Eaedalus Okiro is the Alcald of Cathmoíra, as well as the older brother of Nydas Okiro and a friend of Zerxus Ilerez. As an NPC, Eaedalus is played by Brennan Lee Mulligan.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Eaedalus is a large and handsome human man, muscular and with a big stomach. Like his brother, he has a beard, and his is long and bushy.[4]
Personality[]
In his youth Eaedalus was more realistic than Nydas, and he grew up to be a responsible and trustworthy man, able to manage stressful situations.
Biography[]
Eaedalus and Nydas lived part of their younger years in Cathmoíra, Domunas, where they met Zerxus Ilerez.[5] When they were young boys they spent time in ships, while dreaming about living in floating cities such as Avalir;[6][7]
Eventually the Okiro brothers took different paths: while Nydas stayed at sea, becoming a successful pirate captain that would eventually move to Avalir to lead the Golden Scythe, Eaedalus formed a life in Cathmoíra, marrying a woman called Irmé and having two children with her, Romar and Ramira (the former aspired to become an adventurer, while the latter was a remarkable student).[8] At some point during his time in the city Eaedalus became its Alcald, the head of its government.
Seven years before the Calamity the First Knight of Avalir and Zerxus' husband, Evandrin Alterra, was declared dead.[9] The now-widowed paladin was forced to succeed his partner as First Knight,[10] so Eaedalus and Irmé took care of Elias (Zerxus and Evandrin's son), having him living in their home in Cathmoíra since his father wasn't able to spent time with him.
The eve of the Calamity, as both Cathmoíra and Avalir prepared for the Replenishment that was supposed to happen in a few hours, Eaedalus and his family joined the traditional sending of spell kites to send letters and gifts to inhabitants of the other city: in their case they sent Irmé's nut and fruit loaf, as well as letters to the Dragon of Avalir.[11]
That night, like many other people, the Okiros organized a celebration at their house, and after midnight the Alcald was still awake, writing a letter.[12] However, not long after, the Lord of the Hells, after successfully returning to Exandria, sent his forces to attack Cathmoíra. The citizens went directly to the Alcald's home, and Eaedalus started organizing the spellcasters to help with the defense and evacuation; he also sent Zerxus with Elias the moment he arrived, so father and son could talk, and after that, he continued evacuating, prioritizing that the children would go to the skyships, and making sure that Elias was with them[13] (although the young half-elf would end up leaving mounted on Tempus).[14]
Once Eaedalus himself was on a flying ship he used the Sending spell to contact Nydas and make sure he was ok. His brother, at death's door, lied to him, telling him everything was well, and dying remembering his younger years at his brother's side, possibly thanks to the last magical connection with the older Okiro.[15]
Thanks to their relatively successful evacuation, Eaedalus (and possibly his wife and children) survived the destruction of Domunas.
Relationships[]
Nydas Okiro[]
Even though Eaedalus didn't share his brother's aspirations and tendency to dream, he admired his attitude and eventual success, keeping in touch while they were in different cities, and being welcoming to him in his house. While witnessing the beginning of the Calamity Eaedalus shared with Nydas a hopeful memory of the two brothers.
Elias[]
Given the friendship between Zerxus and the Okiros Eaedalus and Irmé fostered Elias when he needed a stable home in Cathmoíra. The Alcald cared about the boy, and was worried about his relationship with his father, prioritizing that they could meet at least once even while devils were attacking the city.
Character information[]
Abilities[]
Eaedalus had latent magical abilities, possibly connected to the bloodline that gave Nydas his sorcerous powers. He knew at least one spell, Sending, and was able to share memories with his brother through that magic.[16]

Quotations[]
- Eaedalus: (about the floating city, in their youth) You think we'll ever get there one day?
Nydas: Of course we will. We're the Okiros. Nothing's going to stop us.
Eaedalus: Some things might. I don't know why I say you should get there, your head's already in the clouds.
Nydas: Brother! It's important to dream![17] - (to Nydas, in a letter) "Even dragons have to land. There'll be a table set for you when you get here, brother".[18]
Trivia[]
- His name seems to be a variation of Daedalus, which derives from the Ancient Greek daidállō (work/craft). In Greek mythology, Daedalus was a wise craftsman known (among other things) for trying to escape Crete with his son Icarus using wax wings, although the boy died when he flew too close to the sun, damaging his wings with the heat. In a way, there is a certain parallelism between Eaedalus and Daedalus, since both of them were worried about a younger relative focusing too much on the sky above them.
- His title comes from the Spanish alcalde, a mayoral title in Spanish-speaking countries. The term itself derives from the Arabic al qāḍī (judge).
- It is unknown which of his children is the eldest, although based on how they are described, it is possible that Ramira is older.
