Fearne Calloway (pronounced /ˈfɜrn/) is a faun druid/rogue and member of the Crown Keepers and later Bells Hells. She is played by Ashley Johnson.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Fearne is a faun. She is a little over six feet tall when measuring from her horns,[27][28][29][30] with large eyes (very similar to her mother's),[31] large furry ears,[32] and sea-foam green hair.[33] Her hooves have bits of moss around them. She wears flowy clothing and is covered in poisonous flowers including hemlock and oleander.[34] She has a tail which wiggles when she feels she's being "naughty", although since it's hidden under her clothing it's usually not visible.[35]
During her travels with the Crown Keepers, as she got nearer to the gate to the Feywild her appearance changed. One of her eyes changed from a humanoid to a goat-like pupil, and the flowers she wore began to turn and open.[36] After holding the Circlet of Barbed Vision, one hand blackened and became claw-like.[37] When she visited the Fey Realm with Bells Hells, her appearance similarly modified, with her features becoming more elongated and exaggerated.[38]
When Fearne entered into a pact with Teven Klask, the Retribution of the Hells, the mark of a black horned crown (the symbol of Asmodeus) appeared on the central knuckle of her hand.[39] She also got a tattoo of a flaming bell in her inner thigh.[40]
After absorbing the Spark of Rau'shan, her horns transformed, becoming like volcanic rock with fiery veins. While empowered by the elemental power of the spark, she was surrounded by golden light, with her eyes and hair burning slightly, and the tips of her fingers constantly producing flames (the ones from the Lolth-touched hand were black). Her skin (when she didn't want to hurt whoever was touching her) felt as warm as a mug filled with hot liquid.[41] Even after she dropped the effect and returned to her normal appearance, two tiny flames remained in the middle of each pupil of her eyes, and a faint trail of black smoke trailed from the tips of her ears and fingers.[42]
Personality[]
Fearne is unperturbed and direct. Her soft, demure voice contrasts with her somewhat erratic, insensitive, and self-possessed behavior, in much the same way as the wonderful-looking flowers she wears are actually all poisonous. Fearne loves to collect various trinkets,[43] and she enjoys stealing them.[44] In combat, she always goes for the kill.[45] She is flirty by nature, mostly for fun unless there are deeper feelings involved.[46] She can be awkward in dealing with people because of her extremely sheltered upbringing in the Fey Realm.[47]
Fearne has expressed concern that her emotions don't work the same in the Material Plane, and that guilt, for example, is more intense in Exandria than it ever was in the Fey Realm.[48] She tends to be positive, even if she doesn't really feel it, because she doesn't want to deal with the stress that her mortal friends might die during their adventuring.[49] Fearne is also secretly scared of her own future: after meeting a corrupted version of herself sent by Lady Elmenore, she worries that eventually she will gain power and that will lead her to become her dark self.[50] It was this fear that kept her initially from accepting the power that the Spark of Rau'shan might grant.
Biography[]
Background[]
According to Fearne's mother, Fearne was born in the Verdant Expanse of Tal'Dorei on Exandria's Prime Material Plane under a flare of the red moon Ruidus. When she and her parents returned to the Feywild, the moon began to appear on that plane where it ordinarily does not.[51] The circumstances of Fearne's birth were decided by her biological father, Sorrowlord Athion Zathuda, Birdie Calloway's lover, who lost interest in both mother and daughter as he had more important projects to focus on. Birdie ran away with Oleander, a fey elven prisoner she had fallen in love with, and they decided to raise the small faun as their daughter in common.[52]
At some point during Fearne's childhood, Birdie and Ollie became outcasts and left for the Material Plane, entrusting Fearne to the care of her grandmother Morri Calloway.[53] She last saw them around 90 years before Campaign Three[54] when she was between three and twelve years old,[55] although the apparent time dilation that occurred during her life in the Feywild makes it unclear in what year that was. While they were away, Fearne received letters, gifts, and postcards signed in their name. The hag kept her safe, feeling that the child's fate was a paradox full of potential,[56] but eventually, regardless of her destiny, ended up loving her as a granddaughter, protecting her from the Unseelie agents sent by Sorrowlord Zathuda.
At home in the Feywild, Fearne had a beautiful bedroom where she kept all of the trinkets she had stolen on her travels.[57] She had fey animal friends named Sweet Pea (a sun bear), Bompers (a crocodile), Peepers (a jackrabbit), and Dr. Nesbitt (an owl),[58][59] which Nana Morri would send to her when she was lonely in an effort to make her life more full.[60] Although she wasn't entirely sure as an adult, she suspected that, growing up, Nana Morri occasionally erased her memories about some of her animal friends so she could meet them for the first time several times.[61]
As an adult, in Quen'pillar or Cuersaar 842 PD,[62][63] Fearne traveled from the Feywild to the Prime Material Plane through the gate built by Vox Machina for Artagan.[64][65] Her goals were to explore, to see the rest of the world, and to find her parents, whom she hadn't seen in "a very long time". She had also been entrusted by her grandmother with a round green crystal lens and told to give it to her parents when she found them.
The first of the Crown Keepers Fearne met, apparently, was Orym.[66]
Exandria Unlimited Prime[]
With the rest of the Exandria Unlimited Prime party, Fearne woke up in a house in Emon with no memory of the preceding week. When the party found a baby ankheg in a warehouse they robbed, she was very worried about it and had to be talked out of going back to get it.[67] Later, she suggested taking the crown they had found to her grandmother Morri Calloway in the Feywild, but wasn't sure how to get there right now.[68]
During the battle on the Oh No Plateau, Fearne transformed into a dire wolf and was able to save Little Mister when Dariax attacked him while thinking he was an enemy.[69] She was also instrumental in getting the group away from Poska's attempted kidnapping by casting Charm Person on Poska and convincing her to tell the Nameless Ones to stand down.[70]
During the party's travel south toward Byroden, Fearne realized they were on the road she took to travel to Emon. While in the main thick of the Verdant Expanse, she led the group off the Wildwood Byway and deeper into the woods, feeling a strong sense that she needed to check something. Her eyes began looking more goat-like. They reached an open glade with a strange gate in its center, which Fearne recognized as the gate she came through from the Feywild. She found herself wanting to go through the gate, but when she tentatively put her hand in, a misshapen twin stepped out wearing the Circlet of Barbed Vision. The creature, a forlarren[71] sent by Lady Elmenore to retrieve Fearne, told her that her grandmother was in actuality the one who sent her the gifts purporting to be from her parents, but Fearne was convinced she was lying.[72] The creature invited Fearne to come home, saying, "I found my power," and a battle ensued.[73]
Fearne took part in the Gem of Byroden pageant, but failed to place. Along with others in the party, she dreamed about the Circlet and heard the voice of Lolth,[74] and she was contacted by the Wildmother at the obelisk near Qoniira.[75] At the cube within the ruins of Niirdal-Sarqet, Fearne deciphered the final side, seizing control of it, causing it to shatter apart and release a bright blue miasma of arcane energy.
In the final battle, Fearne again utilized her dire wolf form. The party decided to stay together for at least the time being.[76]
Campaign Three[]
Arc 1: Jrusar[]
Following the events taking place in Exandria Unlimited Prime, the party returned to Byroden. When Keyleth sent Orym on a mission to Marquet, she told him that his friends Fearne and Dorian could be helpful. Keyleth used Transport by Plants to sneak them to the skyship port in Emon, on which they traveled to Jrusar.[77] They soon found themselves responding to a mysterious attack of animated objects in the streets, fighting alongside Ashton Greymoore, Fresh Cut Grass, Imogen Temult, and Laudna, and they attracted the attention of Bertrand Bell,[78] who introduced them to Lord Ariks Eshteross.
After proving themselves to Lord Eshteross, he offered them a chance to combat the evils creeping into Jrusar in return for payment.[79] Their first assignment was investigating thievery in one of his warehouses. During the ensuing battle against the shade creepers, Fearne wild shaped into a constrictor snake,[80] a form she utilized later as well while helping Orym investigate a shade creeper hole.[81]. Fearne assumed the form of a rat while the party investigated Dugger's home,[82] and was knocked unconscious but healed by Fresh Cut Grass.[83] During this period, Fearne was continually stealing or pickpocketing any small object that caught her eye, explaining that she stole because she likes having things.[84]
Fearne assumed rat-form again to infiltrate the jail where Gurge Kisgregg was being held and was stepped on by a guard, causing her to revert to her faun form while surrounded by the wardens,[85] but she was able to talk her way out of it.[86] Later, she, Laudna, Imogen, and Fresh Cut Grass all went on a date with Pretty the Ogre, but while they enjoyed the show and each other's company, at the end of the evening Pretty gently broke up with them, citing the great difference in their personalities.[87]
When the party eventually located the lair of The Nightmare King and engaged him in battle, he sniffed Fearne, then said, "Hm. You smell familiar, like home. Like... Calloway. Interesting."[88] While subsequently preparing an acid spell, he looked at Fearne, sighed, and released it. Before Dimension Dooring away, he told her, "You were as resourceful as I would hope. Hopefully enough to survive," and winked.[89] A few days later, Orym asked her about the fact that Ira Wendagoth recognized her last name. Fearne seemed unconcerned, telling him that her family is basically royalty in the Feywild, though not within the Seelie or Unseelie Courts, and they have lots of enemies.[90]
During the ball during which the party was attempting to steal and replace Armand Treshi's ring, Fearne was able to get Treshi as her dance partner even though he was suspicious of her fey nature due to his dealings with the Nightmare King Ira Wendagoth. She succeeded in pulling the ring from his thumb and dropping it, and in slipping Imogen the tracking ring to substitute.[91]
After the battle against the Shade Mother, Chetney invited Fearne to join him in his room, and she told him that if he howled exactly at 3:00 AM, she'd be there. Later, she knocked on Chetney's door to make sure he wasn't dead, startling him into a howl because he thought he'd missed their 3:00 AM rendezvous. However, he indeed ended up sleeping straight through the night.[92] The next day, Laudna asked Fearne about her past in the Feywild, and Fearne said she left to explore and to find her parents, whom she hadn't seen for a very long time. They left many years ago to travel the Material Plane. The last letter from them was from Aeor.[93]
While the party traveled to Heartmoor Hamlet for the heist at the Twilight Mirror Museum, they encountered a fairy-like creature and asked Fearne to investigate due to her fey expertise. She expressed her disdain for fairies, comparing them to rats, but was lured into range of the creature.[94] During the heist and the fight against the marionettes in the museum, Fearne was at one point one of only two party members still able to fight.[95] When they returned to Jrusar, they purchased a portable hole which was given to Fearne to hold.[96]
Arc 2: Ruidus Rising[]
When the party arrived in Bassuras and met Dusk, Fearne initially bonded with Dusk over their mutual desire to return to the Feywild.[97] Later, Dusk explained they were looking for the people in a locket they wear, which holds the images of Fearne's parents. They helped Dusk get back to the Material Plane from the Feywild but Dusk got separated from them. Dusk has no idea how long ago that was. Fearne confirmed it had been about ninety years since she last saw her parents, who left to do "something very, very important" when she was very young, leaving her with her grandmother to keep her safe. Her family is very important and very well known in the Courts, and she might or might not be a princess.[98] With Fearne's consent, Imogen telepathically reached out to Fearne's mother Birdie Calloway, telling her Fearne and Dusk were looking for her. The response was cautious at first, but when Fearne and Dusk provided details only they would know, Birdie became very excited, saying she and Ollie were a few days out from Bassuras, but they'll meet at "Joe's".[99]
