The Kaltenloch is one of two large lakes in the Zemni Fields, the other being the Erdeloch. It flows into the Frigid Depths, and is adjacent to Icehaven, the only port in Western Wynandir.[1]

Description[]

Due to the harsh winters in the region, the Kaltenloch is frozen for three or four months of the year. Still, it has fish year-round, and many inhabitants of Icehaven fish there for a living. Where ice is present, a low mist also appears, said to be made up of the spirits of soldiers who perished during the Calamity, now seeking to steal warmth from living creatures.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Kalten means "cold" in German, so Kaltenloch likely means "cold lake".
  • This lake allegedly full of spirits is similar to the frozen lake the Mighty Nein crossed to reach the Cinderrest Sanctum; in said body of water ghosts also started to appear in the mist, but instead of attacking or stealing the warmth of the adventurers, they followed them while listening to Jester Lavorre, who was reading Tusk Love aloud.[3]
