Fracture is a ring that can be used to control ash walkers, including attracting and repelling them in groups.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Fracture is a distinctive ring, with shards of bone and dark cloudy gems ("the color of thunderstorms") adorning an intricate silver filigree band.[2] The ring itself is described as "cloudy" and pretty,[3] and it sparkles in the daylight.[4] The gems are similar to those excavated from a pure silver vein in the Umbra Hills, which when extracted caused ash walkers to animate and be drawn to the material;[5] this was no coincidence, according to Culwen: the ring's gems came from the Umbra Hills.[6]
The ring's silver feels warm to the touch, and using the ring causes a feeling of warmth to spread through the wearer. It also causes the air around the wearer to shimmer and swirl.[7]
Properties[]
Vex'ahlia worked out that the ring can summon the ash walkers.[8] She later surmised that the gems were either part of a curse or part of "fractured wards" that kept the ash walkers at bay. The wearer can focus on an ash walker as if aiming and firing a weapon at it, and control the creature's activity, or imagine a barrier and push, causing all the ash walkers in the vicinity to disengage and retreat.[9]
History[]
Clasp Spireling Culwen procured Fracture by means he wouldn't disclose and gave it to his sister Derowen a year after she relocated to Jorenn Village. He offered it to her in exchange for some work space in Shade Hall.[10] Derowen requested that her longtime companion Wick not ask too many questions about it.[11] Wick thought she did not like it at first, but once she understood what it could do for the village, she warmed to it. Attacks on the village actually increased for a while.[6]
Spireling Gideor hired Vax'ildan to acquire the ring by any means necessary from the Shadewatch in Jorenn Village[12] and told him that this ring was an heirloom of a family in Westruun.[13] The twins gradually figured out that Culwen was a member of the Clasp and that Gideor wanted the ring because his fellow spireling had not included the Clasp in the criminal profits Culwen and his sister were reaping through control of Jorenn Village and smuggling the products of nearby mines.[14]
After Culwen learned that Derowen had been careless and exposed their criminal conspiracy, he killed her and attempted to take the ring back.[15]
After using the ring to stop an attack by a crowd of ash walkers, Vex'ahlia decided to leave it with Wick so that he could protect the village.[16] Vax therefore returned to Gideor without the ring, but did bring back evidence of Culwen's betrayal of the Clasp and news of Culwen's death, and Gideor said under the circumstances he'd overlook the failure to retrieve the ring.[17]