During the Deathwish Run, Fearne provided ground support, eventually waiting at the finish line and slightly widening the safety gap for the party's crawlers in a last-minute booby trap. That evening, Fearne confided to Dusk she was nervous about meeting her parents in the morning, and Dusk told her Chetney had accused her of wanting to kill Fearne's parents. While Dusk seemed horrified and very upset, Fearne thought Chetney was just kidding and she was thinking positive thoughts about having a good day tomorrow. In the morning, as the party approached Imahara Joe's, a skirmish crawler parked in front and a female faun got off, dust-covered from travel, and went in. Fearne became very nervous, but entered to see Birdie there. They joyously embraced, but when Fearne said it had been 90 years, Birdie responded it had been close to six years. Fearne pointed out Dusk, saying Birdie knew her, but Birdie didn't think they'd met. Dusk then transformed into her changeling form and grabbed both Fearne and Birdie. Birdie gasped out to Fearne, "You led them right to us."[100]
Birdie urged Fearne to leave and not get involved, while Dusk, revealing themself as Yu Suffiad, argued that they hadn't hurt Fearne despite having plenty of opportunities. Yu explained that the Calloways had stolen a a precious artifact from the Unseelie Court. As Birdie briefly told Fearne about her birth and how Ruidus had marked her, Fearne attacked Yu with a Flame Blade. When the changeling warned her that if they died, more deadly agents would come, Fearne stated that they would kill them as well. Imogen read Birdie's mind, discovering the Calloways' connection to the Nightmare King, and Birdie explained some details of their plans to discover the nature of the red moon, also confessing the visions her husband had had of what they now realized was an adult Fearne illuminated by Ruidus's destructive crimson light. Fearne offered to accompany Yu to the Feywild in exchange for giving her parents a month of freedom, but her friends talked her out of it. During that conversation, Fearne showed the Weave Lens that she had been given to give to her parents, and Birdie revealed its creator, Morri Calloway, was not related by blood to them. They eventually agreed that Yu would not return for the Moontide Crown for another month, leaving Fearne and her parents alone in the meantime. As they said goodbye, Birdie stole the ring they had used to track down members of the Calloway family.[101]
After Yu left, Birdie and Fearne talked a bit more about Fearne's birth in the Verdant Expanse and her time with Morri, who had sent the postcards on behalf of Fearne's parents so she wouldn't feel like they had abandoned her. Mother and daughter embraced (picking each other's pockets), and finally, Fearne and her friends escorted Birdie and Hondir to the Calloway Layaway.[102] On their way there they were intercepted by the Fist of the Ruiner, and during the ensuing battle Fearne brought Birdie back to consciousness when she fell. During the battle the faun was pickpocketed by Ashton of a thimble as she passed him.[103]
When they finally reached the Calloway Layaway Fearne was reunited with her father, Oleander, and he told Bells Hells how he and his wife had come to Exandria, and how they had spied on and robbed the Unseelie Court. Fearne gave the Weave Lens to her father and told him that she was now older than him, which surprised the elf. Ollie told Fearne about his visions, acknowledging that had he known his daughter had grown so old he would have recognized her in them sooner. When discussing the strange passage of time in the Fey Realm, Ira suggested that Morri had extended the time in her domain to enjoy Fearne's company longer; her parents also noticed that the faun was now very tall, a trait similar to her foster grandmother, who they confessed was an old and lonely hag. Learning of Morrigan's collector nature, Fearne questioned if she herself had been a "payment" to the fey crone, causing the Calloways to turn to Ira in dismay.[104]
After Ira absconded with the Crown and disappeared, the Calloways again apologized to Fearne for her strange upbringing under Morri's protection. Ollie agreed to allow Imogen and FCG into his mind, and they discovered several areas of his memories of Ira that were blurred or missing. During this, Ollie began to bleed from one nostril; at that point Fearne encouraged her friends to continue (thinking her father was strong enough to take a risk), but they pulled back. Fearne then gave her parents the music box she had commissioned from Chetney, and while they found the gift lovely (Chetney had done a great job) the music itself was worse than expected, so Fearne advised her parents to use that present only as a box.[105]
Later Imogen and FCG pulled Fearne aside and talked to her about her anger towards her parents, as well as her feelings of abandonment, something the three of them had in common. Chetney made the faun a wooden doll for her to speak to and externalize her feelings (Laudna named her "Caviar", putting her with her own dolls in the dollhouse so they could have some fun). Fearne pulled her parents aside and told them them how angry she was, and they acknowledged her feelings. She also told them how good of a mother she was to her own "child", Little Mister, after which she assured them she would work at forgiving them and knowing them better.[106]
That night, Fearne stole two shards of gnarlrock from the laboratory and placed them in Laudna's dollhouse and Imogen's pouch, hoping to strengthen their friendship;[107] both Orym and FCG noticed, but Fearne explained to FCG she was just returning to Imogen something the sorcerer had lost. When FCG's stress boiled over and they attacked the party, Fearne's Heat Metal knocked the aeormaton unconscious as they shouted at Fearne, "Your parents don't like you. They never did, and that's why they got rid of you. And you know what? They were fucking right!"[108]
The party eventually returned to Bassuras and joined Paragon's Call. During the confusion of Artana Voe's feint attack on the citadel, Fearne and Ashton were able to steal several crates containing Potions of Possibility and powdered residuum being loaded for transport onto a crawler. As the party attempted to escape they were confronted by Otohan Thull, who proved a formidable foe. During the battle, Fearne was knocked unconscious and revived. Shortly later, Otohan again knocked her unconscious, saying, "You carry the seed. Just not as strong as others".Holding her blade above the unconscious Fearne, Otohan demanded information on the location of the Moontide Crown or she would strike. Laudna told her east, in the Panagrip Sands. Looking at Imogen, Otohan said, "You were so close," as she stabbed twice into Fearne. Fearne's final words were, "Boy, that was a hell of a run."[109]
After Imogen's psychic blast that appeared to banish Otohan, Fresh Cut Grass cast Revivify on Fearne, telling her spirit he thought she was making a new family with them, that he wanted to help her be whole again, and that he needed her to stay. Beyond the dark border of death and oblivion, Fearne thought about staying to explore but eventually decided to be pulled upward, back out into the light. She learned both Orym and Laudna were also dead, leaving the choice of who to use her only Revivify spell on completely up to her. Fearne didn't know who to choose. The rest of the party were at a loss as well, and FCG gave Fearne his medallion of the Changebringer to flip as a coin. When Delilah Briarwood (via Imogen's Sending) said she could not help Laudna, Fearne tossed the coin. Looking at the result, she went to Laudna, knelt at her side, and told her, "We'll find a way back for you, I promise." She then moved to Orym and gathered him up, asking him to please come back because she was getting a little scared. Orym opened his eyes to see Fearne's anxious face. She told him Laudna was dead.[110]
During the voyage back to Jrusar, Fearne and most of the rest of the party were at one point swept overboard and attacked by a burrowing worm creature, but were able to escape. Fearne had pickpocketed a spyglass from Captain Xandis on their previous voyage, and Orym had stolen it in turn from her; Orym now left it where Xandis would find it. When they reached the city, Fresh Cut Grass asked Fearne for the return of his Changebringer coin that she had refused to return after using. At first she denied knowing what he was talking about, then denied taking it, then denied knowing where it was. Finally, FCG cast Detect Object and took it from her. Fearne said she wanted to melt it because she didn't like its association with Laudna's death. FCG helped her understand where the motivation for her constant pickpocketing might be coming from.[111]
After Keyleth came to help Bells Hells, taking them with her magic to Whitestone, Fearne took an interest in her Mantle of the Tempest and the Ashari leader noticed the faun's peculiar fey nature. They briefly chatted about their common magical abilities. Fearne told Keyleth about the involvement of the Unseelie Court and her own parents in the recent events in Marquet. When the party was sent into the shadow realm holding the spirits of Laudna and Delilah Briarwood, Fearne tried to bargain with Delilah at the Sun Tree before the battle began. She discovered that any harm to the tree also affected Delilah and used her fire magic to contribute to Delilah's eventual defeat (with Imogen dealing the final blow).
After Laudna's successful resurrection, while thanking Pike for her help, Fearne tried unsuccessfully to pickpocket Pike's holy symbol, but Pike didn't appear to hold the attempt against her. The party had dinner with the de Rolos, during which Fearne convinced Percival de Rolo to give Little Mister a small pop-gun. The party slept under the Sun Tree, and the next day, trying to emulate Keyleth, Fearne cast Speak with Plants upon it. The Sun Tree seemed to like the faun, but was unable to create a travel portal for her by itself without the aid of a spell.
After returning to Jrusar and discovering that Otohan had killed Lord Eshteross Bells Hells, they discovered that the orcish noble had bequeathed them the Silver Sun, and they set out on the ship to Yios. During the trip Ruidus flared, causing Chetney to transform into a wolf and attack Fearne and Orym. They managed to calm him down until the gnome came to his senses, and the druid casted Daylight to help with said task.
Fearne would help defeat several cockatrices and a chimera before they reached the Gloomed Jungles, where Bells Hells decided to descend to search for the Gorgynei (who could help Chetney better control his animal side). Fearne helped summon them using her Wild Shape to transform into a wolf and howl. Two days later (after a trip during which Fearne ate a hallucinogenic mushroom whose effects she enjoyed), when Chetney went through Sahyaadon's trial in Zha'Vrollo, the Bells Hells battled a bigger and more terrifying incarnation of the gnome's wolf form, while he tried to regain control. At the beginning of the battle Fearne was angry because Chetney had destroyed Little Mister, but later, as part of her strategy to appeal to Chetney, the druid used her Wild Shape to transform into a "sexy wolf" to distract him, and later casted Daylight just like she had done in the skyship days before, helping Chetney to regain control. When the trial was over and only Orym and her remained in the chamber, the Wildmother blessed the halfling's sword, turning it into a magical weapon. Fearne witnessed it, and after Orym left, she made a platinum offering, as a thanks for the kindness shown towards the Air Ashari.
The next morning, while the Silver Sun was coming to pick them up, Laudna approached Fearne, asking her for advice on fire magic. The faun gave her some advice and they practiced for a bit, until the sorcerer successfully (and unexpectedly) casted Fireball (damaging the druid in the process, although not badly); that success made Fearne feel like she was a good teacher. They also spoke about the circumstances of Laudna's death and revival, and joked about how they could blame the Changebringer for the sorcerer's prolonged dead period. Before they left the Gloomed Jungles Manad talked to Fearne, telling her it would be nice if they visited again, to which Fearne agreed.
After Bells Hells arrived to Yios they went to a casino for a last night of fun before starting their mission in the city. Fearne and her friends played several gambling games, during which she bet a lot of money. The faun also talked to a guard, taking an interesting in the city and its different dangers and points of interest, including the Aydinlan Seminary (although causing some mistrust when she declared she was a traveling professor, despite Ashton's assistance with the lie). At some point she and Fresh Cut Grass talked to Freya (the desk clerk) to book a room for free, and when they failed, they paid her for the room on the condition that she pretended like they hadn't paid; Fearne also gave an extra tip since she had been a bit rude.
The next day, after Bells Hells fought Shithead, an undead bird that was chasing Fresh Cut Grass, they went to the Aydinlan Seminary, and after asking a few questions (during which Fearne presented herself as a professor, offering her services), they ended up leaving with Carolle, a receptionist FCG enchanted so she would guide them to Ebenold Kai's home. On their way there the group tried to gain Carolle's friendship and trust so that, when the Fast Friends spell ended, she would not feel hostility towards them; as part of the strategy, Fearne gave her poppies that she had collected in the Gloomed Jungles (while under the effect of hallucinogenic mushrooms, so she believed that said poppies could talk), since the receptionist was interested in flowers.
