Hodmedods are arcane fabric constructs that were used to perform menial tasks in the flying city of Avalir during the Age of Arcanum.
Description[]
Hodmedods are small, brightly colored scarecrow-like creatures. They are produced en masse by the Golden Scythe guild and sold to private purchasers, and can be customized with different colors or with house crests.[1] One seen in the streets of Avalir was described as having a smiling, bright blue stuffed burlap sack for its head, and was wearing a bright red and blue uniform with a pre-recorded message selling umbrellas to the populace.[2]
Hodmedods are not truly sentient, but have a small list of pre-programmed responses.[3]
History[]
Hodmedods were used to serve drinks to the gathered guests at Patia Por'co's Replenishment party.[4] When Nydas Okiro arrived at Patia's party, he was accompanied by an army of hundreds of hodmedods carrying a full-sized tree,[5] and he and Loquatius Seelie discussed placing advertising on them.[6] Nydas later ordered two of the creatures to clean the boots of Purvan Suul, and Galdric was apparently able to sense that they were merely empty fabric.[7]
However, when Patia Por'co cast Detect Thoughts at the party in an effort to learn who might be leaking secrets, she noticed one of the hodmedods which had been serving drinks begin wobbling. She faintly heard, as though it was thinking to itself (which as an automaton it would be unable to do), the words "Ghor Dranas". The hodmedod then apparently dis-animated, becoming a pile of clothing on the floor.[8] Another apparent hodmedod entered the party bearing a gift for Patia, but Cerrit Agrupnin later found it had actually been a cultist in disguise rather than a real hodmedod.[9]
Trivia[]
- The term "hodmadod" is a regional British term for a scarecrow.[10]
