Hug Hive is the most recent name given to both a settlement and community of goblinoids living in the Utesspire Mountains.
Description[]
The Hug Hive is accessible from the top of one of the highest mountains in the area, where there is an entrance with bones of various origins, with a tunnel that connects with double-handled doors that only open if both handles are used at the same time.
The settlement itself is lively and has a market and gardens where fruit grows.[2]
Points of interest[]
- Market
- Cupcake Memorial - Accessed through a tunnel, it consists of an underground waterfall illuminated by lanterns, with crystal blue water from which a pillar rises, and on top of which there is a goblin hand holding a cupcake[3]
- Bad Vibes Bunker - Near and/or connected to the Cupcake Memorial[4]
Society[]
The citizens of the Hug Hive are mostly goblinkin (originally goblins, although hobgoblins arrived later) that used to be obsessed with conflict due to the Curse of Strife, battling against local enemies such as bulettes. After the curse was lifted, they adopted a more carefree philosophy and became more welcoming.[5] Despite not being interested in warfare anymore, the citizens retained their previous knowledge, so they could use it to protect their home with traps and similar devices.[6]
Notable people[]
- Freedom Windsong
- Jaffe, his assistant
- Poogs, his former squire
- Thunderhoove, a miniature horse
History[]
A long time ago the Slayer's Take visited this settlement to deal with a mind flayer, and allowed the local goblins to keep the skeleton of the monster to adorn the entrance. More recently, hobgoblins arrived to the area.[7]
Around 839 PD,[8][9] one year after he left, Poogs returned to this place with the Re-Slayer's Take to ask his old neighbors for help healing Timpani Guff. When they arrived they were surprised to find out that the goblins in the are were free from the Curse of Strife and had renamed both the settlements and some of its members, including Freedom Windsong; the latter explained to Poogs that when he left the settlement, the doctor followed him and saw him befriend Timpani and give him a cupcake. That act of kindness lifted the Curse of Strife from him, causing a domino effect as Freedom spred the story and more goblins got rid of the curse; they ended up building a monument honoring the cupcake, and it had some actual magical power that granted boons for those who meditate there. Shortly after learning about the mind flayer story, and the fact that its remains had disappeared a week before, the adventurers[10] and many of the locals were psychically attacked, falling unconscious.
When scouts informed them that an skeleton army was approaching, the adventurers started organizing the goblins to protect their home, and they did so effectively, containing the undead for the most part; Freedom, however, did order the civilians to evacuate to a bunker during the battle to protect them.[11] After the battle the goblins gave the Re-Slayers some miniature horses to leave the mountains, and declared they were welcome to return whenever they wanted.[12]
Trivia[]
- Locals use slug milk to sweeten foods.[13]
- The goblins of Hug Hive know how to make a type of kombucha that has healing properties, like a potion.[14]
- They have miniature horses that know the mountains good enough to find the settlement by themselves.[15]
