"Fanged Revenge" (4x08) is the eighth episode of the fourth campaign of Critical Role, featuring the Soldiers table. A battle for vengeance ensues in Castle Sloak as the Soldiers face the traitorous Baron Casimir Gavendale and his new knights...

Synopsis[]

Cold open[]

Julien Davinos and Thaisha Lloy are, with the two other Seekers and Lady Aranessa Royce, in an inn in the Dvalmar Pass on one of the main highways from the fallen empire of Obridimia to Kahad, seeking answers to the visions seen by Occtis Tachonis. Lady Aranessa is ill, from worry, lack of food, and her grief over the death of her husband Thjazi Fang, and has difficulty eating, but Julien and Thaisha urge her to keep up her strength, hoping for the gates of Faerie to open once again to the souls of the Royces.

Part I[]

At Castle Sloak in Timmony, Wicander and Tyranny are inside with the new Baron, Casimir Gavendale, while Teor, Thimble, and Kattigan are outside in the pouring rain. Thimble flies through an arrow slit but all she can see is that Casimir's party is apparently not living there, but elsewhere. She does see him send most of the others in his party down to the village to raise the taxes. Meanwhile, inside, Tyranny in her guise as "Dr. Finger" is trying to get Casimir alone, or at least prone, but there are still a few guards there with him. Casimir is suspicious and believes Wick when he confirms Casimir's guess that Dr. Finger is actually a courtesan. Outside, Teor goes around the castle and attempts to climb a tree to see over the walls, but falls, drawing the attention of the departing guards. He manages to sprint into cover and isn't seen, although he learns that some of them don't like the new baron before they leave for the village. There are still multiple knights, men-at-arms, and Crow Keepers in the castle, however. Thimble flies back to both Teor and Kattigan and tells them what she's seen.

Meanwhile, Wicander is still being questioned by Casimir, who is puzzled by what House Halovar is doing visiting this crumbling ruin of a castle, and becomes very suspicious when Wick tries to get him to go outside with him. Eventually Wick panics and uses Thaumaturgy to yell for help, but Tyranny's Suggestion convinces Casimir that she just wants to help him feel better and to send the men-at-arms out of the room. Wicander's excuse that he shouted for help because he was claustrophobic is unsuccessful and Casimir recognizes that Wick has no power with his own family. He orders the guard to take Wick outside and kill him immediately if anything happens to Casimir.

Outside, Kattigan has heard Wick's amplified call and sends Wulferic to distract the guards at the gate by attacking the horses and pack mule, sending them scattering pursued by four guards including Dame Cosgrove and Gully Breeches. Wicander, prone in the mud with a sword at his chest, casts Friends on the guard holding him but the second guard steps up and uses a foot to push his head deeper into the mud. Meanwhile, Tyranny has finally enticed Casimir into pulling down his pants and laying down. She casts Hold Person on him and stuffs a rag in his mouth. Kattigan and Teor both make it over the wall but Kattigan is immediately seen and tosses the Crow over the wall, killing him. Wicander then casts Color Spray on the guard holding him and rolls out of the way of the knight's counterattack before running toward Kattigan. Teor jumps off the wall onto a guard but damages himself from the fall instead. He lets out a Daunting Roar.

Meanwhile, inside the castle, Thimble flies down to land directly in front of the Held Casimir's eyes. Saying, "He would have had your back until the end of time. You shouldn't have betrayed us," she thrusts her rapier into one of his eyes before cutting his neck, leaving him badly wounded. A guard opens the door, sees the bleeding Casimir, and attacks Tyranny, wounding her and breaking her concentration on the holding spell. Casimir attacks, severely wounding her, and runs up the stairs in pursuit of the flying Thimble. Tyranny pulls out the rainbow mystery Chanter's Egg and throws it, creating a giant illusory squid in the room, which conceals her from view.

There are still three enemies in the courtyard, and Kattigan uses his atlatl to attack one of them, following up with a Hail of Thorns that kills one and badly wounds another. Wick Misty Steps to try to heal Tyranny and seeing the giant squid, calls to her. From inside the squid, she ominously responds, "Be not afraid -- I am this squid." Unable to see or reach her, Wicander casts Word of Radiance. Thimble attacks Casimir with her rapier, then uses its Vex property to gain advantage and a sneak attack with her toy scimitar, leaving him bloodied. She then flies out the window, taunting him.

