Jamedi Cosko was an employee of Captain Avantika and an accomplished explorer and dungeoneer. As an NPC, Jamedi Cosko is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Jamedi appears to be a human man with a completely smooth, bald head with gaunt features and very dark brown skin. He wears a heavy leather coat with a few belts attached to it. He carries a satchel on his side along with a few blades[3] and a shortbow.[4]

Personality[]

Jamedi has a dry sense of humor and prefers to work alone. He is very experienced in his line of work and has survived many dangerous encounters, even losing friends in the process. Jamedi is deadpan, professional and capable with his shortbow, but shows an attitude of aversion to combat, when possible preferring to remain stealthy and hidden. When caught up in an encounter with a Hydra he panics, succumbs to fear and refuses to aid Captain Avantika and the Mighty Nein in fighting the beast.[5]

Biography[]

Background[]

Jamedi is a Hollow One, a person who has died but whose soul was bound back to their original body through the mysterious magic of Blightshore.[6] Prior to meeting the Mighty Nein, Jamedi was the sole survivor of "the escaping singular mines" (or "minds") located somewhere in the north of Wildemount.[7] He also worked for Captain Avantika once before.[8] Though the exact nature of his previous job is unknown, it was probably similar to his second contract with Avantika where he acted as a scout/guide. Beyond these two events Jamedi has worked solo as a hired adventurer for other unnamed groups[9], having reportedly lost many friends over the course of his work.[10]

"Dangerous Liaisons" (2x37)[]

When the Mighty Nein arrived and stayed near the Squalleater, Jamedi was still on his mission. Two days later, he returned, and Avantika introduced him to the Nein, informing them that Jamedi will escort her and the party to the temple. Jamedi also told them about lizardfolk patrols on the island's outskirts and the location of the temple.

"Welcome to the Jungle" (2x38)[]

In the course of their journey, Caduceus Clay used Eyes of the Grave feature detecting Jamedi as an undead. Healing their wounds with a nighttime sleep following the fight with kamadans, Jamedi and Jester Lavorre shared a watch. Jester pestered Jamedi for information about himself, learning that he was the sole survivor of a mining accident and that this was his second voyage with Avantika. Jester shared her passion for the Traveler and about a bug carrying a piece of bread five times its size up a staircase.

When Nott the Brave asked Avantika if she knew about Jamedi's death aura, Avantika told her she didn't know and she wasn't worried, proving himself trustworthy during their previous collaborative work.

"Temple of the False Serpent" (2x39)[]

To investigate further Jamedi's undead nature, Nott approached him offering a sip from her flask, which Jamedi turned down saying he was sober, but instead accepted a piece of jerky, which, as it seemed, he chewed and swallowed. Nott also casually attempted to learn if Jamadi was the follower of Zehir, but he said he didn't. Jamedi accompanied the group into the Temple of the False Serpent, holding a torch to lighten up the space, which Jamedi eventually threw into the Warden's chamber to illuminate the Nein's battle and backed up.

Throughout the hydra battle, Jamedi kept his distance and was scared to engage with the enemy, saying he wasn't hired to do that work.

"Dubious Pursuits" (2x40)[]

Jamedi still remained with the party only to get his payment for guiding them to the temple. When the temple was flooded and the party started to make their rapid escape toward Squalleater, Jamedi lead them through the safest passage, avoiding all the traps set by lizardfolk and Yuan-ti. Back on the ship, he receive payment for his troubles, stored in a small chest and added this was their last time working together.

"A Pirate's Life for Me" (2x41)[]

As the ship has docked in Darktow Isle, Jamedi claimed that Avantika payed him less then was in their contract and demanded 50 more gold pieces, which she immediately gave him. Jamedi said goodbyes and walked into the city.

"In Hot Water" (2x43)[]

During Beauregard Lionett's audience with Plank King Wyatt Maranoss, Jamedi was revealed to be the Plank King's informer, sharing what he knew of Avantika.

Relationships[]

Captain Avantika[]

Captain Avantika is Jamedi's former employer having hired him to seek out a temple to Uk'otoa located on Urukayxl. Jamedi's relationship with Captain Avantika was professional and serious much like most others he interacts with. When asked by Jester if he likes Captain Avantika he responds, "She pays well and doesn't judge."

Jester Lavorre[]

Jamedi describes Jester as "strange... and creepy" whilst taking watch with her after an attack by two Kamadan on the group.[11]

Trivia[]

  • Out of character, the players jokingly refer to Jamedi as "Jumanji Costco".
  • When within the range of the grave cleric's "Eyes of the Grave" class feature, Jamedi emits a faint undead aura. When asked about it at a convention, Matt Mercer said that if Jamedi did not return later in the story, he would reveal the source of the undead aura. Later, during "Explorer's Guide to Wildemount Q&A and Fireside Chat with Matthew Mercer" (Sx53), Matt confirmed that Jamedi is a Hollow One, causing the aura.[14]
