Erro[8]
[!h]

Erro Mordaurum was a gold dragonborn ranger played by Liam O'Brien in Exandria Unlimited: Divergence. He was a mortal incarnation of the Platinum Dragon.[9]

Description[]

Erro was an aged dragonborn with a long-healed scar across his throat. His eyes had a far-off look, and the flesh around them was sunken and sallow. During his time as a prisoner at Rybad-Kol, Erro was dressed in filthy traveling clothes and a shredded cloak, and coated in so much dust from his months traveling across the wastes that one almost couldn't tell his scales were gold.[10]

In the caravan readying the dragonborn of the prison to be sent to their deaths, Erro advised those panicking around him to calm down and conserve their energy for any potential opportunity to escape.[11]

He had a tendency to keep an eye on the horizon, looking out for any threats.[12]

Erro felt the way he had lived his life was a stark contrast to the way his brave, devout parents had lived. He felt out of place in Vasselheim.[13]

Biography[]

Background[]

After the fall of Aeor Bahamut the Platinum Dragon and Erathis the Lawbearer were the strongest supporters of the idea of creating the Divine Gate. The All-Hammer supported the idea as well and, arguing that anything a god did another deity could undo, he traveled to Exandria incarnated as a dwarf, to work a piece of that divine barrier with mortal hands. The Moonweaver tried to help him hide with her magic, but the Lord of the Hells learned about it and cursed her miracle, so that no god would know about and incarnated god's new identity, not even the god themselves, losing all memories of divinity. Upon learning this, the Platinum Dragon, wanting to rescue his lost sibling, ignored the warnings and created a mortal avatar to find him, losing his own identity in the process.[14] He, however, chose his mortal parents carefully as a security measure: Arrideo and Cor, a remarkable couple that followed him as a god, so they would raise a son in a way that would keep the Platinum Dragon's values, even if the god didn't remember who he was.[15]

Erro was born in Issylra, and lived in a place called Seagate. His parents were very devout and responsible, and helped take in refugees fleeing toward Vasselheim; they visited the Dawn City themselves with their baby once, to bring him to the Platinum Sanctuary.[16] When he was still very young, a battle between the Lord of the Hells and his enemies spilled into the town and his father Arrideo was killed. He and his mother Cor fled across the ocean to the wastes of Gwessar.[17] After that, a man who was like an uncle to him, Skoll, showed him how to use some basic druidic magic and to survive in the wilds.[18][19] Erro's mother died when he was about eleven years old[20] of a sickness that wiped out the small settlement they had found and he and Skoll stayed together, with Skoll raising him like a son.

When Skoll died, Erro gave up on life and other people and wandered until he arrived, starving and near death, to the lake in the Snowgrave Pass where he found Donaea, a beautiful dragonborn woman who was in the same condition. They lived at the lake for over a year as partners, and Erro found belief again as Donaea told him that change was coming.[21] Eventually, soldiers of the Strife Emperor "robbed him of what little joy he had in this world." They attacked, slashing Erro's throat. Donaea killed three of them before they killed her, and Erro slew the last survivor with a rock before fleeing, giving up on life again.[22][23]

He wandered Gwessar for decades, making a map of the continent[24] and avoiding capture.[25] His repeated attempts to settle somewhere all came to naught.[26] He had survived in the wastes for the better part of his life,[27] and had learned that survival was harder with more people,[28] so he spent only short periods of time around any gathering of people.[29] At one point he was near a clash of two gods, the noise from which was deafening; one of those gods was struck down.[30]

Eventually Erro was captured by the forces of the Betrayer Gods and brought to Rybad-Kol, a fortress prison dedicated to the Strife Emperor, as he was trying to guide Rei'nia Saph and her group to Torm's Hill.[31] Life there was hard, but he and Nia stayed close.[32]

"Give and Take" (E4x01)[]