They found Professor Kai hiding in a basement with Dr. Baryn Vestisho, and Fearne and her friends (minus Ashton) were transported with them to the Elemental Plane of Fire, where they spoke with the two members of the Grim Verity and Planerider Ryn, exchanging information about Ruidus and the events connected to it. Bells Hells, after discovering that Otohan and the Cerberus Assembly had bigger plans involving the red moon and building machines in different planes, declared themselves willing to try and sabotage any plans that would affect Ruidus and endanger Exandria. Since one of their options was to travel to the Fey Realm, Fearne very enthusiastically assured her friends that they would love the house she grew up in, and that her grandmother (whom she still trusted) could help them. At the faun's insistence and after getting a vague description of the hag, Imogen cast Sending to speak to Morri, and the old fey answered, excited at the idea that her granddaughter was going to visit her with friends, and assuring them that she could help them. Fearne was very happy when Imogen told her that Morri's voice sounded warm (even though the sorcerer was in fact scared after the Fatestitcher's ominous answer).
After Ryn sent them back to Ebenold's house, the adventurers discovered that three intruders were using an air elemental to explore the house and find the basement. The party tried to confuse the newcomers into thinking they were having a party with adult content, and Fearne contributed by shedding her clothes and casting Produce Flame to do a burlesque dance around Laudna and Imogen; however, the farce eventually ended, and a brief battle ensued: Fearne transformed into a massive Clydesdale horse, and while she had some difficulty moving in such a small space, she managed to leave the basement, being stopped only by Chetney, and later returning to her faun form after being hit by a Lightning Bolt. After combat the group escaped taking one of their enemies for questioning, loading him on Fearne's back (transformed into a horse).
When they found a place with enough privacy the adventurers interrogated Tuldus (for that was the mage's name), using Imogen's telepathy and FCG's Fast Friends. Fearne stayed in horse form for a bit, chewing the enemy's hair, but eventually returned to her true form again and actively joined the conversation, showing interest in specific details about the plans of Tuldus' organization. Later, after meeting with Ashton at the Aydinlan Seminary, the group divided, and Imogen and Fearne left FCG and Laudna with Vitro Isham, an expert in automatons, while they went to visit Kadija Sumal, an ally of the Grim Verity and the professor who had worked with Liliana Temult.
The orcish teacher turned out to be very skittish initially, but after gaining her trust, Imogen and Fearne shared with her a conversation about the Ruidusborn, their nature and their connection to strange dream entities; Kadija was willing to share with Imogen the few documents from her study that she still had, but at that moment Ludinus Da'leth showed up at the office, and despite Fearne's attempt of stopping him (during which she even resisted a spell he cast on her), the elf deprived the orcish teacher of her free will with a spell and he took said papers for himself; before leaving he chatted briefly with the sorcerer and the druid, identifying both as Ruidusborn and the former as Liliana's daughter, and exchanging impressions of the deities and the loyalties of each person present there before the old elf departed; during the conversation Fearne had Little Mister present as a precaution. Bells Hells ended up meeting at Sumal's office. After such an encounter, and seeing that Kadija had been left in a very fragile state, they decided to call Ryn, who came and confirmed that she would seek help for the professor and would take care of the still spellbound Tuldus (relieving Pâté of his role). As promised, the Planerider transported Bells Hells to the Feywild in that very office after giving Fearne a flower that was growing in the rod she used for the spell.
The group appeared in the Harrowcall Fens, a marshland with strange plants and anomalous landscape, near the home of Fearne's grandmother. The faun, excited to be back in her childhood plane, began leading her friends around and talking to them about the place (although they were kept up by some music-loving flowers and an animated tree that tried to bar their way); at some point Fearne heard a bird-like creature and thought it was Dr. Nesbitt, but it didn't answer when she called. However, they managed to successfully reach the Ligament Manor, the home of the Fatestitcher. When the adventurers were inside the gloomy house, Fearne hugged her grandmother (a strange hag of impossible proportions), who welcomed them and offered them a cocktail.[112]
The group stayed at the mansion for the rest of the day, and Fearne caught up with her grandmother; both of them were quite happy about seeing each other again, and the druid introduced all her friends (as well as Mister) to the old fey, who among other things clarified that she made the Weave Lens for Ira because she owed him a favor; during that conversation Fearne briefly reunited with Peepers, one of her animal friends. Fearne showed her friends her old room and (with Morri's permission), the Fatestitcher's collection; later, Fearne reunited in the garden with Sweet Pea, a sun bear who had taken care of them and who was very happy to see her again, and both joked around Bells Hells about the nature of the humanoid-like plant ornaments of the garden. Before going to bed, since FCG was going to cast Shared Dream on Imogen, Laudna and himself, Fearne tried to help by taking some lavender from the garden, in case the smell helped the sorcerer relax. The next day the adventurers said goodbye to Morri, who gave them directions on how to get to Unseelie territory and how to find a portal back to the Material Plane; grateful for the magical bust the mortals had given her, the hag gave them magical items and a substance to ensure their return to Exandria without suffering from the time warp; she also gave her granddaughter the Gloomscale Breastplate, judging her old enough to wear it, and reminding her that she could return to Ligament Manor whenever she wanted.
On the way to Sun's Shadow the adventurers met Dr. Nesbitt, a bird friend of Fearne's who had followed them to say goodbye to her; while initially Nesbitt was willing to go with them to the Unseelie Court, a combination of Little Mister's jealousy towards him and Fearne's concern about the bird's safety convinced him to return to the manor. Later, the group was found by a patrol of three nomadic centaurs who tried to capture them to sell them to the Unseelie Court; however, Bells Hells managed to knock two of them unconscious and destroy the animated tree they had summoned. The third centaur was killed by a powerful combination of Fearne, Imogen and Laudna's magic. From there Fearne led her group for a while, even though she had never been in that specific area before.
Once they managed to access the Shiver Keep (after a brief problem with Ashton and sentient ground) Bells Hells set out to sabotage the machine that was summoning Ruidus in the Fey Realm. Laudna, Orym and Fearne (the latter in the form of a slow loris) managed to get into the structure itself, where they inspected its components to see how they could damage the machine, leaving dynamite inside before leaving. One of the eremads finally took notice of the intruders, and a brief confrontation ensued in which the mortals emerged victorious, and during which Fearne cast Wall of Fire to engulf the Malleus Key, causing even greater destruction than they had expected; however, the sound brought Sorrowlord Zathuda back on his draconic mount, Gloamglut (who had been patrolling the area and had destroyed Pâté's physical form). The Unseelie captain unleashed his beast on the adventurers, who tried to avoid as much damage as possible while trying to escape, having already destroyed the Malleus Key. Fearne was severely injured during the process, being kept safe thanks to FCG's magic, just to be knocked unconscious a few seconds later by the draconic beast, after which Bells Hells took her with them while running away.
During their escape through the Sablecast woodland Fearne was healed by FCG, and once conscious, helped guide the group through the thicket; at one point the ground caught one of Imogen's legs and Fearne tried to bribe the floor with a silver fork, but once the sorcerer was free and the druid tried to retrieve the object she could not find it. Since they were still being pursued by Zathuda, Gloamglut and the Unseelie forces, Imogen made a desperate call to Morri, and when the hag didn't answer Fearne assured her not to worry, her nana was coming; indeed, shortly after the powerful fey woman appeared on the back of a gigantic dark bird to face the Sorrowlord and give the party time to escape; Fearne was kind to the plant life that was allowing them through, and when she saw the Fatestitcher being knocked out of the air she reassured her friends, assuring that her grandmother was fine. When facing Terrosh, the portal guardian, Fearne was incensed to see Ashton offer as payment a trinket that they had stolen from the faun, and she also reacted badly when the Lidless Slumber showed interest in Little Mister's rifle; however, when it was the druid's turn to pay to use the portal, she gave Terrosh a golden skeleton key, and he sent her to Exandria, reminding her that she was welcome to return to the Fey Realm whenever she wanted.
When Bells Hells discovered that they were in the Taloned Highlands, near Imogen's hometown, Fresh Cut Grass stressed that it might benefit them to visit the village and speak with the sorcerer's father, Relvin Temult, although she didn't seem very enthusiastic about it. Fearne was sympathetic to her friend, having parental issues herself, but assuring Imogen that she could go back without fear because she was a badass now. The next day, at Fearne's request, Imogen cast Sending and checked to see that Morri was okay, confirming the faun's confidence in her nana's toughness. During their journey to Gelvaan Fearne helped an exhausted Orym, carrying him; later, before they went to bed and Imogen tried to explore in dreams with FCG's help, the druid prepared tea, played music for them and sprinkled them, Laudna and Chetney with lavender; she also switched people's clothes while they were sleeping.
When Bells Hells arrived in Gelvaan and met with Relvin, Fearne said that they were his daughter's best friends, and when he was hostile about their questions, Fearne bluntly explained that they were dealing with the end of the world; while in the stables Fearne also met Imogen's mare, Flora, petting her and decorating her mane with ribbons. After the relatively productive father-daughter meeting the Silver Sun arrived, and Fearne and her friends left Gelvaan in dramatic fashion.
While on their way to the Tishtan excavation site Bells Hells, after having a brief talk about the visible ley lines in the sky (which Fearne tried to touch), checked their potential allies. The druid stated that Nana Morri would certainly help if she asked her. That night, with FCG's help, Fearne and Orym were sent to Imogen's dream looking for her mother. After the dream and the conversation with Liliana, Imogen had doubts about whether what Ludinus was looking for could be good, and Fearne asked for details about the vision the sorcerer's mother had shown her, although ultimately the group reaffirmed the need to oppose the release of Predathos; Orym later commented to Fearne that if necessary, if Imogen turned on the group he would distract her while the druid tried to neutralize her, although the faun wasn't sure if she was strong enough.
In the following days Fearne (as well as Ashton) learned a bit from Xandis about how to fly their skyship, and during a dust storm she tied herself near the captain to see how they were navigating through the tempest. After Orym talked with Dorian Fearne wondered if maybe Opal (their friend in Tal'Dorei) could be affected by the ley lines. When Bells Hells arrived to the Calloway Layaway Fearne was warmly greeted by her parents, and despite the existing tension between them, she decided to be nice with them, since the end of the world was near; she also told Ira that Morri said "Hi", and tried to inquire if the Nightmare King knew about Predathos (he didn't). While they were there, Fresh Cut Grass also took the chance to do some family therapy with the Calloways, although their daughter wasn't able to get too much from it.
When they finally took of again with the Silver Sun, Bells Hells were dividing up their items (new and old), and Fearne showed interest in using Chetney's Butcher's Bib, although he would end up keeping it; they also wondered if the faun would be able to use the Feywild shard, it could only be used by a sorcerer, so it was handed over to Laudna. At some point the Silver Sun, was surprised by a dust storm, and in the middle of it, an ember roc started chasing them. The adventurers attacked the creature a few times, but it seemed determined to pursue their skyship, so when it was close enough, Fearne cast Polymorph, turning the gargantuan bird into a goldfish, so small that was blown away by the strong winds. When Orym's mysterious seed showed signs of life, Fearne suggested that he should talk to it, although it ended up being planted, after which a flower bloomed and delivered a message from Keyleth. On the night before the last day of the voyage before the solstice, the druid played a song on her dulcimer, called "Red Moon".
In the last leg of their journey Bells Hells reviewed their plan to infiltrate the Tishtan excavation site and try to destroy the Malleus Key by crashing the Silver Sun against it. They decided that Fearne and FCG would stay in the ship with Ira and Captain Xandis to be able to achieve that and then magically abandon the ship before impact. The faun, despite her previous enthusiasm about being in charge of the skyship, was nervous about it, but Fresh Cut Grass reassured her. Later, the druid and the Nightmare King had a brief but tense moment when she returned the spyglass she had stolen from him, claiming that she had found it lying around.
