Duderonomous is an elven mage living in Shoresight Isle. He is played by Christian Navarro.

Description[]

Duderonomous is an elven man in the human equivalent of his forties, with pointy ears that are shorter than usual, some wrinkles in the eyes and mouth, graying auburn hair and similarly colored facial hair consisting of a cropped beard and a mustache curled up like a second smile. When he met the Re-Slayer's Take he was wearing warm-colored robes, a pink glove in his right hand, and slippers of the same color.

He seems like a nice man, but very forgetful, paranoid, and easy to distract.[2]

History[]

Around 739 PD Timpani Guff visited Shoresight Isle, during a time in which he was still "in school", and by the point he left for the last time, fourteen years later, he had befriended Duderonomous.[3] They talked to each other at least once after that, when the druid commissioned him to create a set of fake human-like teeth for his friend Poogs, although without access to the goblin, Duderonomous made the teeth bigger than they should.[4]

Around 839 PD[5] Duderonomous noticed that the local population (moody outcasts for the most part) were visiting the cliffs and returning in an odd good mood, so, suspecting ghostly activity, he sent Greg the seagull to tell Timpani, who arrived shortly after with his team, the Re-Slayer's Take. Duderonomous met them all in the lighthouse, although he seemed confused, and it took him a moment to remember the firbolg; as he was greeting the younger adventurers he noticed that Frog was an aeormaton, and found her fascinating, briefly debating with her if she would count as a construct. After a local villager walked by, the old mage, very paranoid, decided to bring the group to the Honeycomb Inn. Although the people inside were equally weird, Duderonomous started explaining the strange phenomena in the hamlet, assuring that whatever entity was influencing the people had red eyes that were now watching him too; he also mentioned that, fifty or sixty years before (according to his library) the Slayer's Take came to deal with something dangerous "below" Shoresight Isle. In that moment, the people in the inn became aggressive, and started attacking. Duderonomous asked the adventurers not to hurt them, if possible, and took his wand to defend himself; with some effort he managed to cast Light on Idrin Shadowstep's fists, and gave him details of one of the villagers' life so the young wizard could use all of it to make the man regain control of himself. The elf tried a similar tactic with two brothers, using Minor Illusion to summon the image of their mother, Berenice, but they ignored it and attacked; despite that, eventually all the villagers were defeated and knocked unconscious. When the mysterious entity dragged Frog and tried to pull her inside the reflection in a puddle of ale, her friends grabbed her, and Duderonomous helped with his Unseen Servant, until they successfully pulled her out.

After the monk described the monster Duderonomous, very nervous, guided the party back to the lighthouse with Dancing Lights. When they finally arrived, he showed some confusion, saying that wasn't his house, but then he turned, with his eyes glowing red and a third one opening in his forehead, and with a completely different voice he said that was, in fact, his home.[6] The entity controlling him, the ghost of an aboleth, used the Magnificent Mansion spell cast in the lighthouse to send the adventurers to different illusory spaces to torture and manipulate them, while Duderonomous was brought to the floor up, where the light of the lighthouse was supposed to be shining. When they got free, there was where the Re-Slayers found him, with sickly translucent skin, and still glowing eyes, while the ghost possessing him laughed in the reflections; Duderonomous managed to tell them to bring back the light, and by turning on the lighthouse they could reveal and scare away the aboleth. The still confused Duderonomous looked very bad, and while examining his skin, Timpani discovered a message according to which the mage had erased his own memories (presumably to prevent the aboleth from getting them), and that he had left instructions to restore them. Following them, they found his potions and made him drink a bit of the yellow one (the color of a neglected tooth), two drops of the blue one (the color of the sky in a rainless noon), and some of the pink one (Duderonomous's favorite color). Then the elf's eyes glowed, and he announced to Timpani that he remembered everything.[7]

After Timpani healed the wizard's skin to return it to its normal color, Duderonomous explained the group that the aboleth had kidnapped Thyme (his pig) and was actively looking for its bones to be able to influence the physical world better, reason why he had hidden them in his bag of holding; during that conversation he also revealed that he had been the wizard that created the new set of teeth for Poogs, and congratulated Idrin when they told him he had fixed the size. After the adventurers agreed to use the bones to bait the ghost and defeat it, Duderonomous told them that he preferred to stay at home and rest, but he was willing to help them with the lighthouse's life, and gave them some health potions before they left. After going into the well on the other side of the island, connected to the sea cave where the aboleth delved, the adventurers brought the ghost to the surface, and Duderonomous, receiving their signal, prepared to turn the light on. However, when he saw that the aboleth was attacking Idrin, he tried to help first by casting Minor Illusion through the crystal of the lighthouse, making it look like two Idrins were in front of the monster, who despite everything wasn't fooled. Duderonomous then used the light against the aboleth, weakening it enough for Heera to defeat it. After that, the tiefling brought Thyme to the elven mage, and the two of them returned home while the Re-Slayers finished their mission; shortly after, however, Heera called him using her horn, since Timpani had been attacked and needed help, but the confused druid and his worried friends left the island through the Travel via Plants spell before Duderonomous even reached them.

A day later Duderonomous was present when Heldwell of the Slayer's Take and a group of adventurers sent by the Spectral Hand arrived asking for the Re-Slayers. The elven mage wasn't willing to share any information with them, and when he felt hostility, he used his wand to summon stormy weather and threaten them; they agreed to leave, although before doing that, Heldwell dropped a gold coin in his direction, telling Duderonomous to fix his clothes.[8]

Thyme[]

Duderonomous is very fond of this gentle and well-natured pig, who is neither a familiar nor a pet, but an awakened companion. The feeling seems to be mutual, and Thyme sees Duderonomous as a father figure, calling him "papa" and staying with him.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Since he is able to grow facial hair and his ears are slightly shorter than usual, it is very likely that he has mixed ancestry, and even dwarven blood, since the union of dwarves and elves famously produces individuals that look like one of their parent's races, with the exception of specific traits such as these.[13]
    • Although it is unclear how all this could affect his lifespan, given his appearance and what we know of his long-term friendship with Timpani, he's likely 200 years old or more.
  • Pink is his favorite color, possibly because of Thyme.
  • He considers all seagulls are liars, although he trusts Greg to use him as a messenger.
  • He and Timpani have a private university joke, which consists on hugging and shouting "Hot beef" at the same time.[14]