About a year after being captured, Erro and other dragonborn were eventually gathered and put in carts, since there were orders that the healthy dragonborn were to be sent to the Scaled Tyrant, so that she could devour the metallic ones and use the chromatic ones as soldiers. Erro was silent and meditative, and advised his fellow captives to try not to draw attention and save their strength, although he was aware they might die either way. Before they left, Nia appeared and told the authorities that there might be a plague of some sort affecting the dragonborn prisoners, making them unfit to be sent to Tiamat. She surreptitiously marked Erro with a black liquid to make it look like he had markings of that illness, and he played along by coughing. High Priestess Sata'al agreed to quarantine some of them within the Wandering Walls, although she rejected Nia's request to personally treat Erro and Crokas. The old man was thankful to his friend, but before entering the Walls he told her that if she had the chance to run away she should do so instead of worrying about him. He also used their new privacy to clarify to the other prisoners that no one was actually sick. After a while Garen (another prisoner) opened a hole in the wall and Nia whistled to call Erro (who helped rescue her when she almost fell through the floor). Joined by Fiedra Marrow, they all moved through the Wandering Walls back to the door, with Erro using his fire breath multiple times to weaken the metal, while outside a cataclysmic battle shook the entire prison; the old dragonborn recognized it as gods fighting.

When they finally got free they found everything destroyed, although with signs that most of the victims were followers of the Betrayer Gods. While others looked for survivors, Erro managed to locate his belongings thanks to some mice sent by the Wildmother. On his map, a skittering insect left a glowing dot marking a pass in the southern reaches of the Stormpoint Mountains that Erro knew to be safe. While they were among the ruins he noticed that Marlath (a follower of the Scaled Tyrant who had been captured nonetheless) seemed to be in shock, and whispering about money, so Erro advised Crokas to keep an eye on him. They debated for a bit about what to do next: Erro insisted that the larger their group, the harder it would be for them to move, while Garen prioritized finding more people and taking care of them. In the end they agreed to move with all the survivors to the point on Erro's map, staying hidden under the trees.

The old dragonborn, using his background and some basic knowledge of nature magic, helped the group over the following days and tried to provide advice and nourishment; however, the more they traveled, the fewer provisions they had and the more tired they were. At one point, when they had run out of water, Nia and Starmian Fiddleflask decided to venture beyond the treeline to see if they could find some, and Erro, despite his exhaustion, followed his friend. Since Starmian was too tired Nia advised him to return to the camp, and he and Erro exchanged a look as he did. Starmian then laid down, whispered that maybe he would find water on the other side, and died. A storm broke shortly afterwards, brought by the Stormlord as he walked the land, and Erro watched the Prime Deity as he collected the precious liquid; the god of storms announced to their group that they were witnessing the last miracles, and that the age of deities helping them directly was coming to an end.

"Seven of Them" (E4x02)[]

The group continued moving, and when Fiedra was too weak Erro started carrying her on his back, chatting with her about the time they spent in and out of prison; he, however, could notice that the halfling was getting sick because of the rain, and he was bleeding because of the harsh road (although he kept insisting on leading). When they had only one day left to arrive to their destination, Erro focused his powers on creating a decent shelter for Fiedra with Mold Earth, and when Crokas asked him about magic, he told him he would teach him about it if they survived. Eventually they reached the Hallowroot Hills and Erro led his group through a recently opened briar path until they arrived to Torm's Hill. He was very impressed by the amount of people living there, something he hadn't seen since he was a child, and when he met with Nez Pilch, one of the local matriarchs, she boasted that their community had prospered despite the old dragonborn saying otherwise last time he saw her. Although Erro felt some apprehension about the whole situation, since he wasn't used to happy gatherings that didn't end in tragedy, he kept that to himself; he congratulated Crokas for all his help on their way there, and with his permission, leaned on him, since he was tired (he also wondered if the new belt the young man had was giving him new powers, or simply helping him unlock a potential he already had). He woke up alone next morning, fully recovered, and he started looking for Nia, finding instead Luz a childhood friend of hers; she told him that Liana, Nia's sister was gone (scaring him until she clarified that she was still alive, but no longer in Torm's Hill), and he told her about their journey in turn; the tiefling was very affected by their suffering in Rybad-Kol, but felt some comfort thinking about change actually coming, despite what the prisoners had been told by their jailers. He brought her to Nia, who was in the infirmary, and the friends were happily reunited. Nia took the chance to check on the old dragonborn to see if he had wounds, but he smiled at her for the first time, and declared he had finally brought her to Torm's Hill, apologizing for taking so long. He also took the chance to talk for a bit with Klasara Bandy, Nez's wife.