When Imogen, Laudna, Chetney, Ashton and Orym, disguised as members of Paragon's Call and the Ruby Vanguard, were about to leave infiltrate enemy territory, the halfling hugged Fearne and she asked them to run if something went wrong. The barbarian also hugged Fearne, trying to steal something from her but she noticed; when Ashton confessed they wanted to take something personal and irreplaceable, Fearne kissed them in the head, leaving the genasi briefly surprised, although shortly after he told her that she was really great.
Fearne and FCG stayed in the ship for a while, trying to understand a bit more how to fly it, and talking with Ira about his motivations and his similarities with Fearne. After contacting Orym and him commenting that he would like to have FCG with them, the cleric decided that he and Fearne (who drank a Potion of Possibility as part of her preparation) would go down to join the rest of Bells Hells, leaving Ira and Xandis to charge of the skyship (and making Ira promise to save the captain when the time comes). After all the members of Bells Hells were reunited everyone except Imogen and Orym hid inside the defeated warder they had with them, and FCG took control over it; Fearne stayed inside but she didn't like confined spaces, so during a combat against some enemies she and Laudna left the Warder.
Because of the sabotages happening in the excavation, Ludinus decided to rush his plans with the Malleus Key, rallying his forces (and the captured Caleb and Beau) while delivering a speech. During the process Fearne tried to use her magical ring to take some piece of the Malleus Key, but it was too well assembled. As part of the ritual that was happening, all of the ruidusborn present, including Imogen and Fearne, began to glow with reddish light, and shortly after, the Voice of the Tempest arrived, being immediately ambushed by Otohan Thull; Orym was trying to defend his leader by destroying the device that allowed the leader of Paragon's Call to summon her echoes, and in an attempt to help, both Fearne and Little Mister shot fire to that same machine, but they missed.
After the Malleus Key activated, Bells Hells were sent far away, and Fearne (no longer emitting glowing red mist), Chetney, FCG and Imogen appeared in the Crystalsands Tundra, near Uthodurn.
Arc 3: Separations and Explorations[]
After failing to contact Orym, Ashton and Laudna (about which Fearne expressed great concern, fearing the worst), the party decided to head to Uthodurn to avoid the cold and get help; the druid (for whom the trek through the snow proved exhausting) helped by bringing some heat with her Produce Flame, and, at dusk, she used her Wild Shape to turn into a giant showbill and bring FCG quickly to a cave in which to take refuge. However, that place turned out to be the lair of a frost salamander that attacked them; they confronted it (receiving the unexpected help of two travelers) and Fearne dealt the final blow to the monster with three Scorching Rays to its eyes and mouth.[113]
The new arrivals were FRIDA, an aeormaton gunslinger, and Deanna Leimert, a gnome cleric of Pelor and Chetney's former lover, but despite that, both of them took a liking to the faun druid from the beginning. They started traveling together, and the following day Fearne helped the group by casting Pass without Trace; later, during a conversation with Imogen about the events around the Malleus Key, they both admitted the strange fateful feelings that the red energy surrounding them had caused. That evening, following the druid's advice, the sorcerer tried to locate the rest of Bells Hells in her dreams (with Fearne and FCG accompanying her thanks to the Shared Dream spell). Ruidus's dream energy drew them to the point where the Malleus Key had been activated and where it still remained, with its red beam anchoring Ruidus in the sky as it broke through little by little the barrier that surrounded it; since that energy seemed to captivate Imogen in a dangerous way Fearne, after waking up first, forced the sorcerer to wake up too by slapping her, showing concern for what would happen if her friend came into contact with that strange energy. Since Chetney, in his wolf form, had entered the forest and FRIDA had followed him, Fearne and the rest of the group went looking for them, finding the tall aeormaton injured by the werewolf's claws and teeth.
Chetney eventually returned the next morning, showing sincere concern about what had happened, and Fearne joked by briefly making him believe he had bitten her the night before. The group continued making their way, and they finally reached Uthodurn; before entering they encountered several goats, and the faun started petting them, being noticed by some locals, who had never seen someone like her. Inside the city they discovered that the people there were nervous because magic wasn't working properly, and the streets were darker than usual. This worried Imogen a lot, and she started thinking about what would happen if Laudna was in danger (having been resurrected by arcane means), so Fearne hugged her to make her feel better. The adventurers visited the Vellum Steeple Archive, where the druid presented herself as a professor, learning that not only communication magic was being altered, but also transportation magic, scrying magic, as well as very old enchantments that they thought to be permanent. Later, when a beast attack happened in the Grand Disk, FCG led them inside to fight the animal, and Fearne helped them move using her Pass without Trace. They followed the bull until they reached the throne room of the dual monarchs, and, after they fought a bit and Fearne was hit once (being protected thanks to her Gloomscale Breastplate), they ended up calming the creature, who was called Umudara. The faun's Dominate Beast helped stop the attacks, and from that she started petting him while they were trying to communicate with him. Once they determined Umudara wanted to return home, the party accompanied him to the surface, making sure he wasn't attacked again by the authorities of Uthodurn; to help with that, Fearne tied a ribbon around the bull's neck to make him look less aggressive. Once they were outside the city, the druid tied a ribbon in Umudara's horn as a parting gift, and the Sentinel Beast left in the direction they told him the Veluthil Forest was.
After receiving the general admiration of the people of Uthodurn, as well as an invitation to meet the dual monarchs the next day, Bells Hells retired to Deanna's house for the night, and after deciding who would sleep with whom, they went to bed, with Fearne starting a short pillow fight before they all fell asleep. The next morning, after breakfast (during which the druid tried to take a jewel FCG was about to eat, being dissuaded by FRIDA), they decided to visit Chetney's old working place, now called D&O Toy Emporium, and discovered that Oltgar Dradegon and his new partner, Drixlitch Ovana, had a problem due to some pymon firebugs. Bells Hells agreed to help them, and before Drixlitch left Fearne helped FRIDA stealing his keys. Inside the shop, Fearne supported Chetney's feelings by stating the toys there weren't good enough for her to steal. When they found the firebugs the druid initially attempted a creative application of the Air Bubble spell to trap the bugs, but she failed, starting a battle in which she cast Snare to create butterfly nets to trap them; later, when they found Drixlitch's pet craskkalid, now in its monstrous adult form, Fearne and Little Mister attacked it with fire, but shortly after she ended the fight by Polymorphing it into an adorable larva. After petting it for a bit and considering leaving the bug there (so it would transform back into its adult form when Drixlitch was around), Fearne ended up taking it with her outside of Uthodurn and dropping it down a cliff; when the Polymorph ended the craskkalid immediately tried to chase her, so she ran to the city as the glassblades killed it. When she returned to her friends, the group had been talking to Oltgar about the shady deals Drixlitch had involving child labor and the dwarf's eventual early death, and at Chetney's request, the druid burnt the desk the papers were in, so Drixlitch wouldn't know they had evidence against him.
Before the meeting with the dual monarchs Fearne took an interest in the jewels adorning the beard of Lord Desavon Kamash, a local noble, and she managed to distract him enough to take a very valuable ring from it. During the following meeting, after being rewarded, Bells Hells shared their information about the solstice and Ludinus Da'leth. Fearne noticed that Imathan reacted to the name and inquired how he knew the archmage, which led to a conversation about Molaesmyr and the idea to visit its ruins to investigate; before they left the druid also asked about a temple of the Wildmother nearby.
At Catlyn's Clothier Fearne updated her outfit, and she additionally asked Deanna to knit her something. When noticing FRIDA and FCG's behavior with each other the druid immediately assumed they had been on a date, and asked them about it. When they returned to Deanna's home Fearne gave an excuse to go out again, and traveled to the garden dedicated to the Wildmother just outside town. There, the slightly drunken faun prayed to the goddess, unsure about the whole process, but asking her to contact Orym and let him know that she and the others were safe; when only the wind answered, Fearne returned to the house. Since Chetney was alone on the couch, she woke him, saying, "If you don't make a move on that woman [Deanna], I'm going to." The next day the adventurers got flot goats to travel through the mountains, and Fearne chose a red and very round specimen that she named Donnie Boy, promising the overfed goat that it would exercise.[114]
Fearne and her friends successfully traversed the Flotket Alps (she even helped stop a frost giant attack) and reached the Boreal Omen River. Facing the plan of building a raft to reach the Savalirwood sooner, Fearne used her Speak with Animals spell to check with her goat, confirming that the animals wouldn't mind traveling that way; after that the faun used her Stonky's Ring to carry some wood. The next morning, however, they realized the flot goats were too big to travel with them in the raft, and although Deanna killed Jerry and the others were willing to leave their mounts behind, Fearne didn't want to abandon Donnie Boy; she ended up accepting it and talking to the animal, convincing it to stay in that area with the rest of the goats so the adventurers could pick them up on their way back to Uthodurn.
Bells Hells left aboard the raft, with Fearne helping guide it using her staff; when they were already in the Savalirwood they approached a bog wretch and a group of pixies, and ended up fighting, killing the bigger monster and scaring the tiny fey away with Deanna's Control Water; during the battle Fearne used Little Mister's assistance, as well as her own magic, to attack their enemies. After the meeting, Fearne used Speak with Animals again to ask one of the fish in the river about the dangers of that area and its inhabitants, receiving a warning about a certain Wolf-King; Fearne wanted to thank the fish for its help with some goat meat, but that prompted the fish to try to swallow her whole arm, so the druid had to wriggle out of its grip. At one point both Deanna and Fearne were weakened by a miasma emitted from cracks in the forest floor (because Chetney didn't warn them in time), but they nonetheless kept pace with the group as they entered the ruins of Molaesmyr; when they were there Fearne cast Pass without Trace to avoid attracting attention to them. In the ruins the group had to fight some ghosts, and although Fearne handled herself well in the fight with assistance from Little Mister, she lost her Past without Trace, recasting it so as not to risk some creature finding her and her friends.
Despite the precautions, Bells Hells had to flee from the fearsome Wolf-King, although in the process they found the Gildhollow Tower and got inside; there, the druid assured her friends that the aesthetics of the place suggested that Ludinus Da'leth had indeed lived there. In the tower the party fought a hatemonger and during the battle Fearne received a lot of damage, being swallowed by the creature at some point, and being protected by FRIDA and Deanna's magic and Chetney's Invisibility spell; later, when the monster was trying to devour Imogen in a similar way, the angry druid saved her friend with her Burning Hands spell. After leaving the tower, Fearne led the group trying to leave the city, protected by her Pass without Trace spell, but even with that they ended up escaping from the Wolf-King.
Later, back in the forest, Bells Hells inspected the magical bag that used to belong to Ludinus, and Fearne took an interest in a harness that used to belong to the archmage, stating her interest in wearing it. When Deanna walked away from the group (distraught over her concern for her friends) and Chetney went to comfort her, the two gnomes ended up flirting, with Deanna hinting out loud that she wanted Fearne in on it. Initially the faun went there and slapped Chetney, demanding that he go with the cleric, but when Deanna clarified that she really wanted Fearne to go with them, she agreed, and the three of them shared a passionate night in the woods.
After deciding that they should go to Jrusar next, the whole group (using the Staff of Dark Odyssey held by Imogen, at Fearne's insistence) Teleported.
After magical damage Team Wildemount appeared in a mountain (still in the same continent), being immediately attacked by birdfolk. Despite the initial aggression Fearne helped calling their attention so they could be convinced that the adventurers were there only by accident; however, she did fail to convince them to fly her and her friends to Jrusar, being left instead in a forest down the mountain. The following morning the group successfully Teleported to Jrusar (Fearne helped by playing her flute so Imogen wouldn't be so nervous). In the Marquesian city the group took a brumeskipper to go to the Core Spire, and the druid turned into a raccoon dog to fit in that space; later, in the Spite by Fire Inn, she used that same animal form to approach a table full of foreign soldiers and listen to their plans in Marquet.
