Gideor is a former dwarven spireling in the Westruun branch of the Clasp.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Gideor is a stout, dwarven man with a braided, blond beard and "deep-set, untrusting eyes."[2]
When Vax'ildan first met him, Gideor "wore a finely tailored blue coat with golden embroidery and emerald decorations," which he found gaudy, as well as a gold signet-ring with the symbol of the Clasp on his left index finger.[2] On their next encounter, Gideor "wore a velvet doublet underneath a loose coat, both in a dark mossy green," with silver beads in his beard.[5]
Personality[]
Vax'ildan described Gideor, upon their first meeting, as a dangerous man: "…all edges. Sharp words, sharp smiles, sharp knives. He exuded power."[2] Gideor was polite and amicable in that encounter, but his "presence dominated the room."[2][6] The other members of the Clasp treat the spireling with respect and reverence, while Lyre in particular seemed afraid of him.[7][8] Gideor expresses his anger through a false smile and a "charming attitude."[9] He was calm and unsympathetic as he gruesomely transformed Lyre against his will, and seemed unbothered by the idea of giving him over as a prisoner to a nobleman.[10] Vax'ildan noted that Gideor's smile at Lyre’s suffering was the only genuine smile that he had seen on the spireling.[11]
Gideor appears to be a collector of valuable objects. His office is eclectically decorated with artwork and trinkets, including a small, silver wolf; a throne-like chair; several books with the Clasp's symbol embossed on them in gold filigree; and "a wooden doll with emerald-green eyes," possibly made by Beryl.[12][13][14] It also has no windows and is lit only by magic.[5]
Biography[]
Background[]
Around or prior to 801 PD,[note 1] Gideor was a member of the Clasp alongside Culwen. They were involved in an incident in Kymal, in which Derowen lost her home and nearly lost her life.[15] Culwen - her brother - bargained for her life, which caused friction between him and Gideor, and earned Culwen enemies; Culwen believed that Gideor saw him as a threat ever since.[15][3][16]
At some point before the events of c. 807 PD, and possibly prior to the incident in Kymal, both Gideor and Culwen became spirelings of the Westruun Clasp.[1]
Kith & Kin[]
Around 807 PD,[17] Spireling Gideor was one of the three leaders of the Clasp in Westruun, alongside Culwen and one other individual.[1][18][3] A minor nobleman (presumably Berin Abenard), who had contracted the Clasp before and whom Gideor described as "a good customer," hired them to kidnap Vex'ahlia.[2] Her brother Vax'ildan intercepted a Clasp agent, Lyre, and asked to be brought to the person who gave him the assignment: Spireling Gideor.[18] He was magically put to sleep and brought to Gideor's office, where Gideor appeared to already know a lot about him.[12] Vax'ildan asked the spireling to break the contract; Gideor suggested they amend it instead: Vax'ildan would complete a heist for the Clasp, and Gideor would handle the contract while the twins were out of town.[19] The contract was to retrieve a ring from Jorenn Village: "an heirloom of a Westruun family that somehow made its way to the hands of the Shadewatch."[20][21]Gideor brought Vax'ildan through the Clasp's building, where he inquired about Culwen with a halfling juggler, who said he was probably in Turst Fields.[7] They then went into a tavern, where they found Lyre.[22][8] Gideor admonished Lyre for another failed contract and brought the two men into a back room, which Vax'ildan guessed was the room where the spirelings met.[9] Gideor retrieved a staff made of tongues from a cabinet, used it to transform Lyre into a copy of Vex'ahlia, and ripped out his tongue to add it to the staff.[10] He told Vax'ildan that Lyre would serve as a decoy "[f]or as long as our gentleman contractor has use of him."[23] Gideor then gave Vax'ildan more information about the contract and allowed him to see the Clasp's healers.[24] Gideor said that there was no need to brand him until after the job.[25]
Vax'ildan returned to Westruun with a notebook stolen from Derowen's office, containing proof that the Shademaster and Spireling Culwen, both of whom were now dead, had been stealing from the people of Jorenn Village and from the Clasp.[26] He believed that that had been Gideor's true motivation in sending him to retrieve Fracture, which he instead gave to Wick.[27] Gideor neither confirmed nor denied this but pointed out that Vax'ildan had not completed the contract as stipulated, and that he would not be willing to let him go without being initiated into the Clasp.[28] He summoned Kal into the room and brought the two men to a room with a view of Westruun.[29] Vax'ildan swore loyalty to the Clasp, and Gideor branded him with the Clasp's symbol between his shoulder blades.[30] He let Vax'ildan go, with a reminder that he may be called upon in the future to serve the Clasp.[31]
Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting[]
By 812 PD, Gideor was no longer a spireling in the Clasp.[4]
Relationships[]
Culwen[]
Gideor and his fellow spireling Culwen had a tense, antagonistic relationship; which Culwen described as a "debate between the two."[3] Culwen seemed unsurprised that Gideor had sent someone to steal Fracture from his sister, and believed that Gideor saw him as a threat to his power.[32]
