Gallan Westman is the ship's carpenter and a current crew member of the Nein Heroez. He also formerly sailed aboard the Balleater and aboard The Mistake under Javeed Jawgrasp, during which it was called The Mist, and under Fjord, for whom Gallan also served as first mate. As an NPC, Gallan Westman is played by Matthew Mercer.

Gallen Westman is a human with an unshaven and patchy beard, a mixture of scars and possible childhood acne making it incomplete. His skin is tinted dark from years of sunburn damage and a general seafaring lifestyle. His hair is a lighter brown but appears darkened and matted down due to lack of maintenance or hygiene. He acquired a giant visible scar on the back of his head from Jester's axe.[2]
Personality[]
Gallan is an everyman with an everyman disposition. He is frightened when provoked but will fight in the hour of need. He also is a man that takes pride in his work and feels greatly accomplished when others sing his praises. Gallan Westman is also a diligent worker as he continued the job he was enlisted to do even after the original crew and captain died. He has shown himself to be a warm and empathetic person despite the company he keeps and had become protective of the new crew of the Mist by the time they reached Darktow.[3]

Prior to being encountered by the Mighty Nein, Gallan was a member of The Revelry who served on the pirate ship The Mist as its carpenter under the pirate captain Javeed Jawgrasp.[4]
"Dockside Diplomacy" (2x35)[]
Gallan was ordered by Captain Jawgrasp to burn everything when the crew attacked the Mighty Nein. He was able to burn a great many important documents before being stopped.[5]
He engaged in combat with members of the Mighty Nein after going below deck, during which Caleb Widogast Suggested he hide under a desk, Gallan nearly took out Fjord, and Jester Lavorre accidentally almost killed him with an axe to the head.
"O Captain, Who's Captain?" (2x36)[]
Jester Lavorre discovered that Gallan was still alive and still had an ax in his head. Caleb Widogast removed it and Caduceus Clay healed him. They proceeded to interrogate him, and he cooperated after some resistance. He did not know very much about Jawgrasp or Avantika's plans and said he was not very important. Nott cheered him up by pointing out that he was very important. He was the only survivor of a "brutal attack". Gallan seemed to feel better thinking about the situation this way, but then became disturbed again when Nott mentioned the axe that had been stuck in the back of his head. Since Gallan was the only surviving member of the original crew, Jester and Nott appointed him as the new first mate of the rechristened The Mistake.[6]
When the ship scraped across reefs and started taking on water, Gallan impressively patched a break in the hull. His patch job slowed the breach to a slow leak that allowed the ship to still sail until The Mistake could reach the island of Urukayxl.[7]
"Dangerous Liaisons" (2x37)[]
Gallan stayed behind on The Mistake to continue making as many repairs as possible while the Mighty Nein went to the Squalleater for a parlay with Avantika.
"Dark Waters" (2x98)[]
When the Mighty Nein re-boarded the Balleater in Nicodranas to head to the peace talks, Gallan was one of the four main crew operating the ship, along with Orly Skiffback, Marius LePual, and Shelda.
"High Seas, High Stakes" (2x99)[]
Gallan arrived on deck shortly after Fjord's resurrection and asked if everything was all right, then quickly went to work making repairs to the lower decks.
"Hunted at Sea" (2x100)[]
Gallan attempted to help fire the cannons at the dragon turtle who was pursuing the Mighty Nein, but was mostly unsuccessful. Later, along with Jester, he made further repairs to the ship. He also told Fjord that there were rumors on Darktow that there was a dragon turtle in service to the Revelry.[8]

Trivia[]
- It is unusual to have Gallan, the ship's carpenter, appointed first mate as that role typically goes to the ship's quartermaster.
- When Fjord was removed from The Mistake and inducted into the Squalleater's crew, Gallan Westman as first mate was technically promoted to acting captain of The Mistake.
- Gallan has admitted being unable to read and write after he was asked by Nott to change the name of the the Mist to The Mistake.[9]