Shortly after seven soldiers of the Strife Emperor arrived to Torm's Hill, killing people and demanding the others to return to subjugation. Erro watched closely, noticing that the townsfolk were scared, but that those warriors looked like they hadn't eaten in a while; thus, he got closer to one of them and used his fiery breath, encouraging people to fight. He breathed fire once more, refusing to bend the knee, but the enemy captain knocked him unconscious, as the dragonborn whispered that change was coming (actually believing it). He woke up when Nia cast Cure Wounds on him, channeling the power of the Moonweaver, and moments later, when she fell unconscious, he saw Garen step in, taking a blow directed at the half-elf, and giving Erro a smile before falling. The old dragonborn got up, and after attacking an enemy he felt power growing inside of him, deepening his connection to the earth, and allowing him to cast Cure Wounds on Nia. When the battle was over, one of the Roaches, Otto, was healed and he told Erro that he loved him but he was crazy. He saw Nia trying to reanimate Luz, who was already dead, and he put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her; after she pointed at the sky and told Sehanine to take care of Liana, since she had taken Luz already, she focused on helping other people, but Erro noticed that for a moment, the moon was seen in the part of the sky she had focused on.

The group rested for the rest of the day, recovering from the fight, and Klasara and Nez told Erro he and his friends could stay for as long as they wanted. The dragonborn and Garen sat together, both feeling old. The former thanked him for helping freeing the dragonborn back in Rybad-Kol, and Garen admitted that he felt somewhat small with all that was happening. In response, Erro told him that although he didn't trust other people easily, Garen had had his trust from the very beginning. He then visited Nia in the new cemetery, near the Larksbrook river, and Crokas, who had been with her until then, told the older dragonborn to make sure she didn't leave. He told the half-elf that he understood how she felt after losing Luz, and sat with her; when she asked him what he wanted to do next, he told her that he wanted to find something different. She liked the idea, and declared that she wanted to look for Liana in Snowgrave Pass in two days, to give their group some time to prepare in case they wanted come with them. After sunset, Erro camped outside of town, near a newly built bridge, and spent hours near his bonfire, watching the mountains as the dust in the sky started clearing, showing the stars and Catha for the first time in centuries. In a similar way, at dawn he felt the sun and saw the valley around him, beautiful and filled with potential.

"Mirror and Key" (E4x03)[]

Before he and his group left Torm's Hill Erro took a moment to say goodbye to the matriarchs, telling them that the beautiful valley was theirs, but warning them about Bane's followers and about the need of preparing some form of defense; he also told them that although he didn't know if he would ever return, he would never forget them. He and his friends traveled until they reached Snowgrave Pass, where they found an obsidian tower that wasn't there last time Erro visited the place; there they met Gubbling, a former follower of the Strife Emperor, to whom they convinced (after Erro told him that his god had fallen) to abandon his position as the last defender of the tower, sending him to redeem himself in Torm's Hill, with some Good Pinecones for the road. They spent the night there and took some gear (Erro chose a scimitar, his mother's weapon of choice); from one of the windows Erro was able to see a moonlit lake in the distance, where he used to live with Donaea, so before going to bed he observed it for a while, and updated his map, realizing they had to go that way anyway.

