This page is about the halfling from Byroden. For the gnome from Hupperdook, see Duncan.

Duncan is a halfling resident of Byroden, and a childhood friend of Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Duncan is a halfling, suspected to have gnomish ancestry as well.[1][6] At the age of 16 or 17, he was noted to be "[t]aller than most halflings," with broad shoulders and strong arms from working as a blacksmith, as well as "[a] long, wide scar [...] from his hairline to his jaw, clouding one eye and pulling the corner of his mouth up in a grimace."[7][8]

Personality[]

As a teenager, following Thordak's attack on his home, Duncan was a serious person, accustomed to carrying a weapon.[9] He was willing to talk about the attack, and able to joke about it and exaggerate his stories for travelers.[10]

Biography[]

Background[]

Duncan grew up in Byroden, the eldest child of his family.[1] His fathers ran the local bakery.[4] He celebrated his birthday in the summer.[11]

Kith & Kin[]

Around 795 PD,[2][3] Duncan brought word to his friends Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia, who were out by the Gladepools, that an interesting elven man had come to town.[12] He didn't wait for them to follow him back to town.[13] He gathered with the other children (Feena, Tym, Vax'ildan, and Vex'ahlia) at Byroden's Bliss to see what the man was doing, and pointed out that he seemed richer "than the whole town put together."[14]

At some point before the twins left Byroden (around 796 PD[2][15]), Duncan celebrated a birthday party in a clearing near the Gladepools.[4] Duncan, his fathers, Tym, Vax'ildan, and Vex'ahlia were in attendance; the children played hide-and-seek until Tym had to be rescued from a tree.[16] They then slept under the stars and made up their own constellations.[11]

When Thordak attacked Byroden, Duncan was stuck in the collapsed bakery, although he later told travelers that he had "tangled with the dragon himself."[10] His fathers did not survive.[8]

Years later, around 802 PD,[2][4] Duncan was still living in Byroden, where worked as a smith and a guard.[5] He was the first person to see the twins when they returned.[7] He was initially hostile, drawing a sword against Vax'ildan, until he recognized who they were.[9] He was surprised to learn that the twins had no idea what had happened to the town.[10] He told them the story of Thordak's attack on Byroden and informed them of Elaina's death.[17] He also told them they were welcome to stay in Byroden, although they decided to leave and forge their own path.[8]

Relationships[]

Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia[]

Duncan was a childhood friend of Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia. They later reconnected as teenagers, and Duncan was the one to inform them of their mother's death.[17] He let them stay at the smithy where he worked and told them they were welcome to stay in Byroden.[8]