Downstairs, the knight attacks Wicander, knocking him unconscious and bringing him very close to death before noticing that the squid is illusory and charging up the stairs to join Casimir, who hits Thimble with his crossbow. In the courtyard, Teor hits the knight with a Guiding Bolt and Kattigan with his bow. Meanwhile, Tyranny pulls the unconscious Wick inside the squid with her, and helps him, giving him advantage on his next death saving throw, which succeeds. He chooses to give Heroic Inspiration to Teor rather than stabilize himself.[1] Upstairs, Casimir is facing Thimble with his heavy crossbow. He tells her she talked him into the Falconer's Rebellion, and he is tired of waiting to hear a falcon's cry again. Saying, "You never did have patience," Thimble attacks and kills him. As he dies, she looks into his one good eye and says, "Can you hear it now?"

Both Kattigan and Teor see that Thimble has achieved their goal of killing Casimir. Teor tells the knight in combat with him that they have no quarrel with the king, but the Crows must die, and kills the last of the Crow Keepers before healing himself with Lay on Hands. Kattigan jumps down from the wall on top of the knight and grapples him. Meanwhile, Wicander stabilizes himself after another successful death save. The surviving knights realize that the new Baron is dead, and choose to lay down their weapons.

Part II[]

Teor casts Cure Wounds on Wicander, bringing him back to consciousness. The two knights introduce themselves as Sir Finch and Sir Copsewood, from Arderin in Vallow, who both fought in the War of Axe and Vine. Their fellow knight Dame Cosgrove is from Sloak and fought in the Falconer's Rebellion. They are at something of a loss, since the Baron to whom they swore fealty is dead, but the party tells them that their oaths are to King Valian. Sir Copsewood walks away from the conversation. They learn that Sir Finch is a first generation knight fallen on hard times who was to have been paid 15 gold pieces a month by Casimir Gavendale. Kattigan asks him to wait until tomorrow to decide what to do next-- what banner is flying then is where his next days will take him. Wicander gives him 60 gold, and Finch says he'll share it with his brother knights and provide several weeks of service to the Barony of Sloak.

When the knights go to deal with the dead, Tyranny and Teor try to assure Wicander that he did well in the encounter, but Wick is convinced he was terrible, and that Tyranny is only saying nice things because she's bound to him for three years. He realizes he must make some life changes and decisions, and one of them is to figure out how far the rot has spread within his family and shed "disinfecting light" on it. Tyranny suggests that they fight them under the name of the Torn Banner, so that the Halovars won't realize Wick (and the rest of the group) were involved in what has just taken place. Teor suggests that instead of the Torn Banner, they use some more suggestive imagery. Kattigan fetches Casimir's black cape and Tyranny uses Poison Spray to bleach the figure of a falcon onto it.

Just then, Dame Cosgrove returns with another knight and two footmen and is surprised to learn the new Baron Sloak is dead. She anxiously asks if he named an heir, and on learning that he did not, appears distraught to realize it will fall to the Earl of Gormalay. She offers her service to the party. Teor suggests to Wick that if the Earl is a negative influence, perhaps they could claim the castle in the name of House Halovar, leaving their new flag behind to confuse anyone who comes investigating. Wicander hesitantly agrees, although he sees being Baron Sloak as a step down from his current position. He orders the knights to tell Gully Breeches (now on his way back to the castle with his party of armed men at arms) that he is now under the command of House Halovar and must immediately return the castle's deed. Gully refuses to believe this, telling them they're all crazy, but Wicander sternly tells him to cease his insolence. He, Tyranny, and Teor all cast Thaumaturgy to make these words even more impressive, convincing Gully to accept this, and Wicander reinforces it by reminding him to call him, "My Lord." Teor demands he undress, removing all crow's feathers from his costume, and Gully complies, saying that Wicander will have no quarrel with him. Seeing the sorry state of the other, veteran knights' equipment, Teor then requires Gully to remove his expensive plate mail. This demand hurts Gully's pride much more, but he obeys. The other knights also swear fealty to Wicander.