When both halves of Bells Hells reunited Orym immediately ran to hug Fearne, and the group started exchanging anecdotes and information. The faun recognized Deni$e's name when she was mentioned; she also managed to steal Ashton's new ring, which caused their genuine amusement; the fey woman also told Prism that a store in Jrusar (the Prism Emporium) was probably named after her (the shadow elf didn't quite believe it, but she still wanted to visit it).
Eventually it was decided that Prism, Deanna and FRIDA would go on their own research mission to find useful information for Bells Hells, who would return to the Tishtan excavation site. The group exchanged farewells, during which Deanna cast Death Ward on Fearne and told her she loved her.
Once the seven original members of Bells Hells were left alone, Fearne mentioned to Ashton that she had a corset for them, and the group continued to share the information and discoveries they had made on their respective trips; however, Laudna was particularly irritated by how apparently enjoyable Team Wildemount's adventure had been, complaining about it. Seeing that the warlock urgently needed to relax a bit, the party agreed to put off their plans until the next morning and take the rest of the day to rest and make preparations. Fearne, Chetney and Orym went to the Dayal Hall to speak with Ajit in order to get information about the current situation in Jrusar, and also ask him some question about their own discoveries; when they arrived Fearne whispered the students that they wouldn't need all the mathematics they were learning, and when talking to their teacher, she asked how he was doing (since Ajit seemed tired); when they were leaving a child asked her why she was furrym to which she responded by asking why they were so hairless.
Once they left, the three adventurers decided to visit the temple of the Duskmaven in the Smolder Spire (Fearne had asked for its location) to check how the clergy was doing during the solstice, but before they arrived, Chetney started following a captivating scent that made him lose control, running wild until he reached an alley where a dwarf trapped him in a silver net that restrained and hurt the lycanthrope. Fearne and Orym fought to free him, with the former attacking the bounty hunter, grabbing the net and casting Stoneskin on the gnome, and later using Little Mister's Fiery Teleportation to take Chetney out of the silver trap; eventually the dwarf ran away.
Once that conflict ended, they continued their way to the temple, and when they reached it, one of the priests talked to them; Fearne asked her about the name of the goddess of fate (her follower answered that no one alive remembered it), and when they were invited to drink from a waterfall inside the building, the faun made several mentions to "feed the root" (something mentioned in the journals found in Ludinus Da'leth's tower), although the priest didn't react to them. The water caused the three adventurers to enter a state of meditation during which the Duskmaven sent them a vision of the Malleus Key, still working, and the Champion of Ravens screaming inside his spherical prison. Once the vision was over, the priest told them that they would need faith to succeed in their mission, and before leaving, asked if they were allowed to take some of the water (they were not).
When Fearne, Orym and Chetney returned with their friends the former complimented Laudna's outfit, and they told the rest of Bells Hells about their incident with the dwarf and the new information they had collected, including the vision, and argued about how important faith was in their mission; Fearne talked about how she had prayed to Melora to contact Orym, without success. Later the druid and FCG cast Scrying at the same time to find Ludinus and Liliana, and the cleric succeeded (since his target wasn't protected like the archmage), locating them on the surface of Ruidus; Laudna asked Fearne if, as a Ruidusborn, she had had any special feeling during the solstice, but she hadn't. The group had to stay one extra day, during which Fearne cast Scrying again, this time to locate Ira Wendagoth, who was also on Ruidus, interacting with a reilora. The following morning Bells Hells Teleported to Zephrah.
When they arrived in Orym's village they were brought to a very weakened Keyleth, who asked them for their help healing her wounds (by fetching a special flower in the Grey Valley). When they left, Imogen commented to Fearne that the archdruid's home felt like the antithesis of Nana Morri's Ligament Manor, and she agreed; while talking to Orym's sister-in-law, Leeta, Fearne noticed she was nervous, and asked the half-elf if there was anyone she didn't trust in Zephrah, to which the Master of Defense replied that she preferred not to obsess over it. When the group visited Orym's mom, Alma, she was very glad to see Fearne again, and when FCG told the druid not to steal from the halfling, she said she wouldn't steal Alma's stuff. She later asked the midwife if she had ever helped bring Ruidusborn children into the world, and she confirmed that the Ashari tried to time births so they didn't coincide with the red moon flares; when Alma offered the group to stay at her home while they were in town, Fearne accepted, despite being one of the tallest adventurers inside the halfling-sized house.
When Orym's sister-in-law, Maeve, sent Bells Hells to the Grey Valley with her magic, FCG Enhanced Fearne's Wisdom so she could help the group while they were looking for the flowers. When they finally found them, they were attacked by several undead and a devourer-like demon. Fearne, accompanied by Little Mister, cast Aura of Life to prevent her friends from being weakened by the necrotic energy of the enemies; she briefly tried to speak with the demon in Infernal (it didn't work, and the creature responded telepathically in Abyssal), and later cast Daylight, irritating the fiend and its minions. Although Fearne kept her concentration when the devourer attacked, she ended up falling unconscious after one of the wights hit her with its sword; FCG healed her a few seconds later, and he and Imogen made sure no other creature would attack their friend for the rest of the fight.[115]
As Bells Hells traveled through the valley they spotted a structure within a cloven hill. Fearne fruitlessly rummaged through her belongings for the spyglass she had stolen from Xandis, and Orym eventually confessed that he had secretly returned it. Although the druid said that she admired that Orym had managed to steal something from her, in retaliation she only pretended to assist him with Guidance when he was scanning the terrain.[116] Later, when the party encountered some vrocks, Fearne hit one of them with her Burning Hands, singeing Chetney a little in the process (although he had given his approval). Bells Hells (with the help of Fearne's Pass without Trace) reached the Iridon Bastion, a fort controlled by followers of Bahamut that had recently been attacked by demons. As a distraction, Fearne screamed while pretending to be attacked by Chetney in his lupine form. She then tracked down Teven Klask, a devil she had noticed earlier who seemed to be attacking demons as well, and convinced him to collaborate with them. During combat the druid used the assistance of Little Mister and her own fire magic, combined with her Wild Shape (she transformed into a giant shoebill to bring FCG to Imogen) and the Blight spell, with which she managed to defeat the leader of the demons, Extovass the Gluttonous, who swore revenge before being destroyed.
After the battle Teven interacted almost exclusively with Fearne (believing her to be the leader of her group), revealing himself as a champion of Asmodeus who was also trying to prevent Predathos from being released. Fearne was very attracted to the winged warrior and asked him about his god. After some flirtation, the two forged a pact in which Teven would come to the aid of the fey adventurer if she was willing to serve the Lord of the Nine Hells. He kissed her hand, leaving a mark with the symbol of his patron.[117]
The following day Fearne cast Pass without Trace to move through the Grey Valley with the rescued Ashari and the two survivors from the Iridon Bastion, and when they were going to Teleport back to Zephrah with all of them, she was one of the members of the team that went inside the portable whole so that Imogen had less people to bring with the spell. After Keyleth successfully recovered she talked with Bells Hells in private about their future plans against Ludinus and Predathos, and during that conversation, after mentioning Teven, Fearne wondered if divine champions were somehow an important part of the plans, and what would happen if the Red End and its allies gained access to all of them. She also noticed that the Voice of the Tempest had some history with the Raven Queen, and mentioned that Ludinus was obsessed with the goddess of death. When the seven friends were mentioning their connections they joked about the faun being Teven's "wife", and she immediately brushed it off, since she hadn't gotten that far with the devil.
Fearne and FCG accompanied Orym to visit his mother-in-law and pay their respects at the graves of Derrig and Will. During the visit, Fearne was polite (and pleased when Nel noticed that she was from the Feywild), but when she heard Orym tell his late husband that he hoped to meet him again, she was quick to clarify that there was no hurry; as they left the memorial platform, the halfling made it clear how much he appreciated his friends' presence, climbing on the faun's shoulders, who told him that she loved him a lot and felt sorry for his loss. Around that time Chetney, who was flying using a skysail, used the Horn of Silent Alarm and Fearne was the target of the sound, so she complained. Later, when Bells Hells were partying, the druid praised Ashton's newly discovered connection with the titans, since that made them even more interesting; later, when they went to Alma's house, the faun asked for muffins before Scrying on Dancer, revealing she was in Yios.
The following day the group traveled with Keyleth to the City of Flowing Light, where Fearne was able to guide them to the area where she had seen Dancer; later, when they were looking for a tree to go to Bassuras with the inventor, they were attacked by Shithead. The wildfire druid killed it with Scorching Ray, and when it rose again she grabbed it and used Speak with Animals to interrogate it, learning its true name, "Gargo", as well as its inability to die, since its previous master had been long gone. Shortly after that the bird got free and tried to attack FCG, being destroyed by his Turn Undead ability. When some guards approached the group to ask them what they were doing near de Aydinlan Seminary, Fearne told them she was a professor there, although they didn't believe her.
After the group traveled to Bassuras, they went to Imahara Joe's, discovering Joe and his friend Verna being held by General Ratanish and six members of Paragon's Call. A battle ensued and although Fearne was attacked several times she was assisted by her friends and Little Mister, as well as her Gloomscale Breastplate, and she managed to Charm a dragonborn enemy. When Bells Hells killed Ratanish when he returned to the Material Plane (he had been Banished by FCG), the faun and her elemental monkey attacked him with fire. After that, the mercenaries' bodies were looted (Fearne and Laudna took some bone trinkets from the desert warden druid), and when they left the shop the druid cast Pass without Trace to hide the group. Later, Fearne got the chance to speak with Verna, who like her had come to the Fey Realm, and she had in fact met the faun's mother (Fearne considered visiting the Calloway Layaway while they were in town, but it was too far away). While most of the group was discussing the harness and its properties in Hondir's abandoned home, Fearne praised Percival de Rolo when he was mentioned as a potential ally to fix the device (since he had made a gun for her "son" Mister); later, when it was mentioned that the harness worked better when the user and their target shared a similar nature, it was suggested that Fearne could use it to absorb her Nana's energy, but she didn't seem too enthusiastic about it.
After Keyleth sent them to Slival, Fearne helped Bells Hells move without being noticed, using her Pass without Trace spell; moreover, when they were trying to find a place to sleep, she creatively cast Plant Growth to create a natural tent for them. The following morning, following the petition of the dolabos that FCG had met during their watch, the adventurers went to a volcanic hill to lit a bonfire. When the tiny creatures noticed Fearne's connection to fire, she indulged them by summoning Little Mister, and casting Produce Flame (confirming the dolabos' fascination with fire). The faun let Laudna handle the bonfire, resuming her role as her fire magic teacher, complimenting her casting and assisting her by keeping the flames active. Bells Hells briefly fought Bari Mondolo, attracted by the fire, until it was scared away by Toriz and Jirana; Fearne was particularly impressed by the former, petting it for a bit; later, since the druid had liked the old galapa as well, she gave her some salt and pepper shakers she had stolen a while ago.[118]
After Jirana and Toriz brought Bells Hells to the shore, FCG cast Speak with Dead twice so Imogen (disguised as her mother) could interrogate the desert warden druid and General Ratanish, and while the latter was answering the questions Fearne noticed he had realized Liliana wasn't there, so she told her friend; when they were done with that Fearne took two of the goliath's molars. When they summoned Captain Urlu Novos and his ghost ship, he ended up being more agressive than expected, and a battle ensued. Fearne used Little Mister and her Fire Shield spell in battle, and also tried to help Laudna after she was affected by FCG's Turn Undead ability; however, the cleric was badly hurt by the crew of the Crimson Abyss, falling unconscious twice, and the druid healed him, although showing her displeasure because his abilities had affected Laudna. Later the faun admitted that although she had considered not healing the aeormaton, she had felt guilty. When the adventurers managed to struck a deal with Novos, starting their three day journey to Kalutha, Fearne explored the area below deck, particularly interested in finding the captain's quarters.[119]
During the days they were on board Fearne focused on becoming close to Captain Novos, convincing him to let her sleep in his quarters, much to the chagrin of Cyrillia, jealous of said closeness. Privately, Fearne tried to convince Urlu to give Graz'tchar to her (unsuccessfully), and the two ended up spooning, with the faun agreeing to share some of her warmth with the undead privateer (which made him warmer in the most literal sense). Cyrillia noticed this, and was furious with Fearne, and very willing to attack her. However, the druid (with some telepathic assistance from Imogen) convinced the navigator that she should use her own elemental charms (as a fire genasi skeleton) to approach Captain Novos herself, which she did, with great results. In the party before leaving the Crimson Abyss Fearne played her panflute to cheer the crew (although she yelled at one of them when they didn't use Kyle's name), and by the end of it, while saying goodbye, the druid tried (and failed) to ask for the sentient sword again, and when Cyrillia thanked her for her help she kissed her bony hand.
