Irvan Wastewalker[3] is a human and member of the rival adventuring party in Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep, set around 836 PD.
Description[]
Appearance[]

Depiction of Irvan, with a facial scar, arcane prosthetic arm, and a ruidium-infused shortsword, by Nikki Dawes.[art 2]
Irvan is described as having a youthful, adolescent appearance, with a patchy beard and unruly light brown hair that contribute to a scruffy look. He has what he considers a scrawny body, though that is in comparison to his previous life as a bugbear. He has a valuable silver ring with a small sapphire, and he is initially depicted with pauldrons and a hood. He is shown with fair skin and gray eyes.[4]
During his adventures in Cael Morrow, he loses an arm, which his allied faction replaces with a stylish arcane prosthetic limb,[5] and he acquires a long facial scar beneath his left eye.[6]
Personality[]
Irvan is described as a scoundrel[7] with a reputation as a party animal, having a penchant for heavy drinking and dancing. He is secretly ashamed of the ways his facial hair and physique compare to his previous bugbear body. Though he chafes at the Wastewalker name, he also keeps his previous noble station as a member of Den Hythenos a secret and hopes to prove himself without relying on their backing, and hopes to fall in love with someone who doesn't know about that family connection. He also seeks new experiences and has a goal to seem mature despite his apparent age.[8] In Jigow he is initially friendly unless teased about his appearance, and carries a cavalier demeanor.[9]
After losing his arm to a slithering bloodfin in Cael Morrow, he becomes more wary and brusque, worried that—so far from a Luxon beacon—his next mistake could be his last.[10]
Biography[]
Background[]
In a past life Irvan was a bugbear and part of the noble Den Hythenos of the Kryn Dynasty. Irvan was reborn into the Wastewalker clan around 817 PD in the wastes of Xhorhas, but as a teenager he struck out on his own for the rough-and-tumble city of Asarius, which felt much more like home.[1] As of around 836 PD, when the adventure begins, he has recently traveled to Jigow to participate in contests of skill and brawn, and there he joined the growing adventuring party led by Ayo Jabe, with her longtime friend Dermot Wurder and the mercenary Maggie Keeneyes; after Irvan, wizard Galsariad Ardyth rounded out the group. At the time the adventure begins, the party has been doing odd jobs around Jigow for a few weeks, and Irvan sticks with them partly because he's interested in what they'll do next and partly because of a slight crush on Galsariad.[11]
Call of the Netherdeep[]
When Galsariad is first encountered at Jigow's Festival of Merit, he is not with any other members of his party, and though he scans the crowd for a familiar face, he doesn't readily discuss being part of a team; he may even pair with one of the Player Characters (PCs) as a teammate in one of the festival's challenges.[12] In the final challenge, if he's present when the characters reach the prayer site of Sehanine, he is unsure about being the first to touch the Jewel of Three Prayers.[13]
If the PCs' party claimed the Jewel, and relations between the parties are friendly, he is interested in learning more about the Jewel's capabilities.[14] But if relations are hostile, he is the most likely to try to steal it himself, seeing it more as valuable than as mystical.[15]
Later, on the road to the Bazzoxan, Irvan may lose his very valuable ring after being wounded by a gloomstalker, and he's grateful if the ring is found and returned to him.[16]
Upon arrival in Bazzoxan, his party helps defend against an attack by gibbering mouthers, following Ayo's orders. If the PCs retreat, Ayo may fight to the point of being gravely wounded, which leaves Irvan worried about the party's future.[17] Whether Ayo is wounded or not, the battle with the aberrations is traumatic for the party, and Irvan becomes distant, finding the gallows humor and general atmosphere of Bazzoxan overpowering.[18] When the trauma is compounded by the party's experiences in the Betrayers' Rise, they are further shaken, and Irvan doesn't look forward to traveling to Marquet, into danger outside the range of a Luxon beacon. Only his dedication to his compatriots gets him to overcome his fear.[19]

Joining either the Allegiance of Allsight or the Consortium of the Vermilion Dream in Ank'Harel leads the party to explore Cael Morrow and the Netherdeep, and the experience of losing an arm reinforces Irvan's fear of his mortality and makes him noticeably more cautious and ill-tempered.[20]
When the parties have both entered the Netherdeep, the bitter and tormented Alyxian tries to spoil any friendly relations between Ayo's party and the PCs.[21] If relations are neither friendly nor hostile, Irvan and Galsariad are the least cooperative with the PCs as they approach the final encounter in the Heart of Despair.[22]
Relationships[]
Within weeks of meeting the elegant Galsariad, Irvan has developed something of a crush for him, and this helps to keep Irvan tied to the party.[23]

Like other members of his party, if he personally feels friendly toward any of the PCs despite most of his party feeling otherwise, he may privately maintain contact.[24] Still, he generally follows Ayo's lead,[25] and if she is badly injured in Bazzoxan, he lingers outside the infirmary.[26]
If Irvan's party dies in the Netherdeep, he may appear in the PCs' dreams for weeks to follow. One such dream may involve Irvan wondering if he ever did anything great.[27]