Next morning they arrived to his former home, and he immediately kneeled before the stone were his partner fell, telling his friends about her and about his own past, and how he had given up, crying a bit. He was comforted by the others, and Fiedra told him that his actions were proof that he hadn't completely given up, and Garen carved something in the stone to honor Donaea. Before they left he told his friends to try the water of the lake, and when Crokas started swimming, the old dragonborn was reminded of his partner again, since she loved to swim there. They kept traveling until they found a promontory in which Fiedra revealed a secret sanctum filled with trinkets, documents, and magic items. Erro was very surprised, since he didn't know that place, and was even more shocked when he found his mother's old shield, Honor's Last Stand, among the treasures. While they were there Nia finally found her sister, learning that she had been a mortal incarnation of the Moonweaver all along, and that the cleric, through their loving bond, had to be an example for other mortals, showing them that their divine magic and connection with the deities would remain even if the gods left Exandria; thus, the group decided to travel to the coast, with Vasselheim being their next destination. Before they left the sanctum, Erro used some parchment to write in Draconic (remembering his father's teachings): "If the world is just, let hope be reforged", inadvertently causing a Hallow spell to activate there when he left the note on the door. On their way to the coast he started teaching Crokas some Draconic too.

One night Erro noticed treants moving near them and told Garen, mistakenly believing they were giants; when the tree-like beings revealed their identity and confirmed the group wasn't evil, one of them, Kamatua, told them about their mission in the south (to heal the land) and gave them some magic nuts before leaving. Days later the party ended up in the middle of a battle between the armies of Asmodeus and Corellon, and during the fight Erro killed a devil and shortly after got Honor's Last Stand Awakened, remembering his parents' lessons and pushing another enemy away. When the battle was over they were approached by unicorns, and the old dragonborn asked one of them, Lumia, about the Arch Heart, getting confirmation that they were ok (although their followers seemed sad about the idea of the god leaving Exandria). Eventually the group arrived to a village near a road, where they got a guide (Tristan, a part-merfolk young man) to the area of the coast in which they might find a boat. When they finally arrived there was nothing there, but next morning (thanks to the intervention of Fiedra's new key) an Issylran vessel arrived, and a very old friend of Erro's family, Grenalin, announced that they were looking for survivors. The old man was very happy to see the dragonborn and asked about Cor and Skoll, although he understood when he was told they were gone long ago. Grenalin agreed to take them to Issylra, and when Garen told his friends that he wasn't sure if he had enough strength for such a journey, Erro assured him that he did, and that he would personally help the dwarf get to Uthtor after their current mission. With that, the five members of the group left Gwessar together.

"By Heart Alone" (E4x04)[]

After days of journey the group arrived to the Dawn City, and even though they had passed through Seagate (his former home) to come, Erro was too lost in thought and his own memories; looking at the people of Vasselheim and remembering how many refugees wanted to be there, he thought that the city should look outside its own walls more often. Grenalin guided them to the Shadowbrook neighborhood, where Nia approached the clergy of the Moonweaver, talking to High Priestess Eldanwyn; she explained the situation regarding Sehanine and the Divine Gate (with Crokas supporting her with the memories of his orb), and they were all brought to the Runekeep, to help Far-Seer Volsting, who had fallen ill. There the half-elf offered her help, and her friends supported her, with Erro and Garen mentioning how she had survived under the rule of the Strife Emperor. After she healed Volsting they all talked about the deities and how they were leaving, and mentioned that the Platinum Dragon and the All-Hammer had been silent for a time; Erro confirmed that he and his group had seen some gods, but none of them were the ones missing. Shortly after, back in the streets, Nia reunited with Casimir and Marsa, her parents, and hugged them; after telling them about Liana and the Moonweaver she introduced Erro to them as the person that had kept her alive, and both parents thanked him, making him feel satisfied but slightly weird.

