Faril is a dwarven miner, formerly from Jorenn Village, and a member of the group led by Thorn.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Faril is a dwarven man with brown hair.[1] After Tinyn's death, he began wearing her glasses, which are too big for him, on a chain around his neck.[2] His voice is described as "musical".[5]

Personality[]

According to Thorn, Faril is afraid of ghosts and "has an eye for code".[6] When Vax'ildan first saw him, he noted that Faril walked "with a bounce in his step."[1] In the aftermath of Tinyn's death, Faril was much more serious, spoke little, and, despite previously being a noncombatant, was willing to attempt to free the captured miners on his own, and to stand his ground alongside Thorn.[7][8] He took up a leadership position among the miners when they were released from jail.[9]

Biography[]

Background[]

Faril lived in Jorenn Village prior to the conflict between the Shadewatch and the miners.[3] In about 805 PD,[10][2] the miners were forced out of Jorenn Village by Shademaster Derowen.[11] They spent some time in the hills but chose the mines as their base, because Faril was afraid of ghosts.[2] Faril's partner Tinyn became second-in-command of the group, with Thorn as their leader.[12]

Kith & Kin[]

Around 807 PD,[10] Faril and Tinyn were living among the outlaw miners.[1] The pair were present in the dining hall when Vax'ildan first joined the miners for a meal, and later when the miners retreated to a deeper part of the mines.[1][13]

When the miners prepared to confront the Shadewatch, Faril was part of the group led by Junel who escaped deeper into the hills, while Tinyn was part of the group that faced the Shadewatch in battle.[4] Tinyn was killed in the battle.[14]

A few days later, when Vax'ildan brought his sister Vex'ahlia to visit the miners, Faril was sitting on his own, holding Tinyn's book without reading it and wearing her glasses on a chain around his neck.[15] According to Thorn, Faril hadn't been eating since Tinyn's death, and wanted to go rescue the captured miners.[7] He gave Faril the notebook that Vax'ildan stole from Derowen, and asked him to help decode it; Faril got to work immediately.[6] Later that day, some of the miners began tapping out a rhythm with objects, and Faril began singing "a simple song, about a miner lost in the deep with no way to come home."[16] Sencha, Junel, Thorn, and many others joined in the song.[16] As it concluded, Crispin ran into the cavern to announce that the Shadewatch had returned.[17] Thorn gave the notebook back to Vax'ildan.[18] Faril disagreed with Thorn's plan to surrender himself, and insisted on standing his ground alongside him.[8] He led Vax'ildan, Vex'ahlia, and Trinket to a secret, narrow passage that would lead them out of the mines, but insisted on staying behind while they escaped.[19]

By the next morning, the miners had been captured, and Faril was presumably held in Jorenn Village's town jail with the other adults.[20] Following the death of the Shademaster, Wick, the de facto leader of Jorenn Village, released the miners, and Faril led them back to the mines.[9]

Relationships[]

Tinyn[]

Tinyn was Faril's partner.[4] He was deeply affected by her death; in the few days that followed, he refused to eat and spoke flatly.[21] He kept Tinyn's book, and wore her glasses on a chain around his neck.[15]
