History[]

Screenshot of the hezrou in Sir Gregory Fince's basement, by Wendy Sullivan Green from "The Story of Vox Machina" (Sx06) at 7:21.[art 2]
When the party that would eventually be called Vox Machina investigated Sir Gregory Fince's house, they found him in the basement either dying or dead at the hands of a succubus and demons, including a hezrou. After killing the fiends, Grog Strongjaw took a signet ring of Asmodeus off the demon[2][3][4]—an incongruous detail, since demons are at war with Asmodeus and his devils. But the culmination of that same plot involved a treachery demon pretending to be a "Devil Prince".[5]
In the original Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting, set in 812 PD, twin hezrou demons pretend to be ghosts of great knights protecting the blade of a lost Sovereign of Tal'Dorei, but in fact the greatsword they are guarding is Graz'tchar, which belonged to the Demon Prince of Indulgence and cloaks itself in illusion.[6] In a version of the adventure set decades later, the demons who guard the sword are disguised mariliths,[7] and in an on-stream campaign set seven years later, during the apogee solstice of 843 PD, Bells Hells encountered a nalfeshnee who wielded the sword.[8]
In the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, set in 836 PD, the mid-level adventure hook Overlord of the Overgrowth centers on a hezrou named Garlagrag who has laired in the Lotusden Greenwood around Charis and has begun summoning more and more demons, so that the nearby forest is loaded with hezrous and dretches.[9]
As of about 836 PD, Aurora Watch patrols in the wastes of Xhorhas may still encounter the odd hezrou,[10] possibly left over from the Calamity or having passed through the rift at the Betrayers' Rise more recently.
