Johanna von Musel de Rolo was the lady of Whitestone, the wife of Lord Frederick de Rolo and the mother of his seven children, including Percival de Rolo and Cassandra de Rolo.

In The Legend of Vox Machina, Johanna is voiced by Grey Griffin.

Biography[]

Lady Johanna was born as a member of the von Musel family, a noble house with strong connections with the de Rolo family that ruled Whitestone. In her youth she received martial training to some extent, though over the years she abandoned it.[4]

At some point she married Frederick de Rolo, becoming the Lady of Whitestone. Together they had seven children: Julius, Vesper, Percy, Whitney, Ludwig, Oliver and Cassandra. When the third one was born several distant relatives of the couple demanded to be honored and recognized, so Lord and Lady de Rolo appeased them by naming the boy Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III. In a similar way, the youngest child was named Cassandra Johanna von Musel Klossowski de Rolo.[5]

Around 805 PD the de Rolos had two guests from Wildemount in Whitestone Castle: Delilah and Sylas Briarwood. The guests, however, betrayed their hosts, murdering almost the entire family (only Percy and Cassandra survived) with the help of allies whom they would later reward.[6][7][8][9] She was tortured with burning irons before they killed her,[10][11] and her body was left hanging on the Sun Tree with the rest of the victims.[12]

Even after the Briarwoods were defeated and Percy and Cassandra started rebuilding and restoring their family seat, the bodies of Johanna, Frederick and their five murdered children were not recovered, so they aren't resting in the Greyfield with the rest of their ancestors.[13]

Trivia[]

  • Her name is the feminine form of Johannes, which comes from Yehochanan, which means "God is gracious/merciful" in Hebrew.
    • Her youngest daughter, Cassandra Johanna, bears her name.
    • Interestingly, her name shares an etymological origin with that of Ivan von Musel, who could be her ancestor.
  • For some time it was believed that Johanna's maiden name was Johanna Klossowski, since at least two of her children beared that surname just before Frederick's, but in The Chronicles of Exandria - The Legend of Vox Machina Volume II it was revealed that her full name was Johanna von Musel de Rolo. However, the very same book states that Klossowski was used to name Percival to placate relatives of his parents,[14] so it is very possible that even if Johanna's surname wasn't Klossowski, she's related to this family.
  • When she stopped training her armor stayed in Whitestone as ornamental until her youngest daughter wore it many years later.[15]
  • It is possible that she marrying Frederick allowed the de Rolos to claim the Third House of Whitestone for themselves,[16] in case it still belonged to her family by then.
    • While the exact genealogical connection between them isn't defined, it is possible that Johanna and Frederick were distantly related, with their marriage being the second between their two families.[17]