Inside a cave in the new island Bells Hells were attacked by a basalt caecilian, and after using Daylight to provide better visibility for her friends, Fearne used her fire magic and Mister's help to attack the monster.[120] While searching for the Great Tree of Atrophy Fearne helped guide the group (with assistance from Chetney), and as they crossed a river she used her magical ring to telekinetically move Laudna and Ashton out of the water. During the night she used Plant Growth again to create a shelter for the party. The next day, when they finally found the dark sinkhole where Evontra'vir was, Fearne suggested jumping, and the team ended up listening to the druid, who descended transformed into a shoebill. Before speaking with the Tree, the faun cast Guidance to help Ashton, but she remained silent while the barbarian and the rest of Bells Hells spoke with the former Gau Drashari.[121]
After the adventurers were sent to Athos Peak in the island of Igthuldus, they found a crack in the mountain, and Fearne transformed into a tiny snow bat in order to access it and move inside it more easily; she acted as a scout, using Imogen's mental connection to inform the rest of the group of what was ahead. Eventually, when they found the Chynes Maw and the local magma mephits (talking to Fearne thanks to FCG's Tongues spell) told them that the spark of Rau'shan was inside their pool of lava, Ashton jumped in, followed shortly after by the druid, who used her Fire Shield to protect herself from the heat; together, they managed to take the elemental relic out of the pool (destroying the mephits in the process). Bells Hells started debating about what to do with the spark, and if Ashton would use it; although Fearne initially rejected the artifact (since it was hot and it hurt her), her friends were considering that she should be the one to use it, since Ashton could die if they combined it with their shard of Ka'Mort. Shortly after, Ludinus and his allies appeared, and he used Telekinesis to take the faun as a hostage. A battle ensued, during which the adventurers tried to free her friend, while she (after failing to distract Ludinus with a Wall of Stone) tried talking to her captor, to no avail. Eventually Fearne was freed and Ludinus revealed to be a Simulacrum, melting in the magma pool; Fearne took from it a cracked opal that the archmage's copy had been wearing in the forehead.[122]
Arc 4[]
After Bells Hells Teleported to Whitestone they went to Percy's workshop in Whitestone Castle, retrieving the newly repaired Quintessence Array, and after confirming it worked, they talked about how they could use it with the spark of Rau'shan; there was a general agreement about the danger of letting Ashton absorb it, so Fearne became the preferred candidate. The faun was okay with it, and willing to help the genasi activate his own shard of primordial titan, although she seemed slightly confused when he said he had always wanted a sister. In the following meeting in the war room, Bells Hells offered to do a scouting mission to Ruidus, and Fearne expressed she wanted to make sure the world her child (referring to Little Mister) would live in did not become horrible because of Ludinus and his plans. The adventurers then talked briefly about seeking allies among the followers of the Betrayer Gods, and the druid considered calling Teven Klask.
Later, Bells Hells talked with Gwendolyn de Rolo, but the child became frightened after touching Laudna and left. Laudna, Imogen, and Fearne followed her, although they failed to convince her to come out of her room; before they left, Fearne decided to leave her Eyes of Charming as a gift for the young tiefling to have fun with, which she accepted. That night, the three witches met to help Laudna stealthily explore the castle (thanks to Fearne's Pass without Trace), eventually finding a room with a secret door. Although the passage had been blocked with bricks, the druid was able to create an opening with Stone Shape, and the three friends descended into an abandoned laboratory where they were attacked by three specters; the faun helped her friends using Mister and her own magic, and illuminating the entire room with Daylight. After the fight, Delilah spoke audibly to all three, commenting that fate was fickle. When Fearne told her she didn't think fate was fickle, the archmage noticed she was marked by powers of many realms, and mentioned that maybe she would need to become a darker version of herself to succeed in her endeavors (which the druid didn't like, so she threatened to kill Delilah again). Fearne then acted as a witness as Imogen promised to Laudna to help her if Delilah took control again (it was then when the fey realized the two of them were dating), after which they returned to their rooms, with Fearne setting the place on fire before they left.
In the morning, Orym woke up quite cheery, and expressed to Fearne how glad he was to have her in her life, giving her a surprise present: the spyglass he had stolen from Cyrillia; she then confessed that she had been petty denying him some Guidance as revenge for him stealing her previous spyglass (which belonged to Xandis), but he didn't give it importance. Later she and Ashton went to visit the Heart of Whitestone. There they had a candid conversation, during which the barbarian confessed his attraction to her, and also his trust, asking her to defend his decisions if it was necessary during their future challenges; the faun agreed, and ran away after admitting she found the genasi attractive too.
That same day, after a meeting, Bells Hells went to the ziggurat under the castle to use the harness in a controlled environment, believing that Fearne was about to absorb the power of Rau'shan. However, Ashton did it instead, after tricking the others to briefly leave them alone, and kissing Fearne. After some seconds it became evident that the elemental power of the Emperor was too much, and it started destroying the genasi's body. Fearne combined Aura of Life with other healing spells as the party all battled to maintain their friend alive and whole. Eventually Ashton's body recovered, accepting the new power inside of it (and leaving him with a new volcanic-looking arm); the barbarian was relieved, but his friends were extremely angry for his recklessness, and Fearne even kicked him in the head with her hoof.[123] Immediately after that there was some discussion, and the druid, feeling furious and guilty, hit Ashton with their hammer, then tried to break the weapon itself while screaming, before finally storming off with the Quintessence Array. Chetney followed her and talked to her, listening to her explanation of what had happened, as well as her fears and regrets, and removing the harness out of her hands so that she would not destroy it in another fit of rage. The old gnome shared with her his own interest in seeing her grow stronger, but finally offered her a way to vent: they started breaking stained glass windows in the castle together.
After that, a little more relaxed, Fearne decided to go for a walk (after promising she wouldn't just leave the party), and visited the Altar of the Raven (paying respects to the statue of the Champion of Ravens first, and telling him they were trying to rescue him), leaving her postcards as an offering, since they were important to her but they didn't mean what she thought anymore. The faun prayed to the goddess of fate for guidance, as she feared that if she gained more power she would end up becoming a dark version of herself that she did not want. When she left the temple she saw a family of ravens: an adolescent one with one leg and its two parents, who fed it and stared at the druid for a bit, before the three of them left. After that she went to the Parchwood Timberlands and decided to sleep there, surrounded by nature, recreating her room in Ligament Manor using Plant Growth. In the morning she destroyed it and returned to the castle, where Bells Hells had a somewhat tense reconciliation. To help (and to fulfill her wish to visit her grandma), Fearne proposed to make a short retreat going to Nana Morri's home and asking her to alter time for them, so that they could recover from their recent trauma without losing time in the Material Plane. Her friends agreed, so they, along with Allura, traveled to the Fey Realm. There, Fearne reunited not only with the Fatestitcher, but also with her parents, who were visiting too. Morrigan agreed to help the adventurers, and talked to Fearne about her concerns, revealing to her that even as a child she had felt her fate's potential, and telling her she should ask Birdie about her origins; she also advised her that Teven's mark on her hand granted an audience with a devil who had had eons to perfect the art of deals.[124]
Fearne talked with her mother almost immediately (greeting Dr. Nesbitt in the process), and after some hesitation, Birdie revealed that the druid's biological father was Athion Zathuda. She explained her past infatuation with him and his insistance that Fearne be born under Ruidus's light in Exandria. She stressed that Oleander had chosen to care for Fearne and raise her as his own, to which the younger faun replied that neither of the Calloways had really raised her. Despite the initial tension, the conversation led to Fearne becoming closer with her mother. After that, she announced her true parentage to the rest of the group, and along with Allura and Nana Morri, they had a conversation about the faun's connections and her potential if she were to absorb the power of Rau'shan, during which Allura commented how illogical the Fey Realm was compared to Exandria, and the Fearne sarcastically replied that the Material Plane was always perfectly logical and normal. During the team-building exercises organized by Fresh Cut Grass and the Fatestitcher, specifically in the phase about honesty, Fearne confessed that she thought they were going to fail in their mission; she also revealed that she does "stuff" to her friends while they sleep. She, Chetney, and Laudna guided Imogen, and she and Imogen guided Ashton during the phase about communication (and she looked particularly offended when Nana closed her lips with magic to make sure she didn't help guide Orym in the final challenge too).[125] In the phase about trust she used her magic to clear the terrain (burning the vegetation and sinking stone ruins) while looking for ivory branches and dealing with the suspicions of her friends, who thought there were doppelgangers among them; although at some point she herself prepared to cast spells against whoever behaved wrongly, they all ended up trusting each other, and successfully completed the task.
After the trials Bells Hells asked Fearne about the shard, and she decided she was ready to take it, stating that she wasn't afraid of her potential destiny. At Morri's suggestion they (as well as Allura and a great audience of critters) went to the garden, and after some preparation (giving Fearne magical boons and items to resist the process), the Quintessence Array began to absorb the spark of Rau'shan. The faun took a lot of damage, but with her friends' help she managed to survive, having a vision of the Emperor of Fire accepting her as his legacy, and having a physical transformation, manifesting some fire-like traits, and causing a very happy and enthusiastic reaction from Little Mister. After that, following the rest of Bells Hells' advice, Fearne and Ashton shook hands, making his own elemental shard react, granting him his own benefits, and making both adventurers extremely excited.[126]
Fearne and Ashton left for a while, running around and playing with their new powers, with the druid being particularly proud of her new abilities. Eventually both of them changed back to their less elemental-like forms, they hugged, she returned his ring, and more comfortable around each other, they returned together to Ligament Manor. There, Fearne approved the deal Chetney had made with her Nana, although she warned him to keep his word to avoid potential punishments. Later, when FCG cast Shared Dream to bring Bells Hells to Imogen's dream in Ruidus, Chetney and Fearne stayed awake for the spell's duration, and the latter focused on creating a relaxing environment for Imogen to fall asleep. The following morning Fearne had a small reunion with many of her animal companions in the manor, giving them permission to use her room, but only if they shared (since Dr. Nesbitt wanted it for himself). Fearne talked to her parents and was praised for her new powers that apparently had given her a reputation in the nearby swamps already. After exchanging promises to spend more time together in the future, the Calloways said goodbye to their daughter. Bells Hells returned to Exandria with Allura (the very same day they had left) and met with Percy de Rolo, Keyleth, and others allied against the Ruby Vanguard. One of them, Earthbreaker Groon, noticed that Imogen and Fearne were both Ruidusborn (expressing it only when the faun asked about his interest in them), but declared he trusted them. The adventuring party left with Keyleth to get closer to the Malleus Key, and after Fearne cast Pass without Trace, Orym helped her find their way to their destination.[127]
When they arrived at the ruins, the adventurers tried to interfere with their enemies' plans on the way to Bloody Bridge, fighting some reilora in the process. During one of the encounters, Fearne managed to Charm the two Ruidian warriors, who were killed by her friends shortly after. Later, when Imogen started producing red mist while casting magic near the Malleus Key, Fearne recognized that effect (making sure Laudna, as the sorcerer's girlfriend, was aware of it), and noticed that she was producing some mist herself. After Chetney barely survived the effects of a petrification glyph he gave his bag of holding to the druid so it wouldn't be with him if it happened again. When they were closer to the Malleus Key and its red beam, the adventurers used a diversion, knowing people in the excavation were increasingly alert, and Fearne and Laudna helped detonate two bombs Imogen Catapulted into the air.
