The Judicators are the traditional guardians, engineered distributors of justice, and "holy hunters",[1] for the high temples of Vasselheim.
Description[]
The Judicators have been described as the "divine warriors of the faithful."[2] They volunteer themselves for a "rigorous and transformative series of challenging rituals and secret divine blessings", giving up their own individuality to become weapons for the Prime Deities. Through these rituals, they become the "exalted soldiers and bloodhounds" for the gods. Outside of times of war, Judicators primarily act as bodyguards to the high clerics, protectors of the most holy of relics, and sometimes wardens in the deepest of Vasselheim's prisons. They are rarely seen in public,[3] and rarely, if ever, speak.[4]
Judicators come from several races, but the ones seen to date are uniformly about seven feet tall, with muscles unnaturally enhanced by magic.[5] They wear hooded elaborate long loose sleeveless vestments adorned with strips of gold-embossed material emblazoned with symbols and a set of abjuration-based glyph-carved platinum bracers.[6] Metallic handguards wrap around their knuckles just below the bracers.[7] They wear no other armor, but their arms are covered in religious runic tattoos.[8] The runes, Draconic in nature, are divine and protective, giving them resistance to magical attacks.[9]
Their faces are covered in a bronze or iron mask bearing scrolling fine script of ancient religious text and runic symbols but without eyeholes or features.[10] These masks are fused to the face of the Judicator, rather than being worn, and cannot be easily removed.[11]
History[]
The order of the Judicators originated during the early wars of The Calamity.[12]
There were two Judicators present in Yios when Bells Hells arrived there for the first time. They had been there for about a week,[13] accompanying an emissary from the high temples of Vasselheim.[14]
The day of the apogee solstice Bells Hells infiltrated the Tishtan excavation site. There, they found the iron mask of a Judicator exposed as a trophy;[15] later, in a pile of corpses, they also saw the body of a Judicator whose mask had been removed in a way that exposed the skull beneath the face.[16] The partially-autopsied body of a Judicator was also found by the infiltration and rescue team half of Bells Hells in the biological arcane laboratory within the Prime Pillar of Kreviris, its face mutilated.[17]
As part of the efforts to convert the "pagans" who lived in Hearthdell and ensure their security Vasselheim sent two Judicators to the village, but during the apogee solstice itself the townsfolk felt extremely uncomfortable and unsafe due to the presence of those masked warriors.[18]
When Imogen Temult, Laudna, Orym and Chetney Pock O'Pea were on a mission to rescue a bormodo scientist in the Prime Pillar of Vaterra Kreviris, in Ruidus, they found an arcane laboratory with several experiments going on, including the autopsy of a judicator.[19]
At least two judicators were present in Vasselheim during the strategy meeting of the Exandrian Accord there following the fall of their fortress around the base of the Malleus Key, guarding the stairs leading to the Platinum Sanctuary where the meeting was being held.[20]
Known members[]
The Judicator encountered by Bells Hells in the Aydinlan Seminary in Yios had arrived with a representative from Vasselheim. Its presence was extremely intimidating, with both the students and the regular guards falling back at its approach.[21] Judicators usually travel in pairs,[22] and the second one present in Yios at that time appeared to be a half-giant.[23]
One of the Judicators sent to Hearthdell stayed in the Sunrise Sanctuary.[24] Its muscles were swollen and unnaturally enhanced by magic.[25]
Abilities[]
The Judicator encountered by Team Issylra of Bells Hells had the following abilities:
- Class: Paladin[26]
- Power Strike: Three attacks doing force and bludgeoning damage[27]
- Condemnation: A divine magic enchantment. After hitting a target with all three power strikes, on a failed Constitution save the target is blown back 10 feet and paralyzed until the end of the user's next turn.[28] This ability can recharge on a successful dice roll at the end of the Judicator's turn.[29]
- Size: Large
- Magic Resistance: Has advantage on saving throws against spells.[30]
- Armor Class: 19[31]
- Hit Points: Between 231 and 261
- Spells:
- Branding Smite[32]