Teor then tells Dame Cosgrove that they're expecting Dame Morgaine in the area, and when she learns that Morgaine is a Hound of the King, she tells them that that it is very rare indeed for the hounds to be seen there, given it is off the main road and very poverty-stricken. However, things had been looking up while Lady Sloak was still alive because a new bridge was being built. Kattigan takes Wicander aside and suggests that he give his new power to Dame Cosgrove, as a native of Sloak, while Finch pays off the men-at-arms who wish the honor-bound knights luck and leave.

The party decides they should spend the night at the public house in the village, but Wicander is still very nervous about defying his family. Tyranny tells him they can publicly announce the Candescent Creed has taken over the castle, or they can just give it to the people to live independently. Either way, he is going to need to learn how to lie to his family. The rest of the party agree with the idea of giving the castle to the people, but want them to swear not to reveal that Wicander was there. Eventually Wicander decides to give up the castle and let the people choose whether to reveal it came from him or not. Teor suggests that Dame Cosgrove, the last knight of the Order of the Howling Rain, would be a good new Baroness. Wicander agrees, tells Dame Cosgrove they are bequeathing the castle to her, and gives her the deed, for her to make it a place that does good for the community.

Meanwhile, Thimble has written "The FANGed falcon lives on" underneath the falcon on their new banner, and flies up to hang it over the castle. The other knights happily agree to stay and help the new Baroness Cosgrove, who asks Thimble if she was the fearsome pixie who fought with Thjazi Fang in the rebellion with the Torn Banner. When Thimble agrees, the Baroness tells them that the Banner saved her life when she was only 17.

As the party readies to ride down to the public house in the village, they realize Gully Breeches has stolen one of the horses and absconded, but decide to go to the bar anyway. There, they are warmly greeted by Brauwla, the proprietor. Dame Morgaine walks in and also greets them. She has heard Casimir is dead, and that Wicander is the new Baron, but he corrects her, telling her that that honor belongs to Dame Cosgrove, who shows her the deed. Morgaine remarks it looks stunningly official, and when the Baroness says they're about to send to Tybry's Lea and the Earl, suggests that perhaps instead the king could confirm the deed of title on his return from Dol-Makjar. The party tells her they're still looking for Talcydimir Pridesire, and Morgaine informs them that the Tachonis caravan split, with half of it going north on the King's Way toward Tybry's Lea.

Looking out the window, Morgaine indicates her business in Sloak will soon be concluded, and they see Gully running across the rain-soaked landscape, pursued by a large mastiff, who leaps on him, saying, "You doffed your armor. Let the world see as you feel its weight one last time," as he pushes his head underwater until he drowns. Morgaine introduces the mastiff as Sir Hawkins, Hound of the King, who greets them. He asks to hear of their exploits, saying that they must speak of Cyd and how to wrest him from the clutches of House Tachonis.

  • Kattigan: Where do we go from here?
    Teor: Each take a side?
Kattigan : Split the party, great idea. (laughter)
    Teor: It's always worked before.
    Kattigan: Let's do it.
    Teor: Divide and conquer.
Kattigan: Yeah, I remember that trick. The old pincer move. Never tried it in a castle, though.
  • Casimir Gavendale: (to Thimble) What did you do to me? You talked me into this rebellion. You talked me into this life. Where was the glorious dawn? How long was I supposed to wait to hear a falcon's cry again? If you don't actually know that a better day is coming, it's wrong to tell people to wait.
Thimble: (snickers) You never did have patience. (stabs him to death) Can you hear it now?
  • Tyranny: (to Wicander) God, you really have really very pretty eyes. And they're going to make beautiful cocktail garnishes for me if you fucking die right now.
  • Sir Copsewood: I live by my oaths which I swore.
Sir Finch: And I swore by my oaths as well. And here's us standing on a little island of our oaths in a vast sea of whatever has been happening.
  • Tyranny: (to Wicander) You're the only person in your family that actually believes something, and I have no reason to believe anything at all except that I'm here and I'm with you. So you're going to be putting a lot of heat on yourself if you want to take down your whole family, but I'm here.
