Dusk Hunger, the Blade of the Black Flame, is the former weapon of Sorrowlord Athion Zathuda of the Unseelie Court.[3]
Appearance[]
The longsword was heavy but well-balanced and appeared black with a speckle of star metal.[4] It was described as a "flaming black dark fey blade" when used in battle.[5]
History[]
This legendary fey weapon was passed down through various Unseelie Court members for many, many years.[6] As of 843 PD the Sorrowlord had owned this weapon long enough to be known as its keeper.[7]
When the Fatestitcher talked about it to Bells Hells, they were very excited about the idea of Fearne Calloway (Athion's daughter) taking the weapon for herself, although she wasn't so sure.[8] Days later, when they knocked the Sorrowlord unconscious in the Shrine of Gilded Gifts in the ruins of Pravenier, Ashton Greymoore took the blade for the party.[9] The next day Orym examined the weapon for a bit and Fearne Identified it; Bells Hells considered if they should use the Quintessence Array to consume its magic, although they ended up not doing it.[10] Later, however, in Widogast's Nascent Nein-Sided Tower before starting their mission on Ruidus, Ashton won the game of "rollies" to decide who would absorb the blade with the Array. The absorption worked without issue and Ashton gained a permanent +2 to his Dexterity, and once per short rest, can add 3d6 fire damage to a melee attack he makes.[11] The sword was destroyed by the process.
Features[]
The weapon was a +2 longsword[12] that could be wielded with either one or two hands.[13] Each attack with this blade did about 15-16 slashing damage (when wielded by Zathuda).[14] As a bonus action, it could be set aflame, then did 2d6 additional fire damage on a hit,[15] ignoring the target's fire resistance.[16] It could also be used to attempt to magically blind the target.[17] While wielding the sword, the bearer could use an action to cast Searing Smite, Blinding Smite, Elemental Bane, or Flame Strike. Each spell could be cast once per long rest.[18]
Trivia[]
- One of Zathuda's titles was the "Bearer of the Lightless Flame". Since his sword was inherited, the title likely was as well.