Before catching up with her parents Nia visited the Platinum Sanctuary with Erro, and when he admitted that he wasn't sure of what to do next, she told him that since she had found her calling in the Dawn City, maybe he would too. When the old dragonborn argued that he had promised Garen to take him home, Nia replied that she would respect Erro's wishes, but whatever happened she didn't want him to be alone again, because he was family to her now; she then joked that someone had said something about change coming, but couldn't remember who (a joke he quietly acknowledged), and then laughed and leaned on him, declaring that although change was beautiful, there was some value in permanence. When they returned they found Crokas with an injured Fiedra, so they brought her inside Nia's parents' home and the cleric cast Healing Word on the halfling; Crokas immediately reproached her for her actions, since she had almost died chasing Lord Callister and had lost her Infiltrator's Key. After Nia Communed with the Moonweaver they confirmed that Lord Callister wouldn't leave Vasselheim for the time being, and that while they tried to locate him they should also try to find the avatars of the Platinum Dragon and the All-Hammer.

For almost two weeks the group investigated, and eventually, they located Lord Callister in an empty chapel of the Moonweaver; although there was chaos in the streets (since the fall of Ghor Dranas had just been announced) they decided to face the warlock. As they arrived to the chapel devils started appearing, but Erro protected her with his now Exalted vestige, and then attacked them with his scimitar. Although Crokas killed Lord Callister, the devils kept fighting, as the Lord of the Hells himself, through a planar rift, commanded them; Nia Guided Erro, and he attacked a red-eyed fiend that declared that things would end there. The old dragonborn stayed with their cleric after an imp poisoned her, but then he focused on Garen, since Asmodeus (despite being contained by the holy presence in the temple) seemed interested in killing him. When the archdevil cast Fire Bolt, Erro moved to stop the fire, and was killed; feeling grateful for what he had accomplished, he fell, thanking Garen from freeing him from prison with one last whisper. Crokas took the body of his mentor, scorned Asmodeus in Draconic, and left as the Moonweaver, through Nia's Major Image, closed the rift leaving the Lord of the Hells locked in his infernal realm. Outside, after regaining the divine essence he had had in Erro, the Platinum Dragon arrived to the Dawn City to announce the Divergence.

Later life[]

Erro's friends brought his body back to Gwessar, since according to Nia she would have wanted to be buried next to Donaea; thus, he was laid to rest next to the lake in Snowgrave Pass, in what became known as one of the most beautiful places of the entire continent.[33] He was also commemorated in Vasselheim, since Garen sculpted a statue of him with Honor's Last Stand affixed to it, inside the reconstructed chapel.[34]

Years later, while the old dwarf was working on a keystone in Stilben, the Platinum Dragon appeared before him in the form of Erro, just as he looked the last time his friend saw him; the dragonborn manifested two spectral wings on his back, and told him that although it had taken him an entire lifetime to find him, the time had come for Garen to come with him, and to leave the world in the hands of their children. The old dwarf then came to the realization that he had been the mortal incarnation of the All-Hammer all along, and declared that Exandria would be fine, although he wouldn't mind living there again in the future. As a last gift, under the guise of an enormous gold dragon, Erro/Bahamut showed Garen/Moradin many beautiful places across Exandria, places he had helped shape as the god of creation. Then they returned to their bodies and the Platinum Dragon, after explaining that an entire life of mortal work would be the keystone of the Divine Gate, left the world, being followed by his brother.[35]

Relationships[]

Before being imprisoned, Erro and Donaea were partners and lived safely in the lake near the southern terminus of the Stormpoint Mountains.[36] During that period of his life the gold dragonborn regained hope, but lost it again when Donaea was killed.[37]

Trivia[]

  • Per Liam O'Brien, his character's name is a combination of Latin terms: erro ([I] wander), mordeo ([I] bite), and aurum (gold).[58]
    • The meaning of the name describes both the background of the character and the color of his scales.
  • Liam was helping Brennan Lee Mulligan with the surprise about the hidden avatars of the Platinum Dragon and the All-Hammer, so he knew all along about the identity of Erro and Garen. His character, however, didn't, so he made an effort to keep it secret, while occasionally adding subtle hints in his roleplay.[59]
  • Erro Mordaurum bears some similarities to Fizban, another wandering old man associated to gold dragons who is actually a mortal avatar of Bahamut in other worlds.[60]
