The Grim Verity is a society of scientists, researchers, and other academics dedicated to the research of potentially blasphemous historical theories.
History[]
The club began as a small group of undergraduate students debating fringe theories, but eventually coalesced into a more unified secret academic group that investigates information that powerful organizations may find threatening. Roe Estani was a member when he was younger, but had long since left.[2]
Estani told Orym and Chetney that the Lumas twins had recently joined the Grim Verity, and that he had been unsuccessful in steering them away. Estani believed that the twins may have been assassinated because of their research as members of the group. He gave Orym and Chetney a sealed letter and told them to give it to Ebenold Kai should they find themselves at the Aydinlan Seminary, and that she would vouch for them with the group.
Later, when the group arrived in Bassuras, Hondir told Bells Hells that powerful figures were attempting to suppress or control Grim Verity's recent research into an impending Apogee Solstice, and that recently, researchers had been warned to walk away, threatened, or eliminated entirely. He himself was in hiding in the Hellcatch Valley, which was projected to become a power center or nexus during the Solstice.[3] Hondir knew the Lumas twins, and that they had been eliminated by the Gray Assassins who had killed at least half Grim Verity's members in the past two years when they tried to push back against the suppression of their research.[4]
Hondir stated that Planerider Ryn was also a member of Grim Verity and would the best source of information on whether Ruidus had infiltrated the Shadowfell as it had the Feywild.[5] Once in Yios, Bells Hells pursued the frightened Ebebold Kai and Dr. Baryn Vestisho through a Plane Shift into the study of Planerider Ryn in the Elemental Plane of Fire. There, they were able to explain that they were seeking knowledge about the same subjects the group was researching: Ruidus, the Ruidusborn, and their connection with the upcoming solstice.[6]
Ebenold explained that he and some members of the Grim Verity in Yios had been involved in the creation of the Omen Archive, which catalogued and studied the growing number of Ruidusborn, particularly the most powerful of them, the Exaltant. Meanwhile, members in Vasselheim had become aware of inconsistencies in the promulgated histories of Ruidus. Baryn Vestisho, Janina, and Arnold Drot broke into the temple of Erathis there[7] and stole secret ancient texts referring to the two forgotten gods Vordo and Ethedok, their destruction by the entity Predathos, and Predathos's subsequent imprisonment in the newly-created red moon Ruidus. Drot was captured during the break-in and likely remained in the hands of the Platinum Sanctuary, while Baryn and Janina escaped to Marquet.[8] Baryn believed that the judicators that had recently arrived in Yios were looking for them.[9] Janina then left Yios to scout the location in the Hellcatch Valley which was projected to be the nexus of the upcoming apogee solstice, where the Ruidusborn appeared to be gathering and where it was believed Otohan Thull and the Cerberus Assembly were creating a machine for an unknown purpose and possibly assembling an army.[10] The rest of the Grim Verity was scattered and in hiding.[11]
Planerider Ryn remained as one of the most active members, using her conjuration magic to send different agents and allies in missions while she participated in her own; one of the last missions was trying to destroy the Malleus Key of the Shadowfell with the help of two members of the Mighty Nein, Beauregard Lionett and Caleb Widogast, but all the members of the Verity who participated ended up dying, and the machine wasn't destroyed, only damaged.[12] Moreover, Ryn's sudden petrification in the Tishtan excavation site left some of her allies stuck in different planes, including the Elemental Plane of Fire.
Ebenold Kai, who had been left in the Plane of Fire, was eventually rescued and after the apogee solstice was brought to Whitestone. He was part of a meeting in which he confirmed that the Grim Verity, in collaboration with Vilya of the Air Ashari, had ensured the support of different political forces in eastern Marquet and the Menagerie Coast against the Ruby Vanguard. He, however, admitted that they had purposely avoided diplomatic interactions with Othanzia, since his organization had stolen documents from Vasselheim.[13]
