Gurt Stumpstuck is a dwarf who guards a the prophecy of the Spectral Hand, as well as the magic items associated with it. As an NPC, Gurt Stumpstuck is played by Nick Williams and George Primavera.

Description[]

Gurt is a stout and hairy (although with a completely bald head) hill dwarf man, with beady eyes.

He is very impatient and seems to be always in a hurry, and that attitude overcomes moments of curiosity or kindness.[1]

History[]

In the past Gurt took possession of a number of magic items associated with the prophecy of the Spectral Hand, and lived with them in a hut in a swamp. At one point he met Timpani Guff, and together they designed a magical way to access the dwarf's bog, using a specific tree with a special password, and protecting it against non-magical damage.[2]

Around 839 PD[3][4] Timpani, accompanied by a group of four adventurers, visited Gurt seeking advice to rescue Poogs. The dwarf immediately identified said adventurers as the chosen ones prophesied by the Spectral Hand, and assuming that they were aware of everything, he guided them inside and presented them with the relics, urging them to each choose one; afterwards, he made them stand in a circle around a green lantern and uttered a chant so that they would immediately attune to the items, explaining the properties of each one. He briefly showed curiosity about the blue glow in Frog's eyes, but when she took too long to answer he lost his patiente.

Timpani thanked him for his help, but when Gurt started talking about the firbolg helping fix his swamp, the group left in a hurry. As they did, the dwarf muttered to himself that there was something off about those adventurers, but he didn't know what.[5] A day later, a completely different group arrived to Gurt's hut, being aware of how to knock on his door and explaining that they were the chosen ones, sent by the Spectral Hand to claim the magic items that were their birthright. The dwarf panicked, realizing that perhaps he had made a mistake interpreting the prophecy.[6]

Days later, when Gurt was returning to his cabin with his green lantern, he found out that Grimm Heldwell was waiting for him inside, and got paralyzed by a Hold Person spell. After boasting about how the Spectral Hand had told him how to find the place, the wizard took the dwarf's green lantern and ran away with it after throwing him against the wall. Gurt tried to chase him, screaming that he didn't know anything about the device; Grimm disagreed, mentioned that he could always return if necessary, and crossed the tree that brought him back to the Vesper Timberland. Gurt tried to use the passwords to open the tree again, but it catched fire, making the dwarf really scared, since it was his only way to get out of there.[7]
