Intellect devourers are tiny aberrations associated with the mind flayers (illithids); as the name implies, their attacks target the mind.

Creature information[]

Illithids subsist on humanoid brains for sustenance, using the enzymes and psychic energies to fuel their own bodies. However, they occasionally will save a brain to be turned into intellect devourers, which are used to hunt and obtain more brains.

Intellect devourers resemble brains with four clawed, bestial legs. They reside deep in the Underdark together with the mind flayers. They do not have an instinct for self-preservation; illithids create them for a pragmatic purpose.[2]

Abilities[]

While intellect devourers are physically weak, they can easily cripple any individual of low intelligence.

  • Devour Intellect - On a failed Intelligence saving throw, the creature takes 2d10 psychic damage; then, roll 3d6, and if the result is equal to or greater than the target's Intelligence score, the creature's Intelligence score is reduced to zero and it is stunned until it regains at least one point of Intelligence.[1][3]
  • Claw[4]

History[]

During Vox Machina's adventures in the Underdark, an intellect devourer put Grog into a catatonic state with one attack due to the barbarian's already low intelligence score of 6.[5]

Intellect devourers also accompanied the illithid party that Vox Machina was forced to fight in the elder brain temple in Yug'Voril.[6]
