Gaz Tomo is a reiloran juggernaut working for the Volition in the city of Kreviris on Ruidus. As an NPC, he is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Like most juggernauts, Gaz Tomo is tall, broad, and hulking, with heavy marks on his face and dark tattoo-like markings worked into his crest. When first encountered by Bells Hells, he was wearing a heavy hooded cloak wrapped over his shoulders and was accompanied by three small scurrying myceits.[1] He is about 8 1/2 feet tall and his shoulders are about 5 feet wide.[2]

Biography[]

In the past Gaz worked with the Imperium, but always had a nagging sense that what he was doing was wrong. Around 833 PD, he encountered the leader of the Volition, the Golden Hammer,[3] and almost killed the rebel, but hesitated, having a moment of empathy that led him to cry for the first time asking for help. The Golden Hammer took him with him, unmarked him, and Gaz joined the Volition.[4]

When the Golden Hammer died and was succeeded by his daughter, Rashinna, Gaz became her ally too. As of 843 PD she described him as both her right hand and the right hand of the Volition itself. He arrived at their most recent safe house three days before Bells Hells[5] and met with the party there, answering their many questions and sharing his knowledge of the city and the history of Ruidus, although he was somewhat embarrassed when he mentioned details of an upcoming assassination mission in front of the new recruits. Later that night he spoke with them for a while, giving them some details about the goals of the rebels and how they fought, before leaving and being unknowingly followed by Chetney's Arcane Eye, although Gaz only talked with some people and played with the myceits.[6]

The following morning, as different teams prepared to start their respective missions, it was revealed that the assassination mission Gaz had referred was against Liliana Temult, and Gaz would be leading it.[7] Liliana survived the attack by Gaz and his team, although she was wounded.[8]

Gaz survived the encounter as well, but was so badly hurt psychically that he had to be rescued and the aftermath of Liliana's magic left him with psychic damage that caused him difficulty in mental processing and speaking.[9] When Bells Hells returned to Ruidus with the Mighty Nein, Rashinna asked them to contact Gaz, and he met with them at the Ceramic Tower where he told them about his fight with Liliana and listened to the adventurers' plans, which involved moving up the timetable for a planned attack by the Volition. Although he struggled a bit understanding them, he agreed to tell his boss about it, and Rashinna told him she was okay with it and that she would meet with the Exandrians later.[10] As they waited Jester Lavorre and Veth Brenatto offered Gaz chocolate chip cookies and booze respectively, and he loved both things. He also told Dorian Storm and Braius Doomseed about the goals of the Volition.[11] The juggernaut introduced the group to Rashinna when she arrived, although he got distracted playing with a purple substance Veth had made (even trying to eat it). When Caduceus Clay made tea for them Gaz joined them, trying it for the first time and declaring it tasted like flowers; when they explained to him how tea worked, he compared it with Ruidian mushroom water. Later, during a conversation about Fjord and Jester's wedding plans, the Ruidian expressed curiosity about the concept of a honeymoon, and when he explained he didn't know what honey was, the tiefling gave him some. He liked it so much that he started talking to Rashinna about it when she came back. Before he left with the Mighty Nein, he wished luck to Bells Hells with their own mission.[12]

When they attacked the Arx Creonum, Gaz used his telekinetic powers to help the adventurers cross to the citadel on harnesses attached to a cable[13] and later joined them in the battle against the reilorans defending the citadel. He was such an intimidating warrior that some of his foes preferred to run away, but still, he kept fighting. When he decided to stay behind fighting so that the Mighty Nein could keep going, Jester left a honey jar with him in thanks.[14]

Appearances and mentions[]

Quotations[]

  • "I'm a little broken in the brain these days."[15]

Trivia[]

  • Gaz's voice is a nod to American actor Patrick Warburton, specifically his portrayal of Kronk from Disney's The Emperor's New Groove. His knowledge of flora and fauna, and general good heart are similar to the characteristics of Kronk.
  • He has a soft spot for myceits.
  • He is one of the reiloran hulks that lack telepathy. He, however, has enough psychic power to use the telekinetic abilities other reilora usually display.[16]
