A Flamefriend Lantern is a magical item used by the Fire Ashari of Pyrah, and contains a small and willful fire elemental that acts as an ally, if treated well.
Description[]
These lanterns are made of wrought iron, and hold the small fire elemental inside, acting as a source of light, warmth and fire.[1]
Unlike most magic items, a person who desires to attune to a Flamefriend Lantern must bond with its elemental first (succeeding on a DC 10 Charisma check), and even if they succeed, the attunement can end prematurely if they mistreat and/or offend the flaming creature by exposing them to water, attacking other elementals without reason, among other ways; if this happens, the flamefriend must be compensated and appeased to allow the lantern's power to be used again.[1]
While attuned to the lantern, a creature gains the following benefits:[1]
- Illuminate an area up to 60 feet in radius with bright light, if verbally requested to the elemental as a free action.
- The ability to cast Produce Flame at will, using the lantern as the focus (Wisdom is the spellcasting ability).
- Elemental Essence (action) - For 1 hour the flamefriend shares with the wielder a bit of elemental power, which they won't be able to access again until the next dawn. The wielder can choose one of the following benefits:
- Fire Resistance.
- The ability to deal fire damage equal to proficiency bonus when an enemy hits with a melee attack.
- The ability to cast Burning Hands at 3rd level once (DC 15).
History[]
Flamefriend Lanterns were created by the people of Pyrah thanks to their connection with fire, and thus they are very uncommon outside the Ashari community.
Around 816 PD a group that included some Fire Ashari and Talus Naj traveled to the Dreemoth Ravine, in Wildemount. There was a terrible blizzard, and the temperatures were extremely low even with warm clothing; To help Talus resist them, one of the Fire Ashari lent him his Flamefriend Lantern, and with his warmth and the fire of the Ashari, the group survived the cold. Although eventually the Flamefriend Lantern returned with its owner to Fyrah, Talus remembered the small elemental inside fondly, and twenty years later, when he visited Ev, his friend's daughter, he told her the story of her Flamefriend Lantern, and expressed how tied it was to her family.[1]

- It is possible that originally Flamefriend Lanterns were created using the same abilities firetamers use to bond with the elementals that become their companions.[2][3]
- The elementals inside these lanterns are intelligent enough to understand the wielders, and magically strong enough to withdraw the power they share through the item if they are not treated well. If Ev's lantern can be used as an example, the same flamefriends can inhabit these tools for decades, or even longer.[1]
- Based on the story of Talus Naj and his experience with a flamefriend, these small elementals can allow their companions to hand them over to another person temporarily, and continue to emit light and heat even if the lantern's new bearer is not attuned to it.[1]
