"Into Rimecleft" (LVM2x06) is the sixth episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, Season Two. Upon arriving at the location of the next Vestige of Divergence, Vox Machina must face the challenges of the mysterious sphinx, Kamaljiori – the mate of Osysa. But even if they can succeed, a new, unexpected threat lies waiting for them.

Plot summary[]

Grog is in an arena, bloodily battling a horde of attackers with the aid of Craven Edge. As they die, their blood is sucked into and absorbed by the sword. As the audience cheers and chants his name, Grog exults, then realizes the sword is piercing a still-living Pike who reaches out to him beseechingly. Behind her lie the bloodied and dead bodies of the rest of Vox Machina. Turning, Grog sees his uncle Kevdak telling him he has made the Herd proud. As Pike screams, Grog wakes, alone on watch, with Craven Edge demanding, "More."

The next morning, the party is traveling through a snowy forest on their way to find the sphinx Osysa's mate. Grog again hears Craven Edge saying "I hunger", and Grog tells the sword he has nothing for him right now. But Craven Edge is insistent and demanding, and Pike notices Grog speaking to it. He denies everything, and when he dashes off, Pike worriedly confers with Scanlan, who blows her concerns off. In frustration, Pike asks why he can't ever just be sincere.

Keyleth asks Vax'ildan if he's getting used to his armor, but he tells her it's hard to get used to a relic of the Goddess of Death. From afar, a creature is watching.

The party comes to a cliffside, seeing Rimecleft, the home of Osysa's mate, in the distance. Vax recognizes it from his vision. The party are all freezing, and a blushing Percy drapes his coat around Vex. A worried Pike tries to ask Grog about his sword, but he evades the question.

The party finds an obelisk-like pillar carved with ancient runes, and with skeletons at its base. Percy translates the runes as saying, "Seekers (or fools), flee this land, for dangers come from paradise." Vex mounts her broom and flies off to scout, finding more pillars scattered about. Through them, she spots a hidden cave entrance, and returns to lead the others there. Although the door is gone when they arrive, she walks through the illusion hiding it and they enter an immense cavern. Vax recognizes it as a pre-Calamity temple.

Suddenly, they hear the voice of Kamaljiori, telling them they were not smart enough to heed his warnings. As he attacks, Vex shouts that they were sent by Osysa. The sphinx arrests his attack, noting that it's been centuries since he heard from his mate. He has the knowledge they seek, but before he will reveal it they must prove their worth in a challenge. They can choose either to conquer the 70 Death Gorgons, survive the Endless Labyrinth of Misery, or wound Kamaljiori. In his eons of life, he has never felt pain, and their challenge is to inflict an injury. They choose that option, and find themselves transported to another dimension, where they can each try to wound him one-on-one.

As Vax goes first, Craven Edge speaks to Grog, saying that if he's not fed, he will feed himself, and withering Grog's right arm to prove it. Kamaljiori recognizes Vax has been touched by the Matron of Ravens, but as Vax throws his daggers they are blocked, and Vax is hit by a beam of light and disappears into the surrounding void. Vex attacks, meeting the same fate, followed by Grog. Keyleth, Pike, and Percy attack in unison with the same result. Hiding behind a boulder, Scanlan hopes he'll be forgotten, but is flung toward the edge of the battleground only narrowly saving himself.

Kamaljiori taunts that he is all jokes and no heart. Scanlan asks Kamaljiori to allow him a moment of utter sincerity, and plays him a song of Osysa's love for Kamaljiori, and loneliness without him. At its end, there is a long silence, and a tear rolls down Kamaljiori's cheek. He tells Scanlan he has succeeded in causing him pain, by wounding his heart. To have such emotional depths, Scanlan must know true love. At first, Scanlan agrees, but then admits he has no one. He wants love, but he just can't seem to get it right. Kamaljiori suggests he stop looking for love, and let it find him.

The rest of Vox Machina stirs, not knowing where they are, and find themselves back in the cavern with Scanlan and Kamaljiori working on a song together. To the party's incredulity, the sphinx tells them that in his millennia of existence, Scanlan is the wisest sage he's ever known. When Scanlan suggests the sphinx will now tell them the locations of the other Vestiges, Kamaljiori corrects him. They will reveal the locations themselves, with a sword that magically appears: the vestige Mythcarver. Scanlan holds it aloft, and sees a vision of a weird sky, pink mountains, and a forest with upside-down waterfalls. Keyleth recognizes the Fey Realm, and Scanlan's vision then reveals a bow within a corrupted tree. His vision shifts to Westruun in flames, filled by the Herd of Storms, one of whom is wearing another vestige, some giant gauntlets.

Suddenly, there are thuds and the cavern shakes. Kamaljiori is afraid they've been followed, and Vex senses dragons just as the roof collapses. In the clearing dust and rubble, they see Umbrasyl perched above them. He chortles, noting "the woman" was right: they have a vestige. Umbrasyl attacks and the sphinx combats him, aided by Vox Machina. Umbrasyl is overwhelmingly powerful but Grog manages to draw blood with Craven Edge by enlarging one of the small wounds inflicted by the sphinx. Eventually, Umbrasyl prevails, knocking out Kamaljiori and seizing Scanlan (still clutching Mythcarver) in his mouth, flying away.

The sphinx stirs in time to fly after him, knocking Scanlan free. As they both plummet, Kamaljiori snatches Scanlan from the air, cradling him as they hit the ground and Mythcarver lands on the mountain above them.

Scanlan is unhurt, but Kamaljiori is fatally wounded. He thanks Scanlan for showing him Osysa once more. Above them, Umbrasyl lands and seizes Mythcarver, but as he tries to land to attack the party, Grog rages and attacks with Craven Edge. As Keyleth frantically tries to open a portal to the Fey Realm, Grog is almost able to hold his own against the dragon, and as Pike desperately tries to get him to join the group he continues to try to return to the fight. As he rushes forward, his sword accidentally pierces through Pike's body. All the rage leaves him as he clutches Pike's limp form, and Scanlan rushes them to join Keyleth and the others. As the dragon attacks, Keyleth casts her spell.

They hurtle through dimensions. Finally, Keyleth, Percy, Vex, and Vax land safely, but Pike, Grog, and Scanlan are nowhere to be seen. They look around themselves at the weird surroundings, wondering where they are.

Trivia[]

  • Rimecleft as a location did not exist in Campaign One, and Kamaljiori instead resided within the Frostweald of Tal'Dorei. However, in the animated series the party was on the continent of Issylra at this time, and Kamaljiori's home was moved to a new location there.[1]
  • The runes on the stones near Kamaljiori's lair read "Fear, mortals. Beware the sphinx and his riddles," "Take the ski-," "The Knowing Mistress," and "Beware the gate."[2][3]
  • More runes on the Obelisk read: "Layout: (Josep)h Martinez, (Ro)ger Oda, (Aur)thur Tang, (Jessic)a Woulfe, Ellen Zhang" which is referring to the Background Layout team that is credited at the end of the episode, along with Ellen Zhang who is credited as a Background Painter.[3]
  • When Kamaljiori uses his shield, the runes that run the circumference of each circle can be translated to mean: "Dear the knowing mistress, the knowing mentor, protected from those who wield dark"[4]
  • Both the vocal and instrumental versions of the Song for Osysa are contained on the The Legend of Vox Machina: Season 2 Soundtrack.
