Dol-Makjar is a large cosmopolitan city located on Aramán,[4][5] at the eastern edge of the land of Kahad.[1]
Description[]
Often hit by rain and thunderstorms,[5][6] Dol-Makjar is a city of gray stone and towering spires. The River Vrosh runs down from the mountains of Kavros, stepwise, along the eastern edge of the city,[1] and turns into waterfalls once out of the city and into Lake Nahami.[7]
Dol-Makjar is surrounded by the nearby ancient Tintazy Wood.[8] The Dvalmar Pass crosses the Kavrosi Mountains east of the city, and holds the road leading to Obridimia and the fallen Obridimian Empire.[9] To the north lies the Kingdom of Timmony, generally reached via a well-traveled road called the King's Road (sometimes "King's Highway" or "King's Way").[10]
Caravan Hill[]
One of the lowest neighborhoods of the city. It is a trading hub for orcish goods, frequented by merchant caravans, hence its name.[11]
- Sir Ogrimok's Market,[11] or Ogrimok Marketplace, with some of the finest armorers and weapons dealers in the world, as well as a variety of other goods for sale: textiles, food, spices[12]
- Mercanaud Couturier, a tailor near the Marketplace; the Mercanaud family are correctly rumored to be allies of House Halovar who make their problems go away[13]
- The Guard Tower, a tavern known to be frequented by the Crow Keepers[11]
The Lloy family was originally settled in this area.[14]
The Embers[]
The Embers is the dwarven neighborhood of the city and it borders that of Rozigar. Dwarves carved their dwellings into the side of the Kavrosi Mountains.[15]
- The Penteveral, an academy
- Underwallen & Sisters, a wainwright workshop[16]
The Fray[]
The lowermost neighborhood of Dol-Makjar,[17] not far from The Rookery, where there are potters' galleries.[18]
- Potter's Field, a tavern[17]
- Speak No Evil, a private area that acts as a den of fiendish magic and other illegal activities[19]
Lugzash[]
The neighborhood of Lugzash is located near the headwaters of the River Vrosh on the northern part of Dol-Makjar[20] across from Mirzash.[21]
- The Archanade, a museum[20]
- Palazzo Davinos,[22] estate of House Davinos in Dol-Makjar, located near River Vrosh[23]
- Other riverside palazzos"Stone-Faced" (4x04) at 4:17:52
Marud[]
The highest neighborhood in the city.[24]
- The Grey Tower, the seat of government of the city[25]
- Falcon's Rest, a monument created to commemorate the Falconer's Rebellion and the lives lost there (with names written on its surface), as a way of the city to hide some of their shame for not helping the rebels. There's an actual falcon's nest there too.[3]
Mirzash[]
Mirzash is located in the high western ward of Dol-Makjar,[26] across from Lugzash, and towers over the lower neighborhoods of the city.[21]
- Villa Aurora, the palatial home of House Halovar[27][26]
- Lloy estate, home of the Lloy family in Dol-Makjar[21]
The Rookery[]
On the eastern edge of the city, this neighborhood is named for its many perches and aviaries providing homes for the city's magpies, as well as other birds like the off-white rock doves or the occasional bird of prey (like owls or falcons).[28] It is built of conical shingled towers and sky bridges, a quirky Bohemian quarter where writers, artists, and performers reside. Many of the rooftops hold seating facing toward a stage along the River Vrosh. Near the top of a hill is the medium-sized but many-bedroomed home of Halandil Fang.[29]
At the very base of the hills, in the outskirts, is the dithyramb of Azgra, an ancient amphitheater recently deeded to Halandil Fang.[30] He renamed the place "The Hallowed Round" and transformed it into an open-air public theater.[31]
Rozigar[]
The neighborhood of Rozigar borders that of the Embers.[15]
- The Tangled Sheet[32]
Rubble Cliff[]
- The Brethren Hall, base for the Revolutionary Guard[33][34]
The Tanners[]
A grimy neighborhood to the south of the city.[35]
- Obrimus Manor, House Tachonis's manor[36]
- Ograhmson Leather Tannery, which also holds a hidden flop house that can be accessed using the S in the name of the establishment[37]
Other points of interest[]
- The Guardian Wall: a massive stone construction at the eastern edge of the city surmounted by eighty-foot-tall statues of the heroes of the Shapers' War that lean outward, seeming to hold off the nearby Kavros Mountains; there are balconies built on the shoulders of those statues.[2]

- The Crow Keepers, the oldest thieves' guild in the city.[44]
History[]
Long before the Shapers' War, Dol-Makjar was a bastion on the border of the orcish realm standing against mountain dwarves from the east and humans from the north.[7] It is because of those conflicts and the defensive role of the city that it was named "Dol-Makjar".[45]
Centuries later, the city had become a metropolis and was, seventy years before the beginning of Campaign Four, the seat of the revolution against the gods.[46][47][7] In the years after the Falconer's Rebellion, the Chamber of the Lords-Advisory gained more and more power within the Revolutionary Council.[48] Some time around the events of Campaign Four: Overture, the Revolutionary Council, under the impulse of the Chamber of the Lords-Advisory, passed laws to restrict arcane magic[49][50] and started to break up the Revolutionary Guard.[51]
Trivia[]
- Brennan Lee Mulligan confirmed that the prefix "Dol-" in several place names in Aramán is a old orcish or Kahadi naming convention. "Makjar", in turn, has the connotation of "shield" or "wall", since that region had acted as a barrier during a conflict against dwarves.[52]
- It's not uncommon for couples in Dol-Makjar to start families without ever marrying.[53]
- Thjazi Fang's execution was the first in the history of the city of Dol-Makjar carried out exclusively under the authority of the Chamber of Lords-Advisory of the Sundered Houses.[43]
- There is a custom of raising birds for messenger purposes in Dol-Makjar.[54]
- In terms of diversity and activity, Dol-Makjar seems to be inspired by New York City.[5]
