Dolan is a short, thin man with greying unkempt hair, small spectacles he wore on the edge of his nose, and unshaven stubble on his chin. He wore a nice white shirt he had tucked in.[6]

Personality[]

Dolan seems polite but harbors ambitions of wielding influence that he keeps somewhat secret.[7] When situations turn dire, Dolan's response is to protect Horris from harm.[8]

Biography[]

Background[]

At some point in his past, Dolan earned an art degree.[9]

Dolan once ran a very successful physician practice at The Guided Hand Infirmary[10] within the Interstead Sprawl, one where his partner Horris was the head physician. The House of Sutan ruined his practice and industry[11] sometime in 835 PD.[12] Horris took the brunt of the fall from public opinion.[13]

He went from a comfortable living of helping people to a life of squalor and shame.[14] Ren Sutan took control of their practice, his clients and much of their wealth.[15]

"Steam and Conversation" (2x09)[]

Beauregard Lionett and Fjord attended a meeting of the Knights of Requital that was led by Dolan. He asked them to state their purpose, and Fjord said they were looking for some "higher thinking." When asked if the Dwendalian Empire had served them well, Beau bluffed that they were mistreated by the Empire and they were welcomed into the meeting. Dolan spoke of the House of Sutan ruining his husband's reputation, forcing them to live in squalor. The meeting continued, each in turn discussing the many social issues that the Empire had a hand in causing or making worse. At the end of the meeting, Dolan reminded everybody to keep their heads up and that this would have to change soon. The crowd was dismissed soon after but before they left Beau and Fjord asked Dolan when they would meet again, and where they could find him outside of these meetings.

"Zemnian Nights" (2x11)[]

Beau, Fjord and Caleb Widogast attended another Knights of Requital meeting, which both Dolan and Horris attended. When Caleb entered the meeting, Dolan was put off by the sudden arrival of a stranger, but reluctantly agreed to let him join. Dolan explained to the group that the Knights of Requital had been following the Mighty Nein while they were in town, and were impressed by their skills. The Knights explained they were planning to turn High Richter Dayana Prucine and Lord Diedric Sutan against each other by breaking into Lord Sultan's house and stealing personal effects to forge a letter plotting an assassination.

The Knights clarified that upon the vacation of the High Richter's position, Dolan would take her place. Beau asked Dolan why he thought he could beat the system from the inside, and Dolan said there were good people within the government, they just had to remove the corrupt ones and at least attempt to do good. They spent some time clarifying the specifics of the plan, and thanked the Nein for being willing to help out. Beau told Dolan to think carefully about the risks involved with joining the government, and he said he would take her advice into consideration. They arranged another meeting at the Song and Supper Inn.

At their next meeting, Dolan and Ulog met the rest of the Mighty Nein, and Ulog confirmed to Dolan that all of the group were friends. Dolan explained that there was a gala happening tomorrow night that they were planning to use to cover their infiltrations, if the group were still interested. The Nein brought up the matter of payment and the Knights offered a little under 700 gold, 115 of which came from Dolan and Horris. He also agreed to give the party a handful of healing potions and handed over Knights of Requital documents that Fjord had previously requested. He asked the party if they were sure they wanted to do this and after a moment to confer, they agreed. They agreed to meet the next night at the Leaky Tap

"Midnight Espionage" (2x12)[]

Fjord visited Dolan and Horris's house asking for the addresses of Lord Sultan and the High Richter, as well as handwriting samples for them both. The two gave him what information they could.

"Lost & Found" (2x13)[]

Following the heist, Beau and Fjord met Dolan and Horris at their home, and found them frantically packing and preparing to flee the city. The Nein informed them of Ulog's death, which further distressed them. Fjord told Dolan there was little chance this would come back to them, and if he wanted to help this city he should stay and see the plot through. Dolan agreed to stay but convinced Horris to go to Alfield and lay low, where he would be safe. The Mighty Nein accepted their payment and left with Horris, who hugged Dolan tightly and promised he'd be back soon.

"A Favor in Kind" (2x16)[]

Visiting Dolan's house, the Mighty Nein informed him that they were successful in their arrangements to get Horris out of the city, and that he was headed seemingly to Berleben. Additionally keeping to the promise and final wish Ulog had made, before his murder-suicide, the party handed over the documents that were found at Dayana Prucine's estate concerning the imprisonment of his wife Illiana.[16]

"Harvest Close" (2x17)[]

During the fight at the Victory Pit, Beauregard spotted Dolan sitting next to Lawmaster Orentha Stonegrasp in the stands[17]

"Fond Farewells" (2x141)[]

Dolan and Horris were present at Zeenoth and Thoreau Lionett's trial, where Beauregard learned that Dolan was now High-Richter of Zadash.[18]

Relationships[]

Horris Thrym[]

Horris is Dolan's husband.[19]

Character Information[]

Home[]

Doland and Horris lived in a modest, two-room home that was in a state of disrepair, with part of the roof sinking in. The front room was the main entrance into the home and contained bookshelves that also held some alchemical vials and glass containers, and dried roots that appeared to be medicinal in nature[20]. The back room was a bedroom and had a door that lead to an alley behind the house.[21]

Appearances and mentions[]

Quotations[]

  • "Well, the system's too big for us to deconstruct from the outside. At the very least, I could hope to improve it from the inside. I know the lawmaster is a good woman; there are good people in there. But if we root out the cancers, the tumors, that threaten to make it what it is and what it could become, that's something. We have to try." –Dolan Thrym, to the Mighty Nein[22]

Trivia[]

  • As a group of villagers from Rumblecusp left through a portal to Zadash, Veth shouted after them, "Look for Dolan!"[23]
