenne and Elias de Corvo were testing him.[11]

After that mission Karem remained a watchful figure in the professional lives of his students,[12] and when Lucien, Cree, and Brevyn traveled to Rexxentrum in 831 PD they were careful to move in places where Karem might have contacts that could compromise the independence of the young members of the Claret Orders.[13]
