Deirta Thelyss is an Umavi,[2] a "perfect soul" revered in the Kryn Dynasty, and the leader of Den Thelyss of Rosohna, one of the Dynasty's three ruling Dens.[3] Under her guidance, Den Thelyss wishes to see the Dynasty established within the world and respected by others.[4] Deirta is the mother of Essek Thelyss[2] and Verin Thelyss.[5] Matthew Mercer described her as "deeply steeped" in Dynasty culture.[6]

Appearances and mentions[]

Trivia[]

  • In "Bathhouses and Bastions" (2x90), the Mighty Nein realized that they never asked Essek about his personal life. They specifically pointed out they did not know his mother's name, an out-of-character reference to when Scanlan Shorthalt asked his friends in "A Bard's Lament" (1x85) for his mother's name, knowing that they did not know.[7] Essek did not answer the question over Sending, but he answered in the subsequent episode when it was posed to him again in person.[2]
  • As both Essek and Verin are drow, Deirta was also drow when they were born. Essek remarks that he has never raised a parent, and implies Deirta is still living.[8]
  • In 843 PD, when Essek was pretending to be Archivist Seth Domade, he had also an equivalent of Deirta in his backstory: Thela Domade, a tavern wench who was the first in her family to go through formal schooling.[9]
