Horned devils, also known as malebranche, are greater devils found in the Nine Hells.
Description[]
Horned fiends stand 12 foot tall[6] and are sheathed in dull red, brown scales as tough as iron.[7] They have massive wings, giant crested horns, red eyes, clawed hands with hooked fingers, hoof-like backwards legs, and long pointed tails.[8]
Abilities[]
Horned devils are resistant to cold damage and to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical weapons that aren't silvered. They are immune to fire, poison damage and immune to the poisoned condition.[1]
- Devil Sight: Magical darkness doesn't impede the horned devil's darkvision.[1]
- Magic Resistance: The horned devil has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.[1]
History[]
The archmage Halas bound a horned devil in the Circlebound Chamber of the Folding Halls of Halas for his research.[9] When the Mighty Nein found him, the horned devil was held captive in a 15-foot circle dome of glowing purple light, where he had already gone mad from extended isolation. He had forgotten his name, and pleaded with them to read him a "poem" in a green book to help him remember.[10]
In 843 PD, during the battle between the Exandrian Accord and the Ruby Vanguard at the Red Center, an army of devils and other fiendish forces joined them to attack the forces defending the Malleus Key. One of them, a horned devil, helped Pike Trickfoot as she and her friends tried to reach the Bloody Bridge.[11]