A brief battle with reilora and members of the Vanguard ensued, during which the members of Bells Hells touched the Bloody Bridge one by one. During it, Fearne Polymorphed a juggernaut into a possum, noticing in the process how the power of Rau'shan inside of her was reacting to the red energy of the bridge, and after doubting whether she should take the marsupial with her to Ruidus (doubts that the Polymorphed enemy resolved by biting her), Ashton grabbed the faun and Orym and threw them into the red beam before following them (and being followed, ironically, by the possum, still bent on attacking Fearne). Eventually the entire group reached the Moon of Ill Omen,[128] and to deal with the Polymorphed juggernaut FCG put it in the bag of holding, after which Fearne stopped concentrating on the spell.
The adventurers spent some time trying to avoid the enemies in the area, and Fearne helped by casting Pass without Trace and having Little Mister ready for action (although despite their efforts they were attacked and she got hurt anyway). Eventually Bells Hells turned into clouds to fly above the surface of the red moon, spending some time moving with a herd of buffalo-like creatures that fascinated Fearne until the party found a cave to hide in. There, Imogen realized that she and Fearne were connected by a faint ethereal tether and there was a slight feeling pulling them in the same direction. Imogen then realized that she had acquired a new power allowing her to share sorcery points and spell slots with other Ruidusborn such as Fearne, which excited both Fearne and Imogen, although they tried to make Laudna feel included, as their third witch; during that conversation Fearne also wondered about her own condition and power as a Ruidusborn, since she had been made "by design" according to the wishes of her father. Shortly after, when Imogen was resisting the God Eater's will, Fearne noticed that before her friend returned to consciousness, her markings shone and the feeling of connection between them felt stronger for an instant.[129]
When the adventurers arrived in the village of Razora, they were discovered by one of the local bormodos, Dono. In order to gain his trust, Fearne Druidcrafted a flower for him that Kaniey (his cytaa companion) promptly ate. Dono introduced them to the local Elder Barthie, but they were interrupted by the attack of Willmaster Edmuda and her allies. During the ensuing battle, Fearne cast Charm Person on the reiloran leader; however, because of the intensity of combat she wasn't able to get any benefit from it. She then focused on attacking the other enemies, summoning Mister and using Scorching Ray to hit several people, killing one of them.[130]
The adventurers took Edmuda, Petrov Godo and Verdo in order to interrogate them, and after using the Quintessence Array to leave Edmuda powerless for a day (something that concerned Fearne and FCG a bit knowing how Ludinus used it in the past), the group started interrogating her and the other two prisoners: although they had to use Dominate Person to force the Willmaster to collaborate, they were able to gain the trust of the two young Vanguard recruits, convincing them that Edmuda was a dangerous traitor but that they would be ok. After FCG healed Verdo a bit and Fearne did the same with Petrov, the two adventurers escorted them to the caravan, since Bells Hells were planning on infiltrating as members of the Vanguard themselves. However, when they arrived they discovered that Otohan was there, looking for Imogen. Fearne and FCG tried to flee, but the Legend of the Peaks spotted them and threatened them, asking questions. The druid tried playing dumb and then gaining them some time, by suggesting that Imogen was in Kreviris, and that maybe Thull had been tracking Fearne instead. She, recognizing the faun as a relevant Ruidusborn, decided to spare her, but prepared to kill FCG, who luckily used a powerful Banishment to send Fearne and himself to a harmless demi-plane, where they stayed for a minute turning into clouds. When they reappeared Otohan's echoes were waiting for them, but despite being attacked, the now-misty adventurers managed to flee, too fast for the Psi Warrior to reach. Fearne and FCG returned with Bells Hells and they all left Razora.
The adventurers traveled as fast as they could in cloud form, eventually hiding from a storm in a deep cleft in the ground. There they explored deeper until they found a stream of underground water that led them (with some help from Fearne's Water Breathing) to a waterfall and the ruins of an elven building with gardens still flourishing (some of them producing delicious Goodberries that the druid identified by eating one). They found the remains of the local inhabitants, probably taken away along with the Exandrian land used to form Ruidus. The adventurers got curious about the origin of the fresh water in that place, and in order to investigate Fearne used her Wild Shape to turn into a surprisingly strong leaf sheep sea slug, swimming against the current until she ended up in a lake surrounded by snow and green forest, unable to hear its friends telepathically any longer.[131]
Fearne returned with her friends and explained the situation, and after some debate, during which the witches spoke in favor of taking a risk and the druid gave Imogen some sorcery points by sacrificing one of her spell slots (feeling slightly winded right after), the adventurers went through the portal, following Fearne and Orym, appearing in Lake Umamu near the abandoned village of Ria'Doin; while they were going there Fearne praised Chetney's physical might (since she had known it very intimately), which led to Imogen asking her later if she felt bad because he was no longer pursuing her, although the faun denied it. The adventurers learned that strange things had been happening in the village before it was abandoned, but they decided to rest in one of the houses anyway. During the night, people started behaving strangely, feeling the urge to go outside. The witches, unaffected, tried to stop their friends, following them while they walked into Lake Umamu (although still protected by Fearne's Water Breathing), where a strange entity grabbed them with its tendrils. Fearne went after them, and used the boon Captain Novos had granted her to become resistant to the extreme cold of the water. She also summoned Mister, who despite being extremely uncomfortable in the water went after Fresh Cut Grass, using Fiery Teleportation to bring them closer to the surface.
Eventually the group managed to escape, and since the influence of the undead creature of the lake was too dangerous to stay the rest of the night, Bells Hells decided to return to Ruidus through the portal. The next day the group traveled to Kreviris, sensing its direction thanks to the combined intuition of the two Ruidusborn, and on their way there, a flare made the surface of the red moon warm up and become very bright: both Fearne and Imogen felt euphoria for the duration, and after it was over they even felt a bit healthier. They all continued walking, and when Ashton, who had been using his titan powers, was affected by exhaustion, the druid transformed into a dire wolf to carry them. Eventually they saw the capital of the Imperium in the distance.[132] As they were approaching to the city they encountered a strange furred tadpole, and after learning those creatures were carnivorous, the adventurers decided to be cautious and moved away floating on top of a rock the sorcerer was moving with Telekinesis, reason why Fearne returned to her real form to weight less. Not long after Ruidus flared once more, and the Ruidusborn once again felt ecstatic and revitalized by it.
Bells Hells stopped in one of the outposts of Kreviris, Tyran A, and while they were there Fearne and Imogen (the former Disguised as a Willmaster and Enhanced by FCG's magic) successfully performed psychic ventriloquism, so that every time the faun was contacted by a telepath the human responded mentally as if it were her; despite a brief moment of panic when some reilora focused too much of them, they managed to deceive them all. After meeting a couple of friendly children in the Clutch, a humble neighborhood, they were stopped and interrogated by a group of reilora riding avadons, who started interrogating them; Fearne ended up turning into a fly to leave, but she was immediately trapped inside the mouth of one of the mounts, and combat ensued. The druid cast Scorching Ray inside the avadon's mouth, killing it; she also defended herself from attacks by casting Shield for the first time. The adventurers ended up killing all the enemies and taking a box they were carrying with them, after which they went to the Jagged Edge, meeting with Zhesh and her colleage Jidoh; the former agreed to help them meet a person connected to the Volition. The adventurers then hid in the cellar, where they were planning their next move, until they heard Imperium agents arriving to the Jagged Edge looking for them.[133] They stayed in the cellar, hidden by Laudna's Darkness, as slithers were sent inside to investigate; when one of the monsters began to attack Imogen, Laudna instructed Fearne to replace it with her Wild Shape to buy time, and the faun did so, acting like one of the beasts and pretending to be following a trail so that the patrol and the other animals would follow her. In the streets the slitherlord (the Ruidian commanding the monsters) became impatient when Fearne started behaving in a weird way and hit her several times, but she kept her act going and eventually managed to leave them behind; she tried to return with her friends by burrowing, but she wasn't too familiar with her new form, and got disoriented, needing FCG's telepathic assistance (combined with a Locate Creature spell) to finally reunite with the group. After that the adventurers stayed in the shop for a while, getting new glass gear, and when Orym expressed his interest in paying for a weapon with food, Fearne helped him, Druidcrafting strawberries with him; she also cast Dispel Magic on the box they had stolen, so Chetney could open it, revealing an Aeorian relic.
After they left the group, protected by Fearne's Pass without Trace, went to the Overspoke tower to locate the safe house of the Volition.[134] They were accepted as allies, and they found out that Ira Wendagoth had been there, working with the rebels, and sabotaging an excavation in Vaterra Kreviris overseen by none other than Sorrowlord Athion Zathuda, Fearne's sire. When that was one of the missions Bells Hells could potentially join, they considered it, and Fearne was unsure of what to do, although Chetney spoke in favor of both the faun and Imogen speaking to their respective antagonistic parents if they had the opportunity. The following morning Fearne spoke with Ira, sharing the fact that she was the Sorrowlord's daughter, and asking the inventor what he knew about him and how he planned to confront him. Ira, in turn, spoke of his resentment towards the Unseelie captain and Ludinus, and commented that they had been interested in siring more Ruidusburn, in the hope that some of them would be Exaltants like Imogen; when the Nightmare King suggested that Athion was probably disappointed because Fearne wasn't that special, she retorted by saying that being Ruidusborn wasn't what made her special. The druid also asked him to be more direct and less "fey", and that she would do the same with him, which earned her an skeptical reaction. Later, when Rashinna, the rebel leader, was asking about the missions and their members, Ira commented that Fearne was invested in the detonation mission he led, so she, Ashton and FCG joined; to move easily among enemies, the Nightmare King disguised them with the Seeming spell, making Fearne look like a bormodo, and Little Mister as her cytaa; before they left, the faun asked Orym and Chetney not to take any unnecessary risk.[135]
Relationships[]
The Calloways[]
Fearne's foster grandmother, Morri,[136] (whom Fearne says is extremely intelligent)[137] sent her from the Feywild to Exandria. She passed through a gate and arrived near Syngorn.[138]
Fearne's parents are outcasts. Fearne was told by a dark version of herself that the Archfey Elmenore wanted her back.[53] After the battle that followed, Fearne could feel the displeasure of Elmenore at the dark alter ego's failure.[139]
When Fearne finally met her parents it was revealed that they had been apart longer than they expected, and Fearne acted somewhat cold around them, resenting their absence during her childhood (although she didn't resent Morrigan, since in any case, the hag had been her family regardless of blood ties). However, when the apogee solstice approached and the druid met again with her parents, she decided to act nicely just in case the world ended days later. When she reunited with them in the Feywild, many days later, she was happy to see them, and even after the revelations made there (that Athion Zathuda was her biological sire and Birdie and Ollie had never told her) she was still in good terms with them, and hoping to spend more time with them.
