The dust titan, known by other names such as the Rolling Danger or the Thunder that Comes,[1] is an elemental titan composed of dust, sand, and cyclonic winds.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The dust titan had two eyes of perpetual green glow,[2] and a huge body whose winds carried elements of its environment. In addition to its titanic, sandstone-like form, this primordial was capable of taking on the appearance of a tornado.[3]

Personality[]

The dust titan was very aggressive, and relentless while chasing a target.

History[]

Background[]

The dust titan was one of the primordials, ancient beings of chaotic elemental power that existed before the Exandrian Founding.[4] At some point this specific titan began to prowl the plane of Pandemonium, using its power to attack and destroy life forms and their buildings, such as a citadel made of dark metal.[5]

"The Search For Bob" (Sx45)[]

In 812 PD, after they managed to find the soul of Grog Strongjaw and put it back into his body, Vox Machina (accompanied by Lieve'tel Toluse and Bertrand Bell) started looking for "Bob", a mad githzerai who had stolen several treasures, including the material components necessary to return to the Material Plane. The dust titan, sensing their presence, started following them.

Thanks to a vision granted by the Raven Queen, Lieve'tel was able to reveal the identity of the pursuer to the adventuring party, and they managed to reach the ruinous citadel where Bob was hiding. However, while they negotiated with him, the titan broke in and attacked the group. They started defending themselves while looking for their stolen components, and during the process Pike Trickfoot asked the Everlight for help: the goddess of redemption appeared and used fiery chains to restrain the windy form of the titan, giving Vox Machina and Bob enough time to Plane Shift back to Exandria.

Abilities[]

The dust titan was a powerful entity with 3 Legendary Actions. It could use 1 to attack its enemies, or 2 to switch between its sandstone form and its whirlwind form.[6]

Sandstone form[]

In this form the dust titan had 26 AC,[7] and moved walking, with heavy steps that could be heard very far away.

Whirlwind form[]

In this form the dust titan had ≤ 23 AC,[8] was resistant to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage and was able to fly up to 60 feet in a single turn. It was also able to attack multiple times, doing two slam attacks in which it would try to grapple its victims (although a successful Strength saving throw would prevent or end said condition), and also try to crush an enemy trapped within its windy form.[9]

The multiple dust and sand particles of the titans body hit whoever was near. Thus, attacking in melee[10] or simply being in its space caused piercing damage. Moreover, in the second case an enemy had to made a Dexterity Saving throw or be engulfed in the tornado-like form,[11] taking more damage each turn while inside (although being able to get out with a successful Strength check).[12]

Appearances and mentions[]

Trivia[]

  • If creatures such as dust mephits can be used as reference, dust titans are formed by the elemental combination of air and earth.[13]
  • It is unclear if dust titans are born in Pandemonium or if the Rolling Thunder specifically traveled there at some point after its creation.
  • The dust titan Vox Machina encountered was one of the few survivors of its kind, since most of the primordials are gone, either destroyed, sealed, or with only fragments of their power present in the world.
    • Interestingly, it is unclear if Sarenrae kept fighting the titan after Pike was out of danger, or if she herself left Pandemonium, since she had been summoned only to restrain the creature, not kill it.
