Fane-Eater is a magic battleaxe used by Arkhan.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Fane-Eater was carved from deeply cerulean sapphire and embellished with numerous runic sigils.[1]

History[]

Tiamat, the Scaled Tyrant, sent Arkhan out on a series of quests to retrieve artifacts. Fane-Eater had belonged to a general of Asmodeus, the Lord of the Hells, and was buried in that general's tomb.[2]

Properties[]

When wielding this item character gains a +3 bonus to attack rolls made with this weapon. When you deal a critical hit with this weapon, the target suffers an additional 2d8 necrotic damage, and you regain an equal amount of hit points. You gain an additional use of Channel Divinity between rests while attuned to this weapon. When you bring a medium or larger living creature to 0 hit points with this weapon, you can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to gain a number of temporary hit points equal to your character level.[1]

Notable uses[]

Arkhan used Fane-Eater throughout the assault on Vecna's stronghold of Thar Amphala. With three strikes enhanced by Divine Smite, including a critical hit, he dealt 135 points of damage to Vecna in a single turn, a record for highest damage done by a guest player character to a single creature in one turn.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Fane-Eater was published in the book Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus, where it was again wielded by Arkhan. This version of Fane-Eater lacks the properties that grant the wielder an additional use of Channel Divinity and the ability to use Channel Divinity to gain temporary hit points.[4]
  • Despite its name, it's very likely that this weapon isn't purposely connected with any place of power, but instead references the altars and holy sites that its wielder (with fiendish associations) would likely target.