Little Mister[]
Little Mister is Fearne's wildfire spirit, a monkey whose mouth is a gaping furnace, burning anything that he decides to eat.[140] Little Mister is also energetic, especially when he was running with Opal to the docks.[141] Fearne considers Mister her child in a way, and she deliberately let her own parents believe they had a grandchild to make them feel bad, saying she was there for her own (without clarifying it was her wildfire spirit).
Orym[]
Fearne and Orym have contrasting personalities: she with a chaotic fey nature and he soberly making a conscious effort to do good and not screw people over. Despite Orym's worrying about the trouble Fearne will get herself and the party into, they are attentive to each other and get along well.
After Dorian left Marquet Orym remained as Fearne's closest friend (and she did present him to others as her best friend). They both took care of each other, and when he was in danger, she prioritized his well-being.
Ashton Greymoore[]
Ashton and Fearne enjoy each other's mischief. The two have a form of good-natured flirtatious pick-pocketing game going on between each other. Ashton began this game by pickpocketing her when they first met, stealing a large earring of the Allhammer's symbol,[142] which Fearne herself stole from a pachydan priest she met on her first day in Jrusar.[143] She then countered and stole the earring back, offering it to Preio Madali as payment for a bottle of Elvish alcohol.[144] In return, Ashton stole the chamber pot with a flower growing out of it (which she originally lifted from Dugger's house) when she was blinded by electric shock. At some point, she offered to let Ashton drink some of the liquor out of her hair after Bertrand Bell accidentally threw it at her.[145]
Both seem to be interested in each other, with Fearne frequently finding Ashton interesting and beautiful despite their broken appearance. Ashton seems interested in Fearne as well, often finding her eccentric personality and fae lifestyle enchanting. Ashton, despite their intense dislike of physical contact due to their chronic pain, frequently seeks physical connection with Fearne. He is the only person within Bells Hells who pickpockets Fearne, and often seeks her out during moments of levity, as seen during the end of the crawler chase when he called her name and fell within the same hole she had fallen in earlier. This is the most apparent during episode 50, when Ashton hugged Fearne before the two parties disbanded to defeat the malleus key. Ashton hugged Fearne before pickpocketing her. When caught, Fearne asked what he had wanted from her, to which Ashton responded that they had wanted "something personal and irreplaceable". Fearne granted their wish by kissing them on the forehead, with Ashton shyly responding, "well, fuck, now that's just really hard to steal back." Many days later, after a conversation during which Ashton referred to the faun as a potential "sister" she was confused, so he clarified that he didn't mean it, and that he actually considered her very attractive; they had a candid conversation which ended when Fearne called him hot and ran away. That same day, Ashton kissed Fearne (officially stealing her kiss back) before using the Quintessence Array to absorb the elemental power of a titan. This process almost killed them, and although the druid had helped keeping them alive with her magic, when the process was over she kicked their head, angry at the barbarian, and full of regret for letting them almost die trying to take Rau'shan's power. Despite her feelings for Ashton, she was still furious, and the following day she told him that she didn’t like him at the moment for what had happened.
Chetney Pock O'Pea[]
Main article: Relationship between Chetney and Fearne
After their first meeting, Chetney observed that Fearne was the "nice one" of the group.[146] Fearne was excited about Chetney's toy making skills, and asked him to make her something.[147] She was fascinated with Chetney's lycanthropy and mentioned several times that she would also like to be a werewolf.[148][149] After fighting the Shade Mother, Chetney proposed a one-night stand with Fearne, planning to meet in Chetney's room when he howled at 3 AM.[150] Chetney ended up falling asleep, but Fearne woke up at 2:59 AM and waited outside his door.[151] Chetney later described he and Fearne as "two adults just reacting to chemistry", to which Fearne agreed and added that she would probably make her rounds through the whole group.[152] After trading one of her treasures for a wooden music box, Fearne asked Chetney to carve a dedication to her parents into it.[153] While on watch, Fearne told Chetney about a special gem her Nana Morri gave her, and let Chetney inspect it.[154] He later told Fearne that he had made her toy first out of the group, and gave her a small wooden wolf, adding that if she ever wanted to "take a ride on the wild side, the invitation is out there." Fearne told Chetney that the wolf was probably her favorite thing she had.[155]
After meeting Deanna Fearne provoked Chetney into approaching his old fling again under the threat that if he didn't, she would. When the two gnomes eventually reconnected, Deanna requested that Fearne join them for a night of fun in the Savalirwood, and the faun was more than willing.[156] When Fearne was furious and heartbroken after Ashton's near-death experience, it was Chetney who helped her feel better, encouraging her and showing her kindness (without sugarcoating that she had made a mistake).
Ludinus Da'leth[]
After witnessing what the archmage is capable of, Fearne is somewhat scared of him. However, she is also very curious, feeling like if she understood him, she would be able to "fix" him.[157]

Behind the scenes[]
Ashley used several elements as inspiration to create Fearne, including the Skogsrå (a Swedish nymph-like creature that lured people into the forest, revealing there its darker nature and keeping victims from ever leaving),[263] the concept of a dark Disney princess, her experience growing up with her mother (who inspired the character of Nana Morri), and a bit of Jennifer Coolidge and Joan Cusack for her demeanor.[264][265]
Fearne was initially developed as a character concept for Campaign Three and was brought into Exandria Unlimited Prime for further development. Afterward, Ashley had the option to choose another character for the campaign, but she chose to continue playing Fearne. Her stats were then rerolled under the same rules as other characters in Campaign Three and prior campaigns: using the rolled method in the Player's Handbook with a homebrewed rule that if the sum of the scores was less than 70, they could reroll the scores.[266]

- Exandria Unlimited Prime, every episode
- Campaign Three, every episode except:
- "Fight at the Museum..." (3x21) [Laura]

Quotations[]
- "Time is a weird soup." (a repeated phrase)[267][268][269]
- (at the end of Exandria Unlimited Prime) "I had some things that I needed to do, but I think there's still some things that we maybe need to complete. And I don't think I'm ready to leave you all yet. Because thinking about that just makes me very sad. So, let's just keep going."[270]
- (said while looting Bertrand's corpse) "Well, one man's trash."[271]
- "Jazz is chaos, and I don't know how you can't love it."[272]
- "Oh, well, that's where I draw the line. I don't like sharing."[273]
- "Time is a construct that man uses to define change. So be whatever age you want, I guess."[274]
- "It's 112, and that's my age. But I feel about 732."[275]
- "It's just hard when you feel something and the other person doesn't. It just happens. Every time. Always the bridesmaid.[276]
- "I realize I'm not as good at lying as I thought. Which is weird because I do it all the time."[277]
- (a toast) "May the hair in your ears never fall out!"[278]
- "I don't really [steal]... I just borrow for a long time."[279]
- "I think it's a little reckless because it's a little fun."[280]
- (as she dies) "Boy. Well, that was a hell of a run."[281]
- Fearne: (fleeing an ankheg) I'm trying to make my vibrations weird on the sand so that it doesn't... I don't know what I'm doing.
Orym: Your vibes are already pretty weird.[282] - "One man's burden is another man's gift."[283]
- (accepting Teven Klask's bargain) I feel like I'm wanting a little excitement, and I really like what your god's about, like the pleasure thing, and I've really been trying to put like self-care before-- you know, like caring about myself. Pleasure, make it all about me. Let's do it. I'm in.[284]
- "You have this thing here in this realm called guilt, and I really felt it."[285]
Trivia[]
- Her name is likely a variation of the name of the fern plant. The word fern comes from the Old English fearn, which in turn comes from the Proto-Indo-European pornóm, meaning "feather", "wing", "leaf", or simply the fern plant itself.
- According to the co-founder of Eldritch Foundry in a now-deleted post on Reddit, which created the Exandria Unlimited miniatures, Fearne's miniature was redone at least four times to meet requests about the "fullness" of her bosom. By the final result, photos of Christina Hendricks were involved as references. Fearne was also known as "Fergie" at the time.
- Although the official name of Fearne's race is "satyr", she consistently refers to herself as a faun. In mythology, Fauns are virtually the same as satyrs, the main difference being their depiction throughout history. Satyrs were initially shown in Ancient Greece iconography as male nature spirits often portrayed with the ears and tails of horses and an exaggerated erection, and were associated with indecency. Over time, they began to be represented as more goat-like. Fauns were spirits of peace and fertility originating in Ancient Rome who borrowed their appearance from satyrs (and on occasion feminine fauns were also depicted) although their animalistic features were also taken from deer; this can be seen in Fearne's thin legs and deer-like fur patterning. Eventually, however, the differences between the two mythic creatures were blurred, and the terms came to be interchangeable.[286] It's possible that Ashley chose to use the term "faun" because of its association with gentle, foolish spirits.
- Fearne is the first actual satyr character in Critical Role canon. Garmelie, a character in Campaign One, looked like a satyr, but was actually an archfey in disguise.
- Fearne is the first Critical Role player character in a main campaign to have a creature type other than humanoid. However, she's not the first one in canon Critical Role D&D episodes, being preceded by Buddy the ogre played by Liam O'Brien in "The Adventures of the Darrington Brigade" (Sx49).
- According to Chetney, she smells like the taste the colors of the rainbow would have.[287]
- She has a parallelism with Morrighan Ferus, who was born in the Fey Realm but went to Exandria and grew up there, in opposition with Fearne, who was born in the Verdant Expanse but spent most of her life in the Feywild. They were both helped by Morri Calloway too.
- The animation on her Campaign Three stat card is of falling pink flower petals.[13] One of the flowers she wears in her hair, oleander, commonly has pink petals, and Oleander is also the name of Fearne's father.
- Fearne's "innocently mischievous" personality came from Ashley Johnson's mother.[288] According to Ashley, both Matthew Mercer and Aabria Iyengar supplied some of the details around who and what Fearne's grandmother Morri Calloway actually is.[289]
- She was fascinated with braids (cutting several from people in the Material Plane), but nowadays she wouldn't want to steal them as much as she used to.[290]
- According to Ashley, Fearne loves love, but she refused to elaborate when she was asked if the druid had experienced romantic love.[291]
- Fearne's room in Ligament Manor was inspired by Marie Antoinette's room in Versailles.[292]
- Fearne loves to use her Wild Shape to transform into apparently non-useful animals, her favorite being the shoebill.[293]
- Ashley confessed that she wished Fearne had set on fire the papers Ludinus Da'leth was stealing from Kadija Sumal. Matt admitted he had a battle map prepared for that encounter just in case Fearne and/or Imogen decided to act against the archmage.[294]
- According to Taliesin Jaffe, Fearne reminds him of the Joker, one of Batman's most famous villains.[295]
- Fearne, Chetney and Deanna have had the first threesome between player characters in a Critical Role campaign.[296] This is not, however, the first threesome in Critical Role canon, since Caleb Widogast, Astrid Becke and Eadwulf Grieve were in a polyamorous relationship during their time as Trent Ikithon's students;[297] it was also heavily implied that Lucien Tavelle and Brevyn Oakbender had a threesome with a "nubile elf".[298]
- According to Teven Klask, Fearne is "outside the knotted weave".[299] Since in Critical Role fate and destiny are often symbolized or described as threads and strands, this could be a reference to Fearne being a fey entity from beyond the Material Plane, so her own fate might not be completely tied to the destiny of the people around her.
- Although when she met Evontra'vir she had a lot of potential questions, Fearne, having grown up in the Fatestitcher's home, knows that she has to be very careful with destiny when learning about it, although thanks to her grandmother she is also aware that it is possible to alter it a little.[300]
